        This study was conducted to improve the managing and storing methods of the seeds of Aralia cordata var. continentalis (Kitagawa) Y.C.Chu, to examine the viability and the germination ability of seeds with different storing conditions and methods, and to develop new ways to propagate and have better healthy seedling. Therefore, the germination rate, days required for germinating seeds, and early growth responses of Aralia cordata var. continentalis (Kitagawa) Y.C.Chu were investigated with different storing temperatures, durations and methods. The germination rate was higher in stratified storage than that in dry storage condition. The highest germination rate was with outdoor temperature at 30 days after stratified storage. The days required for germinating seeds were less than 10 days with the treatment of 25℃ and outdoor temperature in stratified storage. In dry condition, they were shorter with 4℃ and 25℃ than those with -20℃ and outdoor temperature. Leaf number of seedling was higher in stratified storage compared to that in dry condition, while it was not clearly different according to storage temperatures and durations. Leaf length and leaf width of seedling was not difference among the treatment of storage methods, temperatures, and durations. Stem length of seedling was higher in stratified storage than those in dry condition, while root length was not clearly different among the treatments. It would be assumed that temperatures, methods and durations of storage could affect much to the germination rate and the early seedling growth response.

        The generation of TiO2 nanoparticles by a thermal decomposition of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) was carried out experimentally using a tubular electric furnace at various synthesis temperatures (700, 900, 1100 and 1300℃) and precursor heating temperatures (80, 95 and 110℃). Effects of degree of crystallinity, surface area and anatase mass fraction of those TiO2 nanoparticles on photocatalytic properties such as decomposition of methylene blue was investigated. Results show that the primary particle diameter obtained from thermal decomposition of TTIP was considerably smaller than the commercial photocatalyst (Degussa, P25). Also, those specific surface areas were more than 134.4 m2/g. Resultant TiO2 nanoparticles showed improved photocatalytic activity compared with Deggusa P25. This is contributed to the higher degree of crystallinity, surface area and anatase mass fraction of TiO2 nanoparticles compared with P25.

        중이온빔(20Ne)을 담배 식물체에 조사(irradiation)하여 식물체의 생장과 DNA의 변이에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다. 발아율과 초장은 조사선 량이 증가함에 따라 감소하였다. 반면 50Gy~10Gy의 저선량에서 추대와 개화가 촉진되어 발육은 오히려 촉진되었다. 총 100개의 primer를 이용하여 RAPD분석한 결과, 59개의 primer에서 총 336개의 DNA단편이 증폭되었고, 1개의 primer에서 중이온빔 조사처리구에서만 출현하는 DNA단편이 나타났다. AFLP분석 결과, 개체 특이적인 DNA단편은 나타난 반면 중이온빔 처리구 특이적인 DNA 단편은 관찰되지 않았다.

        To investigate the physio-chemical components and properties of aerosol particles in urban area sampling of aerosol particles was carried out in the campus of Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, during snowfall. Aerosol particles were collected on millipore filter papers using a low volume air sampler. Their shapes, sizes and chemical components were analyzed by a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and an EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray). As a results, ice crystals of dendrite and column types were predominantly shown at mature and developing stage of snowfall intensity. The denerite and sector plate types of ice crystals were mainly originated from the sea but column types were come from soil. Scavenging effect by snowfall was greatly also shown at dendrite type ice crystals that embryo was fully developd. Al, Si elements were shown at high frequencies as compared with others. Na, Cl components were especially shown at high frequencies under the sea-breeze wind during snowfall. Anthropogenic aerosol particles had shown with irregular shapes and sizes, relatively. Mainly 3-7㎛ aerosol particles were abundant and coarse particles also could be seen during snowfall. Ca, Zn, Fe components mainly caused by spike tires from vehicles in winter season were dominant before snowfall, however the element S mainly caused by human activity was rich after snowfall. The pH values of snow in Sapporo city were higher than those at coastal area. The concentration of chemical components in aerosol particles was also affected by surface winds. Aerosol particles in urban area, Sapporo were mainly affected by human activities like vehicles and combustion with wind system. And their types were related with snowfall intensity.

        A number of illustrated floras are generally used when we want to identify a name of a certain tree. This method, however, has not been efficient because it has taken a great deal of time and effort for persons who do not have much knowledge on the group of the plant. In contrast to this method, the use of taxonomical keys is very efficient for finding out the group of a certain plant. But this method is very difficult for non-specialists to understand the taxonomical terminology and thus has not been of general use. In this context, this study was conducted to present the efficient way of identifying the group of a certain tree through the computer database by using the brief forms of plant organs. The database consists of eight fields such as form of trunk and evergreen or deciduous, types of leaf and leaf arrangement, existence of prickle and hair on twig, form of leaf margin, leaf form and venation, existence of hair on leaf surface and petiole, length of leaf and petiole. The 222 species of tree used for landscape architecture were sorted by items of the eight fields. As a result, the 222 species were divided into 185 groups and the one group contains 7species, 2 groups contain 3 species, 27 groups contain 2 species and 155 groups contain only one species. Therefore it is suggested that the use of computer database and illustrated floras is very easy and efficient in identifying a tree.

        This study was conducted to evaluate the level of atmospheric heavy metals and the relationship of that concentration with weather conditions. This research monitored the concentration of Total Suspended Particulates (TSP) at every three hours by using High Volume Air Sampler from December 24th, of 1995 to Febuary 20th, 1996 in Kimhae area, which recently became a rapidly growing residential and industrial sitc. The items such as air-temperature, relative humidity, radition, wind speed, and wind direction were monitored by using Atmospheric Weather System at the same time. From the collected TSP, the concentration of heavy metals were analyzed by using the Atomic Absorption Spcetrophotometry. The mean concentration of TSP was 110.4 ㎍/㎥, and the mean concentration of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cadmium (Cd), were 0.837 ㎍/㎥, 0.486 ㎍/㎥, 0.264 ㎍/㎥, 0.157 ㎍/㎥, 0.054 ㎍/㎥, respectively. Regarding daily variations, the concentration of TSP was highest in the morning (158.1 ㎍/㎥) followed by evening (119.4 ㎍/㎥) and afternoon (111.1 ㎍/㎥). The concentration of Pb and Mn was higher in the morning, and that of Cu, Cr and Cd was higher in the afternoon and the evening. Regarding the relationship between the concentration of pollutants and weather condition, the concentration TSP revealed positive correlation with temperature, humidity, wind speed, but negative correlation with radition (p<0.01). The concentration of Mn revealed positive correlation with temperature and humidity, but negative correlation with wind speed (p<0.01). And the the concentration of pollutants and weather condition revealed higher correlation within the same time period. In summary, the paralleled mornitoring of air conditions and weather condition should be recommended to get the correct informations concerning the pollution and to prevent the deterioration of air conditions.
