지속적인 분화의 경향은 당대 사회를 보다 더 복잡한 것으로 구성해내고 있다. 근대 담론의 주제였던 인간 개인의 해방은 얼핏 이루어진 듯 하고, 사람들 간의 소통성 또한 정보통신기술의 발달로 증대됐다. 하지만 여전히 요원한 사회통합은 근대 이후 세계에 대한 탐구의 적시성을 담지한다. 여기서는 시대의 변화에 따른 사회적 관계의 변화를 논한 연구들의 학문적 감수성을 중심으로 해방된 개인들 간의 오히려 증대된 낯설어짐을 탐구한다. 서로로부터 낯설어진 개인들 간에는 도덕적 동의가 존재하기 힘들고, 이제는 옳고 그름의 문제마저도 상상되어야 한다. 오늘날의 개인은 오롯이 혼자 살아갈 수 없지만 어떻게든 살아내야 하는 상황에 처해있다.

Continuing process of differentiation is making the world ever more complex. Liberating individuals, which has been the main subject of the modern times, seems to have accomplished its initial goal as the communication among the liberated enhanced. However, the fact that social integration is still out of reach calls for researches on the post-modern world. The irony of individuals being more alienated than ever despite being liberated and connected is assessed by reviewing works on the changed nature of the world we live in. Moral consent among individuals is highly unlikely to happen when they are so alienated from each other. Now the matter of right or wrong needs to be imagined and discussed actively. Individuals, however impossible it is for them to live alone, are being forced to endure the life of being highly alienated from each other.
