Kim Hongdo (1745-after 1806) was the most eminent painter of his day. During the eighteenth century, under the reigns of Yeongjo (1724-1776) and Jeongjo (1776-1800), the Joseon dynasty enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity. The social and economic changes of the eighteenth century were accompanied by a new openness to cultural variety, artistic creativity, and innovative thinking. The art of Kim Hongdo was at the heart of the changes. Unlike many of his colleagues, Kim Hongdo was not born into a family of court painters but born into a family of low-ranking military officials and rose to prominence as the most eminent court painter during King Jeongjo’s reign. Despite his reputation and success as a painter, his social status was low. He was a member of the jungin class, the second status group of professionals and functionaries such as doctors, interpreters, accountants, and painters. Due to his status, Kim was not able to climb the social ladder. While the ruling yangban (officials and degree-holders) class enjoyed power and privilege, jungin men were denied access to high officialdom no matter how outstanding they were. Kim had an extensive knowledge of Chinese classics and poetry. Kim’s pride in his talent and knowledge is well demonstrated in Sandalwood Garden, dated 1784, now in a private collection, that depicts an elegant gathering held at his home in 1781. In his inscription, Kim associated this gathering with that hosted by the eminent Northern Song scholar-official Sima Guang (1019-1086) to express his self-esteem as an intellectual painter. Although he was a man of letters whose intellectual capacity is comparable to that of a yangban literatus, Kim was not able to change his social standing. Clearly aware of the social discrimination that the class hierarchy brought to his life, Kim Hongdo used his paintings as a means of expressing his sorrow, despair, and melancholy. Kim’s growing awareness of class, self, and identity played a significant role in the making of his art. Kim’s inscription derived from a poem by the late Tang poet Luo Ye (825-?) on A Taoist Immortal Playing the Pan Flute under a Pine, now Korea University Museum, reveals his sadness, anguish, and depression. This paper examines how Kim worked and lived in extremely hierarchical Joseon society as a jungin painter and how he explored his psychological self-hood and identity in his paintings.
