많은 모더니스트들처럼 엘리엇 역시 과학에 대해 이중성을 드러낸다. 한편으로 그가 이미지즘을 시에 적용할 때 그는 과학적 리얼리즘 특히 원자론적 리얼리즘을 동반하는 편이다. 그리고 과학적 객관성이 감정주의를 거부하는 편이기 때문에 엘리엇은 종종 과학적 객관성이 끊임없는 자아의 희생을 요구하는 자신의 몰개성이론과 통하는 점이 있다고 여긴다. 더구나 그의 시에서 시어를 가다듬거나 리얼리스틱한 장면을 구축 하려고 할 때 즉 원자적 사실들이 원자적 문장들과 상응하도록 하는 작업을 할 때 엘리엇은 과학의 분석적 방법을 채택하기도 한다. 그러나 다른 한편으로 과학의 만용 즉 사회 과학이나 인문학 등과 같은 다른 분야에 그 세력을 확대하는 것을 달갑게 여기지 않는다. 엘리엇은 과학이 자기 분야에서는 효과적으로 작동할 수 있을지 모르지만 보편적 지성이 부족하기 때문에 가장 깊은 진리를 획득하는 데는 불충분하다고 믿는다. 더구나 과학적 객관성은 부분적으로 중립성을 얻을 수 있지만 자칫 과학이 조건적인 조직화나 압박적인 체계화에 경도된다면 행동주의처럼 현실을 경직시킬 수도 있다. 반면에 예술적 강렬함이나 예술적인 도취는 혼란한 관계에서 완전한 이탈을 이룰 수 있고 메마른 현실들을 재생시킬 수 있다. 물론 이것이 진화론에 의존하는 베르그송적인 생기론을 엘리엇이 추구하는 것은 아니다. 이런 생기론 역시 순수 운동이 무모한 행동주의로 타락할 수 있는 가능성을 무시하기 때문이다.

Like many modernists, Eliot also displays his duality, when encountering the overpowering force of science. On the one hand, as he practices an Imagistic style, he brings scientific realism together. He appreciates scientific objectivity as showing a possibility of a certain link to his impersonality. Furthermore, in an attempt to construct the realistic scenes of his poems and refine his language, Eliot employs the analytic method of science. On the other hand, he disproves the overreach of science towards other fields like social sciences and humanities. Eliot believes that science, even if it is very efficiently operative in its own restricted domain, is insufficient for attaining the most profound truth due to its lack of universal intelligence. Moreover, scientific objectivity partially acquires neutrality, but it can congeal reality like behavorism, if it particularly leans toward conditional organization. In contrast, artistic contemplation achieves complete detachment from disturbed relations and revitalizes the barren realities.
