This paper aims to investigate the concept of ecological community in Louisa May Alcott’s “Hospital Sketches.” This research defines the traits of ecological self in three ways. The first puts emphasis on human relationships. The second stresses the change of characters’ attitudes in response to the community. The third focuses on the self responding to other people’s needs. Emmanuel Levinas insists self-identity as a process of responding to society’s demand and conforming with another individual’s calling. In “Hospital Sketches,” a character named ‘Tribulation Periwinkle’ initially attempts to be men-like by participating in Civil War as a nurse. However, as she nurses injured soldiers during the war, she concentrates on people who suffer with agonizing pain, and during this process, her ideas and actions change and try to do her best to be responsible for her patients. The patients in this story concentrate on others’ agony instead of their own one and adapt in response to community’s demand to make ecological community.
