이 연구의 목적은 초등학교 교사들을 대상으로 교사가 지각하는 학교장의 다문화 교육 인식에 대해 알아보고 이러한 학교장의 다문화 교육 인식이 교사의 다문화 교육 교수효능감에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 알아보는데 있다. 연구대상은 초등학교에 근무하고 있는 교사 500명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다.
연구결과에 의하면 교사가 지각한 학교장의 다문화 교육 중요도와 수행도 인식은 교사의 다문화 교육 교수효능감의 하위 영역인 일반생활, 수업기술, 인간관계 모두에 유의한 영향을 미친다. 따라서 학교장은 다문화 교육의 발전에 대한 관심, 의사결정을 위해 교사를 격려, 교사들의 지적 성장에 대한 도움, 교사들을 향한 신뢰와 존경의 태도, 다문화 교수에 관한 피드백, 다문화 환경개선 등에 대한 다양한 아이디어 도출 등의 노력이 요구된다고 할 수 있다.
이 연구는 학교 경영자인 교장은 학교 공동체의 구성원이 다문화 교육의 발전을 위해 서로 협력할 수 있는 동기를 부여하고 교사의 다문화 교육 교수효능감을 높이기 위한 방안을 강구해야 한다는 점을 시사하고 있다.
