최근에 발생하는 강력범죄는 형사정책에 대한 국민들의 불안을 증대시킬 뿐만 아니라 형사체제 전반에 대한 비판에 있어서 교정도 예외가 될 수 없는 실정이다. 이런 사회분위기는 교정에 있어 새로운 기회로 작용할 수 도 있다. 교정정책이 국민들의 적극적인 지원속에서 역할을 다하기 위해서는 도주, 자살과 같은 교정사고를 예방하여 국민들로부터 신뢰를 받는 교정의 모습을 보여주어야 할 것이다. 지금까지 자살과 관련하여 수용자를 대상으로 한 연구는 법적, 공간적 제약으로 많은 연구가 이뤄지지 않았다. 이런 이유로 수용자의 자살과 관련된 연구는 일반적으로는 법무연수원에서 발간하는 범죄백서나 법무부 교정본부에서 발표하는 통계자료를 기반으로 하여 단순하게 분석하여 대략적인 윤곽을 추정하거나, 일반적인 사회학․심리학적 이론을 토대로 한 연구가 주류를 이루고 있었다. 좀 더 세부적인 자료수집에 한계가 있기 때문에 구체적인 부분까지 연구를 수행하기에는 제한적일 수 밖에 없었다. 그러한 이유로 자살의 일반적인 자살의 원인을 우울증, 충동 등 개인의 심리적 문제를 중심으로 설명하고자 한 주장이 많았으며, 자살예방을 위한 대책도 상담 및 치료 등에 초점이 많이 맞춰진 경향이 있었다. 이론적인 연구에서 벗어나서 현장의 실무적인 입장에서의 분석을 통해 수용자의 자살사고에 대한 사전예방대책을 수립하는 기초가 되기를 바라는 마음으로 2006년부터 2010년까지 최근 5년간 전국 교정시설에서 발생한 자살관련 사고를 1차적으로 분석하고, 2010년 한 해 동안 자살을 시도하거나 준비 중에 적발되어 결과에 이르지 못한 사례를 분석하여 그 실체에 대하여 알아보고자 하였다. 특히 여러 차례 자살을 시도한 경력이 있는 자에 대하여는 직접 면담을 실시하여 얻은 자료를 참고하였다.

Recently, citizens have plenty of reasons for complaint about criminal policy due to the gradual increase of felonies such as rape, burglary, and murder. In addition, we cannot avoid our citizen's interest in the correctional field which is necessarily connected with criminal policy. All of our staff members have a duty to prevent inmate's escape, suicide etc. from taking place in order to keep credibility with our citizens. That is the best way to fulfill our duties as correctional officers. We cannot deny the fact that there hasn’t been enough research into the reasons for and backgrounds to suicides thus far, because of the restrictions on time, space, human resources, and related information. For that reason, most of this data is an overview or rough analysis based on a white paper issued by the Justice training academy, as well as criminal statistics issued by correctional headquarters. It also references general sociology or psychology theory and research. The mainstream of study on the causes of suicide focuses on psychological and individual problems such as depression, impulse control, and thus suicide prevention concentrates on counseling or treatment. To overcome this flaw, our justice training academy attempted to take a more practical approach to the issues rather than theoretical ones, in order to establish better precautions against suicide. This line of research has been pursued from 2006 to 2010. In the study we made an effort to identify what are the concrete symptoms for suicide and broadly study past suicide cases. In addition, we also tried to find out the practical reasons for the failure of attempted suicide prevention in 2010. This research refers to an inmate, who had the experience of an attempted suicide.
