The purpose of the National 9.11 Museum is remembrance. Yet the question of how to remember has been a major issue for its architects and designers. The memory of 9.11 has been so distinct that it could neither be aligned to ‘history’ nor be compatible with traditional memorials. Street memorials, Michael Arad’s Reflecting Absence, and public conferences and forums all aimed to remembering 9.11. In the years following the first anniversary of the tragedy, however, remembrance gradually regressed to the traditional way of commemoration. ‘Survivor objects’ are presented as rhetoric of American exceptionalism. Phrases promoting national identity-such as the will of freedom and resistance to injustice-dominate the narrative of the display. Osama bin Laden’s brick is exhibited as a symbol of national retaliation. These demonstrate that remembrance has regrettably devolved to the alleviation of the burden of continued mourning or to self-contradiction.
