이 글은 하퍼 리의 앵무새 죽이기를 캘빈주의가 주장하는 이상적인 기독 교 공동체에 의거하여 분석하고자 하였다. 캘빈주의는 중세 기독교와는 달리 현 실에 적극적인 관심을 가지고 신의 뜻에 맞게 사회를 전반적으로 바꾸고자 노 력하였다. 이들은 성경을 통해 신과 직접적으로 교류할 것을 강조하면서, 동시 에 신의 형상으로 창조된 이웃에 대한 사랑이 함께 할 때 신의 사랑이 현실에서 완성될 수 있다고 보았다. 즉 기독교인의 임무는 신에 대한 정확한 지식을 바탕 으로 신과의 직접적 교류에 힘쓰며 동시에 공동체를 위해 헌신하는 것이었다. 그러나 작품 속에 드러나는 메이콤의 주류 기독교 공동체는 말로는 이웃사랑을 외치지만 가난한 흑인 기독교도들을 위한 형제로서의 의무를 외면한다. 기독교 는 백인 선교회 회원들의 욕망과 허영을 만족시키는데 봉사한다. 그러나 애티커 스 핀치 변호사는 억울하게 누명을 쓴 흑인 탐 로빈슨을 변호하는 일이 신과의 관계, 그리고 이웃과의 관계에서 진정한 평화를 누리는 길임을 인식하고 그의 무죄를 증명하기 위해 최선을 다한다. 애티커스 핀치의 삶을 통해 캘빈주의가 주장한 기독교 공동체 의식을 확인할 수 있다.

This paper aims to examine the Christian’s way of life in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird in light of the Calvinistic point of view. Calvinism was different from Medieval Christianity where reformed Christians strived to build a heavenly kingdom in the human society without avoiding reality. They insisted that the love of God fosters the love of neighborhood created in God’s image. For men are born in God’s image, Christians should love and serve for one another. However, in To Kill a Mockingbird, the Christian community in Maycomb shows relentless prejudice against black people. Their understanding of Jesus’ words isn’t fulfilled in their actual life, for Jesus’ teaching made them give up their vested rights. In contrast, Atticus Finch tries to reach the state of ‘Shalom’ by defending Tom Robinson, the falsely accused black man. His attitude verifies that the love of God can be accomplished by serving the poor and distressed neighbors.
