The purpose of this research is to investigate into similarities and difference of Pildam (conversation by writing) and Changhwa (Poem exchange). Pildam and Changhwa are similar to each other in terms of “conversations with pen.” Both of them were literature activities within the boundary of East Asia’s culture sharing Chinese characters. They represented civilized culture and a tie among the countries using same Chinese characters in the past, and had been used as means of cultural exchange. Pildam and Changhwa, however, are different from each other in terms of their usage. Most of all, Pildam was widely used for investigation of other people and message delivery. The most important mission given to envoy was exploring other countries, and Pildam played an important role in exchanging information. Pildam, however, was not supposed to include the issues related to official works of the government, so it was mainly about private issues; therefore, it was useful to exchange the knowledge about new civilization or techniques. Pildam was broadly used between the people from different countries in diplomacy and exchange, and was not limited to a few people. It was usually conducted between the envoy of Chosun and Japanese public officials or writers, but it was also the only means through which the companies of the envoy could freely exchange their ideas with foreigners. Pildam should have been improvised because it was another means of conversation, so it consisted of only the gist of the conversation unlike normal conversations. Moreover, it was only possible between the people living in the same era with a time limit. Changhwa, meanwhile, was used to enhance the country’s image based on artistic competence in literature and Chosun usually used Changhwa to brag cultural dominance over Japan. Therefore, although the primary goal of Changhwa was cultural exchange, it necessarily involved implicit rivalry. Changhwa was one of the ways to create literary works, so unnecessary small talks and the stories about fresh wind and a bright moon, one of the common issues in Chosun era, was excluded. Moreover, it was widely played between the people from the same country, and was not limited to contemporary writers. The people from the same country usually exchanged their works in the meetings held in Nujung(Ancient building), and it sometimes took one or several days to reply to others’ poem. During the trip of Japanese envoy, however, many Japanese writers or travelers asked for Korean poems, so the writers were only limited to educated literary men of Chosun. In addition, Changhwa was an activity of writing poem as a literary work, so the writers were supposed to abide by certain rules like using rhymes or homonyms.
