이 글은 한국 장로교 여성 가운데 최초로 목사안수를 받은 최덕지 (1901-1956)가 일제의 신사참배 강요에 굴복하여 무너진 한국교회를 회복 하기 위해 해방 직후에 전개한 교회재건 운동을 살펴보고, 그의 교회론에 대한 신학적 해석을 시도한다. 그의 교회론에 대한 교회사가들의 평가는 지금까지 대체로 매우 부정적 이었다. 대부분의 학자들은 그의 교회론을 ‘극단적 분리주의’ 혹은 ‘극단적 분파주의’ 혹은 ‘도나투스주의’라고 평가한다. 하지만 이들의 평가는 최덕 지의 재건운동에 대한 자세한 분석과 교회론에 대한 깊은 신학적 해석에 기초한 것이 아니다. 본고는 이런 연구의 공백을 메꾸기 위한 하나의 시도 이다. 최덕지의 교회론을 정확하게 평가하기 위해 그의 교회재건 운동을 해방 직후의 구체적인 역사적 상황에 위치시키고 ‘도나투스파 교회론’을 해석학 적 도구로 사용하여 그의 설교를 분석했다. 이러한 연구를 통해 최덕지의 교회론을 ‘극단적 분리주의, 혹은 분파주의’ 혹은 ‘도나투스주의’라고 단순하게 말하기는 어렵다는 결론에 도달했다. 하지만 동시에 그의 재건운동과 재건교회 설립은 그가 의도하지 않았던 교회의 분열을 낳았고, 그의 교회 론에 도나투스주의와 매우 유사한 성격-장점과 한계 두 측면 모두에 있어 서-이 많은 것도 부인할 수 없음을 확인했다. 전체적으로 보자면 최덕지의 교회재건 운동은 교회의 거룩성 회복을 위 해서는 큰 공헌을 하였으나, 교회의 일치 유지를 위한 노력은 부족했다고 평가할 수 있다. 그러나 당시 역사적 상황에서 교회의 거룩성 회복이야말 로 보다 중요한 시대적 과제였던 점을 감안하면, 그의 공헌이 한계보다 훨 씬 높이 평가되어야 한다. 최덕지의 교회론이 지금 주님의 몸을 수없이 많은 조각으로 찢어놓고 만신창이로 만든 한국교회에 주는 교훈은 실로 무겁다. 참된 교회의 회복 을 위해서는 ‘일치를 해치지 않는 거룩성’과 ‘거룩성을 해치지 않는 일치’ 를 동시에 추구해야 한다는 것이다. 이 연구가 최덕지의 교회재건 운동에 대한 재평가를 위해 그리고 오늘 한국교회의 분열된 현실의 뿌리 이해와 일치의 길 모색 그리고 더 나아가 통일 이후 북한교회가 직면하게 될 해방직후와 유사한 배교자 치리 문제를 예견하고 미리 준비하는 데 기여할 수 있기를 희망한다.

This article looks into the Church Reconstruction Movement during the post-liberation period that was lead by Rev. Deokji Choi (1901-1956), the first woman ordained by the Presbyterian Church of Korea to recover the Church, which had collapsed by the shrine worship forced by the Japanese Empire. It endeavors to propose a theological interpretation of her ecclesiology. Our first question is, “Is Choi’s ecclesiology in the Movement ‘extreme secessionism’, ‘extreme sectarianism’ or ‘Donatism’, as church historians generally define it? To answer this question, we situate Choi’s Reconstruction Movement in the historical context of the post-liberation period, and analyze her sermons using ‘Donatist ecclesiology’ as an hermeneutical tool. As a result, we came to the conclusion that it is hard to consider her ecclesiology simply as ‘extreme secessionism’, ‘extreme sectarianism’ or ‘Donatism’. At the same time, however, it cannot be denied that her Reconstruction Movement and building of Reconstruction Church engendered the division of the Church, which she had never intended, and that her ecclesiology shares a lot with that of Donatists. Overall, we can state that Choi’s Reconstruction Movement contributed much to the restoration of the sanctity of the Church, but lacked the effort to maintain its unity. The limitations of Choi’s ecclesiology offer significant lessons to the Korean Church, which has severely torn apart the Body of Our Lord: The road to true restoration of church requires sanctity that does not hamper unity as well as unity that does not hamper sanctity. This research contributes to reevaluating Deokji Choi’s Church Reconstruction Movement, understanding the roots of the division of the Korean Church, and seeking out the way to unity. Furthermore, it will help foresee and prepare for the problem of the treatment of apostates that the North Korean Churches will have to face in the coming post-reunification period.
