Most “Seowon (書院),” or lecture halls, including Namgyeseowon (灆溪書院) directly played an educational role being a high-level educational institution, a publishing house or a library in the region in addition to the operational or ruling body of Confucian scholars in the countryside that caused countless problems, and by forming connections with the central government Seowon also functioned as a local base for activities of academic and political sects. In the aspect of the Seowon being the local base of academic and political sects in particular, at the beginning of its foundation and process, Namgyeseowon was under the influence of the School of Nammyeong (南冥學派) or the political sector Bugin Power (北人政 權); however, after the Injo Restoration (仁祖反正) in 1623, it became the Namin faction (南人)-affiliated Seowon; and after the Power Shift in the Year Gapsul (甲戌換局) in 1694 and the Musin Revolt (戊申亂) in 1728, its nature went back to the Noron faction (老 論)-affiliated Seowon. From this, how Namgyeseowon changed its identity and why it had to change can be known that they are important in understanding Namgyeseowon. With that said, this study examines the changes of the nature of Namgyeseowon and its process, and has as an objective to confirm how the status of the Confucian scholar Jeong Yeo-chang (鄭汝昌, 1450∼1504), who was the center of Namgyeseowon, settled in such changes of Seowon. The discussion starts with the nature of Namgyeseowon at the time of its foundation as it centered on figures that built the place, followed by close investigations on the changes of its nature, from the Namin faction- to the Noron faction-affiliated, as it was transmitted to later generations. As a conclusion, this study examines the status of Jeong Yeo-chang in comparison with the court official and Neo-Confucian scholar Kim Goeing-pil (金宏弼, 1454~1504). Kim Geoing-pil was able to maintain a considerably high status in his hometown of Hyeonpung and in the mid-Nakdong River area such as Seongju and Hapcheon, and was honored by his maternal great-grandson Jeong Gu (鄭逑, 1543~1620), who directly inherited philosophies of Chinese scholars Cheng Yi (程頤) and Zhu Xi (朱熹) at Cheongokseowon and Dodongseowon. On the contrary, Jeong Yeo-chang was without visible successors and lost political and academic foundations after the fall of the School of Nammyeong, so his status could not be improved. It is estimated that the fall of the School of Nammyeong influenced not only the transmission of the Nammyeong Studies (南冥學) but also the changes of the nature of Namgyeseowon and the status of Jeong Yeo-chang.
