This essay aims to establish a previously unexplored link from the nonsense works of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll to Yeats’s poetical works. Via the theme of synthesis, I argue that the image of the homo-avian is very close to the mechanical bird state that Yeats pursues in “Sailing to Byzantium.” The homo-avian appears to exemplify the ultimate synthesis that all three authors in question aspire to attend in one form or another. Furthermore, as Victorian nonsense is generally a synthetic construct of both word and image, there is a strong correlation between the vehicle and the content in discussion.
