최근 초등 교과서 漢字倂記 추진을 둘러싸고 찬반 논쟁이 격화되었다. 유감스럽게도 어느 쪽의 주장에서도 과학적 근거를 찾기 어려웠다. 본 연구는 행동실험과 사건관련전위(ERP) 기법을 이용하 여 漢字倂記가 독서에 미치는 영향을 규명하고자 하였다. 구체적으로 漢字倂記가 同音漢字語의 의 미적 모호성을 해소하는지 확인하기 위해 ERP의 N400 성분에 초점을 맞추었다. N400 성분은 의미 이해의 지표로 알려져 있으며 의미적 모호성 또는 의미적 모순이 있는 경우 진폭이 증가한다. 실험 결과, 漢字倂記 조건에서 문장이해의 정확률이 높았으며, 의미적 모호성의 지표인 N400 성분이 유 의하게 감소하였다. 漢字倂記의 긍정적 효과는 同音漢字語가 열세의미로 사용되는 환경에서 더 크 게 관찰되었다. 실험 결과를 바탕으로 漢字倂記의 문제에 과학적 방법을 사용하여 접근할 것을 제안 하였다.

To teach and use Hanja characters has long been a critical issue in the Korean society. The Korean Ministry of Educational recently announced the project of Hanja juxtaposition in elementary school textbooks, resulting in an acute confrontation between rival teachers and activists. The problem is that both sides involved lack scientific support. The present study, using scientific methods, tackled the issue of Hanja juxtaposition, and aimed to show one way of resolving language conflicts in Korea. The study tried to determine the extent to which language comprehension is affected by Hanja juxtaposition. ERPs, the electric potentials produced on scalp during the processing of words and sentences, were collected to determine whether Hanja juxtaposition facilitates the resolution of lexical ambiguity. The results showed that Hanja juxtaposed to a homophone enhanced sentential comprehension, reducing the amplitude of the N400 component. The effect was stronger when a homophone appeared as a less frequent meaning. The advantages and disadvantages of Hanja juxtaposition were discussed based upon the experimental results.
