많은 학문적인 경전 연구들은 경전의 내용과 의미를 중심으로 하는 의미론적 차원에만 초점을 맞추어온 반면, 경전 자체의 성스러운 지위를 강조하는 성상적 차원이나 의례를 통해 신자에게 의미 있는 결과를 유발하는 경전의 수행적 차원은 간과해왔다. 그러나 경전을 읽고 쓸 능력이 없는 신자들이 다수였던 근대이전 종교들의 사례에서 볼 수 있듯이, 정작 많은 종교인들의 삶에 경전의 내용은 그다지 중요하지 않은 경우가 많다. 따라서 경전 본문에만 집중하는 연구만 수행한다면, 윌프레드 캔트웰 스미스가 지적한 대로 경전이 종교인들에게 어떤 의미가 있고 어떤 역할을 하는지를 보지 못하게 된다. 이 논문은 종교인들이 경전을 이해하고 수용하는 방식, 나아가 경전을 이용하는 방식들을 밝힘으로써 경전의 성상적 차원과 수행적 차원을 설명한다. 많은 불교인들은 읽거나 쓰지 않고도 단지 불경을 소유하는 것만으로 경전의 성스러운 지위를 인식했으며, 한국 개신교 신자들은 성경을 읽는 의례를 통해 읽은 내용과 관련 없는 종교적인 체험을 했다. 경전의 성상적 차원과 수행적 차원은 종교인들이 경전을 인식하고 수용하는 다양한 방식들을 밝힘으로써 분명히 드러난다.

Most scholarly works on religious scriptures have paid attention to their semantic dimension, overlooking the iconic dimension which stands for the sacred status of the physical text and the performative dimension which is ritualized by performing the text. However, most of adherents of pre-modern religions could not read or write scriptures, for they did not mind the text’s contents which play a critical role in the lives of many religious people. Rather than focusing on the semantic meaning of the text, this article thus examines the iconic and performative dimensions of scriptures by articulating how religious people recognize, accept, and appropriate scriptures. Innumerable lay Buddhists have recognized the sacred status of Buddhist sutras by possessing scriptures without reading or writing them. Bible reading rituals of Korean Protestantism have stimulated religious experiences not directly linked to the meaning of what is read.
