｢게론티온｣은 엘리엇이 『황무지』의 서시로 사용하려는 의도였다는 점에서 기독교적 시각으로의 감상이 가능하다. 본 연구에서는 기독교의 『성경』에 나타난 내용을 ｢게론티온｣에 적용하여 감상해 보았다. 엘리엇 은 ｢게론티온｣의 첫 도입부터 종결부까지 『성경』에 나타난 내용을 사용하고 있다. 첫 도입부에는 장기간 가문이 계속되는 장면이 연출된다. 이것은 인간이 회개하고 하나님께 돌아오기를 희망하는 메시지를 담고 있으며 인간이 하나님의 뜻을 외면하고 우상숭배에 몰입한 장면을 4명의 외국인들의 모습을 통해 전달한다. 특히 인간이 기독교를 도외시한 결과 사랑과 자비로 상징되는 예수 그리스도가 호랑이 예수 그리스도로 변환되어 출현하기 계기를 맞이하게 되며 급기야는 지상 밖으로 퇴출당하는 모습이 등장한다. 종합하면 ｢게론티온｣ 전체는 도입부부터 종결부에 이르기까지 『성경』의 내용을 엘리엇이 적절히 인유하여 기독교적 의미를 효과적으로 전달함을 알 수 있다.

This paper is to look at “Gerontion” through Bible. Generally speaking, “Gerontion” is one of the Eliot’s best works in his early poems. Like The Waste Land, it connotes Christianity very strongly. Surely it is not easy to appreciate “Gerontion” fully because of the allusion Eliot uses. Especially he employs Bible from beginning to end. Accordingly, Eliot demands that humans should obey God and His will, which is an important principle for humans to live in the world. In a word, their minds should be towards God. Nonetheless, humans deny God’s Providence and prefer the flesh (visible) to the spiritual world, sticking to do in their own ways. This results in Jesus Christ’s appearance as not a savior but a tiger. This logic is much similar to Bible. According to Bible, Jesus Christ is the punisher as well as the Savior. Eliot uses a variety of images and situations similar to Bible, such as a droughty season meaning the punishment, the idolaters like four foreigners and banishment from the space. After all, Eliot depends on Bible to write “Gerontion” and by using it he delivers its meaning effectively.
