본 연구에서는 화훼장식의 가치를 제고하기 위하여 문헌에 나타난 예술의 정의, 특성, 목적, 요건, 범주, 종류를 통해 화훼장식이 예술의 한 분야에 속할 수 있음을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 의미와 정서 전달, 인식의 다양성, 표현의 다양성, 제작과 관리의 기술, 그리고 미와 선의 추구가 주요 내용에 속하였다. 이와 같은 예술의 보편적 요건들 속에서 화훼장식의 특성을 찾을 수 있었다. 또한 이러한 점들은 화훼장식의 정의 속에도 이미 내포되어 있었다. 그러므로 본 연구를 통해서 화훼장식이 예술의 범주에 속할 수 있다는 근거를 찾을 수 있었다.

This study was performed for the enhancement of value as one category of art in floral art and design by the investigation based on general definitions, traits, purposes, requisites, category, and kinds of art in literature. Outlined result was conveyance of meaning and emotion, diversification in recognition and expression, skills for installation and handling, and pursuit of virtue and beauty. Universal traits of art were considered to include those of floral art and design. It was correspond with the existing definitions of floral art and design. In conclusion it shows one ground that floral art and design could be included into one category of art.
