Though liberal and progressive in various aspects of civic society such as politics, freedom of speech, human rights, and divorce, Milton has been called a conformist at best and a misogynist at worst in matters of gender equality, woman’s status, and the role of man and woman. This study is an attempt to reread his views on these subjects and find them instead of supporting gender equality in the act of God’s creation of male and female in His image. In the first Creation story in Genesis, God tells us nothing about the order of who first comes into being, let alone the hierarchical position of the two. Milton’s concept of marriage is based on this notion, rejecting the idea of the subjection of Eve to Adam before the Fall. For Milton, therefore, sexuality is not the priority in “wedded Love” because Adam and Eve were created for mutual and rational companionship between them.
