이 논문은 『숙향전』에 담긴 천인관계가 하늘의 절대적 주권과 인간의 적극 적인 역할의 상호주체적 작용을 통해 성립된다는 것을 보인다. 이 소설의 주인 공들은 하늘이 미리 정해놓은 삶을 살지만 이에 반응하는 과정을 통해 천명의 완수에 주체로 참여한다. 이는 하늘이 인간의 삶에 주도권을 행사한다고 인정하 면서도 인간 역시 숙명에 따라 수동적으로 살아가는 존재로 생각하지 않았던 당대의 사고를 반영한다. 소설 속에서 하늘과 인간의 관계는 김전이 주체로서 결정하고 행동한 일의 결과에 의해 처음으로 시작된다. 주인공 숙향과 이선은 종종 하늘의 뜻에 반하더라도 자신의 의지에 따라 삶의 방향에 관한 결정을 내 리는 주체로 묘사된다. 하늘은 무조건적으로 인간의 일에 개입하는 것이 아니라 주인공들의 인품, 덕성, 정성, 의지를 계속 확인하고 시험한 후에야 인간사에 개 입함으로써 인간의 역할을 인정한다. 주인공들이 천상으로 들어가는 결말 부분 의 이야기는 하늘의 주도가 인간의 반응과 만나서 천정(天定)이 구원론적으로 완성되는 모습을 보여준다. 천상계와 인간계라는 명확히 구별된 영역의 주체들 이 함께 천명을 실현한 결과 이 구별이 없어지고, 인간이 천상이라는 성스러움 으로 합일되는 것이다.

This article shows that the relationship between Heaven and humans in the Korean classical novel Sukhyangjeon is established through the intersubjective operations of Heaven’s sovereign power and human participation. The main characters actively participate as subjects in the fulfillment of Heaven’s mandate, even as they live their lives as foreordained by Heaven. This reflects the thought, prevalent in the late Joseon period, that, though Heaven takes the initiative in human lives, humans do not just passively give in to fate as predetermined by Heaven. The Heaven-human relationship in the novel begins not with a decree from Heaven but with Kim Jeon who actively makes his own decision. Similarly, Sukhyang and Lee Seon are often depicted as subjects who decide on the courses of their lives even against Heaven’s will. Heaven and his subordinate deities do not intervene in human affairs unconditionally, but rather cede a certain agency to humans by testing them and verifying their character and virtues.
