독도연구의 기본방향은 독도연구에 참여하고 있는 학자의 학문분야마다 다를 수 있고, 또 특정학술분야에 소속되어 있는 학자마다 다를 수 있다고 본다. 더 나아가 독도연구소마다 각기 다른 연구방향이 제시될 수 있다고 본다. 그러나 여기서 저자가 의미하는 독도연구의 기본방향은 개별 학자와 전문가의 전공분야와 학문분야를 초월해서, 각 독자연구소의 설립목적을 초월해서 대한민국이라는 국가의 입장에서 포괄적, 총체적인 독도연구의 기본 방향으로 정의하기로 한다. 그러나 이렇게 하면 독도연구의 기본방향의 제시는 국가의 과제에 속하는 것이 되고, 민간 대학 연구소로서 영남대학교 독도연구소의 범위를 넘게 된다. 따라서 저자는 독도연구의 기본방향을 제시한다기보다 그간 독도를 연구하면서 느낀 소박한 소감을 토로하여 향후 한국의 독도연구의 기본방향 제시에 미호의 참고가 되었으면 하는 과욕을 가져본다. 저자는 국제법 전공자이므로 결국 이 소감의 토로도 국제법의 영역에서의 편파적 소감이라는 비판을 받을 수 있다는 것을 자인한다. 그러나 국제법학자 이외의 독도연구학자, 특히 사학자에게 친국제법 연구를 권고해 보려는 것이 저자의 솔직한 심정이다. 이하 선제적 연구로 “독도연구에서 국제법과 사학의 관계”, “국제법의 법원”, “역사적 권원의 대체”, “지도의 증명력” 그리고 “지리적 접근론”에 관해 논술하기로 한다. 그리고 연구방법상의 제의에서 “학제연구”, “연구결과의 보급” 그리고 “독도연구소의 특성화연구”에 관해 논술하기로 한다. 마지막으로 독도에 대한 학제 연구의 필요성과 독도연구 결과의 대중화 필요성을 제의해 본다.

The basic direction of Dokdo study can be different for each academic field of scholars participating in Dokdo research, and it may be different for scholars belonging to specific academic fields. Therefore, the basic direction of Dokdo study that the author suggest here, is defined as the basic direction of comprehensive Dokdo studies from the standpoint of the Republic of Korea which transcends the fields of study and disciplines of individual scholars and experts, and beyond the purpose of establishing of each independent research institute. However, this suggestion or presentation of the basic direction of Dokdo research in Korea is eventually linked to the national task, and it goes beyond the scope of Dokdo Institute Yeungnam University as a private research institute. Therefore, the author intends to express his simple feelings while having studied Dokdo, rather than presenting the basic direction of Dokdo study. The author also hopes that this will be a reference for the future directions of Dokdo research in Korea. The author acknowledge that he himself can be criticized for having a bias in international law because the author’s major is international law. However, it is the author's sincerest desire to recommend Dokdo research scholars other than those in the field of international law, especially historians, to study Dokdo in connection with the international law. In the following, as preliminary studies to suggest, will be discussed ‘the relations between international law and history in Dokdo research’, ‘the sources of international law’, ‘the replacement of historical title by modern International law’, ‘Maps as Evidence’, and ‘the principle of contiguity’. In addition, ‘interdisciplinary researches’, ‘promotion and dissemination of Dokdo research results’, and ‘specialization of researches of Dokdo institute’ will be proposed by the author. Finally, the necessity of interdisciplinary research on Dokdo and the necessity of popularization of Dokdo study results will be hopefully proposed.
