본 연구는 『네 사중주』에 대한 기독교적 평가의 내용과 엘리엇이 묘사한 “사랑”의 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 먼저 대다수의 평자들이 『네 사 중주』의 중심에는 기독교적 사고가 내포되었다고 주장한다. 즉, 인간과 하나님 사이의 관계를 묘사하면서 인간이 하나님의 뜻을 찾고 순종하게 되면 무시간의 경지에 도달할 수 있다는 내용이 『네 사중주』 전체의 핵심 내용이라 주장한다. 그리고 엘리엇이 묘사하는 “사랑” 역시 기독교적 논리와 유사하다는 사실을 본 연구를 통하여 알 수 있었다. 부연하면 사랑은 만물을 이동 또는 변화시키는 원동력이지만 개인적 욕구나 이기심이 배제되어야만 그 역할을 수행할 수 있다는 논리가 『네 사중주』에 그대로 투영되고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

This paper is to reevaluate Eliot’s idea on Christianity and examine the meanings and significance of Christian love presented in Four Quartets. As a Christian poet, he shows us the quintessence of Christianity very precisely. He illuminates the relation between God and human beings: When we obey God and His will, we can meet God and exist in a timeless and blissful moment. Eliot also presents the essential qualities of Christian love in Four Quartets. As love is important in Christianity, so he expresses it in many words and phrases such as “love is itself unmoving,” “timeless,” “undesiring,” “the cause and end of movement,” etc. We need to remember that we ought to love one another as Jesus loved. If then, we can swerve from the all opposites around us. This logic is one of the cores of Four Quartets.
