이 글은 그림책 서사에 나타난 모성의 의미를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 흔히 그림책의 독자를 어린이로 상정하는 까닭에 그림책 서사에서 어머니를 소재로 삼거나 모성을 주제로 택하는 경우가 많다. 그림책 영역 안에서 모성을 다룬 이야기의 비율이 큰데도 그에 대한 학술적 접근은 아직 많이 이루어지지 못했다. 그림책 서사에 나타난 모성의 양상을 검토한 결과 전통적인 모성 즉 숭고한 희생을 담보로 하는 모성을 다룬 그림책은 모성을 본능으로 전제하고 강조한 것이 특징이었다. 그러나 사회적 가치관이 달라지면서 모성은 후천적 환경과 학습에 따라 달리 발현되는 것이라는 인식 변화를 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 이런 인식을 담은 그림책에서 어머니는 주체적인 선택을 통해 가정 내 평등의 구조를 이루려 노력하고 있었다. 마지막으로 죽음과 모성의 연관성을 다룬 서사를 살펴 모성의 성격을 회귀성이라는 관점으로 파악해보았 다. 그림책에서 다루어진 모성 서사는 여기서 다룬 것보다 훨씬 다양할 것이나, 중점적인 변화와 특징을 주로 살폈다. 이후 보완 작업이 필요하다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the significance of motherhood in picture book narratives. The mother and motherhood respectively are often selected as a material and theme of picture books since kids are considered as main readers of such books. Despite the fact that many picture books deal with motherhood, academic approaches to the motherhood in picture books have been limited. The review of patterns in the motherhood depicted in picture books showed that the picture books that address traditional motherhood, which is based on the sublime sacrifice, is characterized by the motherhood being made a premise and emphasized as an instinct. With changes in social values, however, the idea about motherhood has shifted toward the one that says how it is expressed depends on the acquired environment and learning. The picture books reflecting this change depict mothers as those trying to achieve the structure of equality in their family through independent decisions. Lastly, this study seeks to investigate the motherhood in the perspective of recursion through the narratives that deal with the relationship between death and motherhood. This study investigates only main aspects of the motherhood in picture book narratives, which in fact is approached in more various ways. This means further studies are needed.
