이 논문의 목적은 존 웨슬리의 일차자료, 특히 그의 설교를 중심으로 그의 교회 이해를 밝히는 것이다. 웨슬리는 그의 신학적 관점을 효과적으로 드러내는 수단으로 대부분의 설교를 출판했다. 웨슬리가 그의 사역 초기부터 교회의 본질과 형태와 기능이라는 세 가지 근본적인 문제에 대해 깊이 숙고했다는 하워드 스나이더의 분석을 기반으로 본문을 구성하고 교회의 역사에 관한 웨슬리의 견해를 더한다. 2장에서는 교회의 본질에 관한 웨슬리의 견해를 다룬다. 3장에서는 교회의 형태에 관한 웨슬리의 견해를 다룬다. 4장에서는 교회의 기능에 관한 웨슬리의 견해를 다룬다, 5장에서는 교회의 역사에 관한 웨슬리의 견해를 다룬다. 6장에서는 각 사람이 자신의 영혼을 구원하는 일과, 자신들의 구원을 달성하기 위하여 서로 돕는 일과, 모든 사람을 구원하여 그리스도의 왕국을 세우는 일이 교회의 목적이라는 웨슬리의 소견을 소개하면서 결론을 맺는다.

The purpose of this article is to uncover John Wesley’s understanding of the church by investigating primary sources, especially focusing on his sermons. Wesley published most of his sermons as an effective means of expressing his theological points of view. Chapter 2 deals with Wesley’s views on the nature of the church. Chapter 3 handles Wesley’s views on the form of the church. The author illustrates Howard A. Snyder’s diagram of the Methodist system under Wesley. Chapter 4 examines Wesley’s views on the function of the church. Chapter 5 ranges over Wesley’s views on church history. Chapter 6 concludes this article by introducing Wesley’s remarks about the original design of the church, which is to save one’s own soul, to assist each other in working out their salvation, and to set up the kingdom of Christ by saving all men.
