본 논문은 눈과 눈물의 존재론적 의미를 깊이 있게 파고들었던 앤드 류 마블과 T. S. 엘리엇의 시들을 면밀히 검토하고자 한다. 논문의 전반부는 이의제가 앤드류 마블의 눈과 눈물에 시적으로 어떻게 극화되 었는지를 해명한다. 이 시에서 눈은 자아중심적인 주체와 인식론적인 시각이 높이 평가되는 존재론적인 영역이다. ‘눈/나의 정권’에 비판적인 마블은 이를 해체하는 신체적인 증표이자 알레고리적인 아이콘으로 눈 물을 전경화한다. 마블에게 눈물을 흘리는 것은 단지 이타성을 지향하는 수행적인 행위일 뿐만 아니라 더 중요하게는 절대타자를 향하는 하나의 영적 기도이다. 이 논문의 후반부는 눈과 눈물의 존재론이 다른 형태로 극적으로 제시된 T. S. 엘리엇의 눈물 흘리며 내가 전에 봤던 눈과 텅 빈 사람들 을 꼼꼼히 분석한다. 엘리엇의 시들은 ‘눈/나’의 헤게모니적인 권력에 대해 시인의 비판적인 목소리를 등재시키고 있다. 하지만, 이 시에서 죽음의 다른 왕국으로 묘사된 초월적인 세계에 대한 절절한 염원과 자신의 영적 구원에 대한 뿌리 깊은 회의 사이에서 끊임 없이 동요하는 엘리엇의 페르소나는 허무주의자이며, 그가 영적으로 나아가기 위해서는 눈물을 흘리는 것만으로는 충분치 않다. 구원을 받기 위해서는, 절대타자에게만 시선이 늘 고정된 “부릅뜬 눈”을 지녀야 한다. 하지만, 기독교로 개종하기 2년 전에 쓴 이 시는 시인 자신의 죽음의 왕국에는 이 눈이 부재하다는 고통스러운 자기고백을 담고 있다.

This article aims to examine poems of Andrew Marvell and T. S. Eliot, who excavate deeply the ontological meaning of eyes and tears. The first part explicates how this agenda is poetically dramatized in Andrew Marvell’s “Eyes and Tears.” In the poem, eyes become problematized as the ontological realm where a self-centered subject and his epistemological vision are highly valorized. Critical of the ‘regime of eye/I,’ Marvell foregrounds tears both as a bodily token and as an allegorical icon of its deconstruction. For Marvell, shedding tears is not just a performative act that orients toward alterity but, much more significantly, a spiritual prayer toward the absolute Other. The second part of the article closely reads T. S. Eliot’s “Eyes that last I saw in tears” and “The Hollow Men,” where the ontology of eyes and tears is re-staged in a different form. Like Marvell’s “Eyes and Tears,” Eliot’s poems register his critical voice against the hegemonic power of ‘eye/I.’ However, for the persona of Eliot, a nihilist who incessantly fluctuates between a desperate longing for the transcendental realm, described as the death’s other kingdom in the poem, and a deep-rooted skepticism of his spiritual redemption, his shedding tears is not good enough to keep on moving forward spiritually. To be redeemed, he should have the “direct eyes” which are constantly fixed on the absolute Other. However, written two years before his conversion to Christianity, the poems convey the poet’s agonizing self-confession of the absence of the direct eyes in his kingdom of death.
