불교 창시자 싯다르타 이래 수많은 승려가 오도송을 남겼다. 오도송이란 깨 달음을 이루게 된 기연(機緣)과 깨달음의 내용을 선시로 쓴 것이다. 본고에서는 깨달음의 내용이 무엇인지, 즉 오도송을 통해 무엇을 전하고 싶었는지를 살펴보 았다. 싯다르타의 오도송은 불교의 창시를 선포한다는 뜻이다. 깨달음으로써 내 가 이전과 어떻게 달라졌고, 앞으로 이전과 어떻게 달리 살아가겠다는 결심을 천명하고 있다. 중국 혜능ㆍ조주ㆍ동산의 오도송은 중국 불교(대승불교)의 특 징을 그대로 보여준다. 인도에서 중국으로 넘어온 불교는 붓다에게만 한정하던 보살의 개념을 넓혀 모든 중생이 부처가 될 수 있다는 가능성을 인정함으로써 중생을 보살로 보았다. 원효ㆍ혜근ㆍ휴정의 오도송을 보면 진리를 깨달았다고 자랑하거나 내 깨달음의 내용이 대단한 것이라고 득의양양해하지 않았음을 알 수 있다. 또한 널리 알리겠다는 포교의식이 없었다는 것을 알 수 있다. 학눌ㆍ 경봉ㆍ성철의 오도송을 보면 우연이건 필연이건 깨달음의 과정이 쉽지 않았다 는 것을 알 수 있다. 수행과 깨달음을 통해 스스로 만족하는 해탈이 아니라 그 깨달음을 대중을 위해 쓰겠다는 각오도 느낄 수 있었다.

Since Siddhartha, numerous Buddhist monks have written Ohdosong. Ohdosong is the Buddhists’ poems which embodies their strange fate and spiritual enlightenment. This study examines what the contents of enlightenment are and what the poems convey through Odosong. The meaning of Siddhartha’s Odosong is about an initiative of Buddhism. He decided to propagate doctrines which he had realized through Buddhism. His poems indicate that how he has changed after his awakening. Odosong of Haenueng, Choju, and Dongsan from China shows the characteristics of Buddhism. Once Buddhism limited to the concept of only the Buddhist saint, which has extend to everyone who recognizes the possibility of being a Buddha. The Odosong of Wonhoe, Haekuen, Huechung indicates that they are humble about their enlightenment. There is no intention to spread their religion widely in public. The Odosong of Haknuel, Kyungbong, Sungcheol indicates that whether it is accidental or inevitable, the realization of enlightenment is not easy. Reaching nirvana by the asceticism is not for oneself, but it can be completed when the enlightenment is also ready for the public.
