2005년 10월 17일 중국현대문학 최후의 거장 바진이 사망하였다. 중국의 대중매체들은 그의 죽음을 두 고 “중국의 한 시대 문학의 역사가 진정으로 마쳤음을 상징한다”라고 보도하였다. 하지만 ≪수상록≫과 바진의 사망에 따라 촉발된 바진에 대한 연구 열풍은 곧 식어갔고, 중국현대문학 최후의 거장 바진에 대 한 기억들도 세인들의 뇌리에서 서서히 잊혀져갔다. 세인들의 바진에 대한 기억은 언론매체들의 상투적 평가, 예컨대 ‘기치’, ‘한 시대의 모범’, ‘하나의 금자탑’ 등으로 고착화되어 버렸다. 그런데 문제는 바진 에 대한 찬양 일변도의 행태가 과연 그에 대한 올바른 평가를 내리는 데 도움이 되냐는 것이다. 어떠한 이의도 제기하지 않고 일관되게 칭송만 하는 것은 바진을 오히려 박제화시키는 결과를 낳고 있다. 즉, 바진은 하나의 단순한 문화 기호로 소비되고 있는 것이다. 그런 의미에서 바진 사후 10여년이 흐른 지금 바진에 대한 진중한 고찰과 비판적 성찰이 필요할 것으로 보인다.

Ba Jin, the last master of Chinese modern literature, passed away on October 17th, 2005. The mass media said the death of Ba Jin signified the end of this era. They argued that the literature in this period had now become history. His death and his works Capriccio of My Past drew greater attention from people than ever toward him, however this soon started to fade away and people started to forget Ba Jin, the last master of Modern Literature in China. Nowadays, in the hearts of most people, Ba Jin is remembered more as a one-sentence comment, a banner, a model or, a permanent milestone, etc. There has been almost no objection to the media doing nothing but praising Ba Jin. They were doing this to the point where it seemed they were overdoing it. However, Ba Jin has been simplified and turned into a cultural code that can spread among people easily. Breaking away from the meaningfulness of Ba Jin’s existence has inevitably resulted in reduction and filtration in the richness that Ba Jin accomplished. When cultural icons die, everything about them quite naturally draws people’s attention: their careers, their contributions while alive, influence, popularity, political status, etc. But the decisive factor seems to lie in the question, whether a person when dead still has meaning to the people who are still alive and their society. In the later years of his writing career, Ba Jin merely put forward questions with no any satisfactory answers. 10 years has passed since Ba Jin’s demise and not many people still remember him. This makes many wonder if it is still meaningful to continue our inquiry to find answers to those questions that he had left unanswered.
