오늘날 한국교회는 ‘선교적 교회’라는 용어에 대한 분명한 정의나 이해함 없이 피상적 개념으로 사용하고 있다. ‘선교적 교회’를 주창한 대럴 구더(Darrell L. Guder) 등의 학자들은 이 용어 사용에 대해 매우 조심스럽게 접근한다. 그래서 그들은 이 용어를 적용함에 있어서 지역을 한정하고 있다. 실제로 ‘선교적 교회’를 논하는 학자들 자신들도 ‘선교적 교회’ 개념이 크리스텐덤(Christendom) 밖의 세상에서 사용 되는 것에 대해서 놀라기도 한다. 필자는 본 논문에서 ‘선교적 교회’ 개념을 그저 학습하고 좇아가기 보다는 비판적 상황화 과정을 거쳐서 “선교적 교회” 개념이 한국 교회에서 정착되어야 한다고 본다. 그리고 서구교회가 크리스텐덤에서 비크리스텐덤으로 변화되어 가는 과정 속에서 직면하고 있는 그들의 과제를 해결하기 위해서는 서구 교회가 비크리스텐덤의 상황 속에서 교회가 성장해 왔던 세계 교회들, 특별히 비서구지역의 교회들로부터 배울 수 있는 자세를 가져야 한다. 그리고 비판적 상황화의 관점 속에서 선교적 교회를 한국 교회에 적용하고 이해하기 위해서 도출되어야 하는 결론은 다음과 같다. 교회는 ‘선교적 교회’가 되어야 하는 것이 아니라, 교회의 본질에 충실하면 ‘선교적 교회’가 된다는 것이다. 즉, 본질로 돌아가서 교회가 교회다운 교회, 즉 교회론 그 자체, 본질에 충실한 하나님의 교회가 될 때 교회의 선교적 기능은 이루어지게 되는 것이다.

These days, churches in Korea use the phrase “missional church” without a clear definition or understanding, but rather, in an abstract manner. Darrell L. Guder, a scholar who advocated the phrase “missional church,” and other scholars approach this phrase very deliberately. Consequently, they have limited the areas that can be referred to by this terminology. In this paper, the author argues that the term “missional church” should be established in the churches in Korea through critical contextualization rather than simply studying and following it. Moreover, in order to apply and comprehend the concept of missional church from a critical contextualizational approach to the churches in Korea, it is possible to draw the following conclusion: instead of first becoming a missional church, a church becomes missional when it focuses on its essence and core values.
