본 연구는 1786년 일본의 하야시 시헤이(林子平)가 저술한 『삼국통람도설』과 그 부도를 독일출신 클라프로트(Klaproth)가 1832년 프랑스 어로 출간한 배경과 경위에 관하여 고찰한 것이다. 또한 Klaproth가 그 저서를 어떻게 해독하게 되었는지 규명하기 위하여 그의 생애와 학문적 활동을 살펴보고 그의 언어학적 업적이 동양학 연구에 미친 영향에 대해서도 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 언어학의 천재였던 Klaproth는 언어연구의 보고였던 캅카스 일대를 답사하며 언어학의 지평을 넓혀 나아갔고 이르쿠츠크 혹은 그 인근의 캬흐타에서 입수한 것으로 추정되는 『삼국통람도설』의 번역에는 동양에서 입수한 여러 자료와 Siebold의 조언은 물론 일본계 러시아 인이었던 Kolotygin의 도움이 결정적 계기가 되었다. Klaproth의 『삼국통람도설』 입수경로는 정확히 알 수 없지만 결국 그는 동양학의 메카였던 파리에서 1832년 영국 및 아일랜드의 번역기금을 받아 하야시 저서의 번역본을 출간하게 되었다. Klaproth의 삼국통람도설은 유럽인들이 이해할 수 있도록 각주와 주해를 달아가며 설명했으므로 단순한 번역서라기보다는 편역서라 간주하는 것이 타당할 것이다.

This study examines the background and process of the translation of the San Kokf Tsou Ran To Sets(三国通覧図説) by Hayashi Shihei(林子平) of Japan published in 1786 into French version by Klaproth from Germany published in 1832. We also examined his life and academic activities in order to clarify how Klaproth deciphered the book, and examined the influence of his linguistic achievements on Oriental studies. As a result, Klaproth, who was a genius of linguistics, expanded the horizons of linguistics by exploring the area of Caucasus, which became a report of language studies. For translations of the San Kokf Tsou Ran To Sets, which is presumed to have been obtained from Kyakhta or Irkutsk, the help of several sources and Siebold's advice, as well as Kolotygin, a Japanese-Russian, became a decisive moment. In 1832 Klaproth’s San Kokf Tsou Ran To Sets was eventually published in Paris, where he received translation funds from England and Ireland. Klaproth's San Kokf Tsou Ran To Sets should be regarded as a edited translation, rather than a mere translation, because it was written with footnotes and commentaries for Europeans easy to understand.
