This Study aims to investigate Luther’s name change and its theological meaning. The born Luder signed for the first time with the new name “Luther” his letter to Cardinal Albrecht of Mainz on 31. 10. 1517. And he also used the Greek “Eleutherius” for the first time in his letter to Johann Lang on 11. 11. 1517 and only shortly afterwards. Why did Luther change his name? What significance does this name change have and what is Luther's self-understanding in this name change?
In changing the form of his name, Luther brought his new self-understanding, i. e. the evangelical freedom or the person liberated by the gospel. With the change of name to “Luther,” he established the consciousness of freedom as a theological doctor, and with “Eleutherius,” he expressed that he is liberated from the shackles of scholastic theology and that he communicates his freedom to be the liberator of others, at least to become a liberation helper. In his name change or his self-understanding, a new consciousness of freedom is expressed, i. e. both the freedom from human and ecclesiastical powers, the teaching of freedom from the teaching of the bishop and the scholastic theology and a deep attachment to Christ (the bond with Christ). Moreover, this interpretation of the name change is an important testimony to the fact that Luther's Reformation breakthrough must have taken place at that time.
