스티픈 밀러의 『일요일의 특이한 이력』은 대서양 양안의 영어 사용 저술가 들의 일요일에 관한 다양한 생각을 살피는 책이다. 그들 중에는 목사, 화가, 소 설가, 시인, 철학자, 비평가 등이 포함된다. 밀러는 기독교인들을 대강 세 그룹 즉 준수자들, 실천하지 않는 자들, 타락한 자들로 나누었다. 준수자들에게 일요 일은 성일이며, 또 다른 이들에게 일요일은 성일이자 휴일이다. 일요일을 성일 로 아는 사람들은 보통 엄격한 일요일 준수로 몰아가는 안식일 준수자라 불린 다. 안식일 준수 가정에서 자란 작가들은 대개 우울한 일요일을 지냈으며 그들 은 어린 시절의 경험에 대하여 부정적으로 반응하였다. 일요일에 관한 논쟁들은 종교개혁 이후 역사를 통하여 성과 속 두 축 사이에서 우왕좌왕하는 흐름을 이 루어 온 것으로 보인다. 현재 철저한 안식일 준수 강조의 힘이 약하지만, 곧 강 한 힘으로 돌아올 수 있을 것이다. 밀러의 책은 많은 자료를 섭렵하였다. 매우 흥미롭고 지식이 풍부한 책이지만 가끔 산만한 것이 흠이다.

Stephen Miller’s The Peculiar Life of Sundays traces diverse sentiments toward Sunday among writers on both sides of the Atlantic. Included among the writers are clergy, a painter, novelists, poets, philosophers, and critics. Miller fathoms the processes of each writer, including how the author’s position on Sunday was formed. For Miller, Christians can be roughly divided into three groups: the observant, the not-practicing, and the lapsed. For the observant Christians, Sundays are regarded as holy days. For some, Sundays are both holy days and holidays. Those who regard Sunday as a holy day are called Sabbatarians, who normally push for strict Sunday observance. Among the writers introduced, those who grew up in Sabbatarian families usually remembered Sundays as gloomy and reacted negatively to their childhood experience. The post-Reformation debates on Sunday can be likened to a winding stream, drifting back and forth between the sacred and the secular.
