본 논문에서는 영국문학의 영향을 중심으로 후스의 ‘국어문학관(國語文學觀)’을 논 의대상으로 삼아 크게 두 가지 측면에서 논의를 진행했다. 첫째, 후스와 영국문학 간 의 상관성인데, 이는 크게 임역소설(林譯小說)과 미국유학으로 나눌 수 있다. 후스는 임역소설을 통해 서양 문학, 그중에서도 영국문학의 정수를 맛볼 수 있었고, 영국문 학에 대한 후스의 관심은 미국 유학을 계기로 더욱 심화되었다. 둘째, 미국 유학 시 절부터 문학 개량의 필요성을 인지했던 후스가 언어 형식의 개혁을 주장한 궁극적 목표는 자국의 국어문학 확립을 위해서였는데, 후스는 중세 유럽 각국에서 일어난 국어운동의 양상 중에서도 영국의 사례에 주목했다. 특히 중세 영어의 역사적 배경 은 언어개혁을 통해 자국의 국어문학을 확립하고자 했던 후스의 주장을 뒷받침하는 중요한 논거로 작용했다. 후스가 언어 문자의 문제에 착안하여 문학 개량의 필요성을 인지하고, 더 나아가 이를 문학의 문제까지 범주를 확대한 것은 유럽 문예운동의 전개와 전반적인 흐름을 대하는 후스의 문제의식에서 비롯되고 있다. 그중에서도 영 국문학은 비단 후스의 문학개량 사상뿐만 아니라, 자국의 국어문학 확립에 있어 더 할 나위 없이 중요한 참조 기준을 제공했다는 측면에서 그 의의를 엿볼 수 있겠다.

This paper discusses the Hu Shih’s the concept of literature in National Language focusing on the influence of English literature in two main aspects. First, Hu was able to taste the essence of Western literature, especially English literature through Lin’s Translation Novels, and Hu’s interest in English literature deepened after studying in the United States. In short, Western literature, especially English literature, not only broadened Hu’s perspective on Western art and culture, but also suggested a certain direction in establishing the Literature in National Language after return to China. Second, Hu paid attention to the case of Britain among aspects of the National Language movement in medieval Europe. This historical background of medieval English served as an important argument to support Hu's argument to establish Chinese literature through language reform. Hu needs to improve Chinese literature by focusing on the problem of language letters and further expanding the scope to the problem of literature stems from Hu’s awareness of the development and overall flow of the European literary movement. I argued that the significance of English literature in terms of providing a more important reference standard for establishing Literature in National Language literature in China.
