허버트는 『성전』(The Temple)의 앞부분에 「봉헌」을 배치시킴으로써 그의 모든 시상과 삶의 원천으로서 우주만물의 창조자인 신과 피조물인 인간 사이의 절대적 관계를 제시한다. 『성전』은 정체성의 공간적 구조를 만들며 「봉헌」과 함께 그것의 앞부분에 위치한 「교회현관」은 살아있는 보이는 성전인 개개인이 ‘교회’ 의 더 깊은 영적 신비로 입성하도록 준비시킨다. 그들은 의식적이고 적극적으로 죄와 대면하면서 사회전반에 역동적인 긴장을 만들고 유지하고 때때로 해결한다. 본 논문은 「봉헌」을 칼뱅주의를 바탕으로 「제단」 , 「희생」 , 「요단강 (I)」 과 함께 연구한다. 「교회현관」 [살수용기] 은 「상인방」과 함께 연구한다. 이로써 ‘교회’로 진입하기 전에 거치는 준비단계인 이 시들이 갖는 의의를 조명할 수 있을 것이다.

Herbert enlightens the absolute relationship between God, the creator of all things in the universe as a source of his poetic ideas and life, and human beings, his creation by placing “The Dedication” in the front matter of The Temple. The Temple demonstrates the spatial structure of identity and “The Church-porch,” located in the front matter of it with “The Dedication,” prepares individuals as living and visible temples for the deeper spiritual mysteries of “Church.” These individuals harness, possess and sometimes resolve dynamic tension within society at large by facing sins consciously and actively. In this paper, “The Dedication” is studied along with “The Altar,” “The Sacrifice” and “Jordan(I)” based on Calvinism. “The Church-porch” is studied with “Superliminare.” Consequently, this paper illuminates the meaning of these poems as a preparatory stage before entering “Church.”
