Background: Disuse Syndrome is defined as a significantly reduced functional state due to acute disease or surgery. Despite the many advantages to robot rehabilitation, there have been no reported cases of robot rehabilitation being applied to patients with disuse syndrome. Objectives: To investigated report cases of robot rehabilitation in patients diagnosed with disuse syndrome after severe COVID-19 infection. Design: Case report. Methods: The subject of this study was an 81-year-old male who was 161 cm tall and weighed 55.3 kg. At the time of admission to the hospital, the patient had a manual muscle testing (MMT) score of 36 points and a modified barthel index (MBI) score of 7 points. Additionally, the patient had a fall risk assessment score of 10 and a visual analogue scale of 6 for lower back pain. The patient's MMT, trunk impairment scale (TIS), and MBI were followed up. The patient received acute rehabilitation treatment for 4 weeks, followed by additional robotic rehabilitation. For 4 weeks, a standing tilt robot and a wearable robot were applied for 2 weeks each. Results: After 4 weeks of intervention, MMT, TIS, and MBI were improved in the patients. MMT improved from 36 points to 41 points. TIS improved from 0 to 13 points. MBI improved from 7 points to 29 points. Conclusion: There is a need to pay more attention to the rehabilitation of patients with disuse syndrome in recovery rehabilitation hospitals. It is speculated that robot-assisted rehabilitation can be applied to patients with disuse syndrome.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of walking on a treadmill while using dynamic functional electrical stimulation (Dynamic FES) on functional ability and gait in chronic stroke patients. This was a prospective, randomized controlled study. Twelve patients with chronic stroke (>;24 months) who were under grade 3 in dorsiflexor strength with manual muscle test were included and randomized into intervention (Dynamic FES) (n1=7) and control (FES) (n2=5). Both the Dynamic FES group and FES group were given a neuromuscular development treatment. The Dynamic FES group has implemented a total of 60 minutes of exercise treatment and gait training with Dynamic FES application. The FES group, with the addition of applying FES while sitting, has also implemented a total of 90 minutes of gait training on treadmill after the exercise treatment. Both two groups accomplished the program, twice a week, for a total of 24 times in a 12-week period. Exercise treatment, gait training on treadmill, and both Dynamic FES and FES were implemented for 30 minutes each. Korean version activities-specific balance confidence scale (K-ABC) was measured to determine self-efficacy in balance function. Timed up and go (TUG) test was performed to evaluate the physical performance. K-ABC, TUG, Berg balance scale (BBS), modified physical performance test (mPPT) and G-walk were evaluated at baseline and at 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, statistically significant differences (p<.05) were apparent in the Dynamic FES group in the changes in K-ABC and BBS. mPPT, TUG, gait speed, stride length and stance phase duration (%) were compared with the FES group. K-ABC had higher correlation to BBS, along with mPPT to TUG. Our results suggest that walking with Dynamic FES in chronic stroke patients may be beneficial for improving their balance confidence, functional ability and gait.
Nitrogen-doped microporous carbons were prepared using a polyvinylidene fluoridemelamine mixture. The electrochemical performance of the nitrogen-doped microporous carbons after being subjected to different carbonization conditions was investigated. The nitrogen to carbon ratio and specificsurface area decreased with an increase in the carbon-ization temperature. However, the maximum specificcapacitance of 208 F/g was obtained at a carbonization temperature of 800°C because it produced the highest microporosity.
Transparent and conducting thin films of Ta-doped SnO2 were fabricated on a glass substrate by a pulse laserdeposition(PLD) method. The structural, optical, and electrical properties of these films were investigated as a function ofdoping level, oxygen partial pressure, substrate temperature, and film thickness. XRD results revealed that all the deposited filmswere polycrystalline and the intensity of the (211) plane of SnO2 decreased with an increase of Ta content. However, theorientation of the films changed from (211) to (110) with an increase in oxygen partial pressure (40 to 100mTorr) and substratetemperature. The crystallinity of the films also increased with the substrate temperature. The electrical resistivity measurementsshowed that the resistivity of the films decreased with an increase in Ta doping, which exhibited the lowest resistivity(ρ~1.1×10−3Ω·cm) for 10wt% Ta-doped SnO2 film, and then increased further. However, the resistivity continuouslydecreased with the oxygen partial pressure and substrate temperature. The optical bandgap of the 10wt% Ta-doped SnO2 filmincreased (3.67 to 3.78eV) with an increase in film thickness from 100-700nm, and the figure of merit revealed an increasingtrend with the film thickness.
This paper investigates the several characteristics of education view through <A Poem recommending Sohak(勸小學詩)>,which is included in the collection of Kim An Kuk and illuminates its the meaning of the times. Sohak is an important book on self‐culture that is used to enlighten Chosun society through confucian morality. In the early age of Chosun Dynasty, Kim An Kuk wrote <A Poem recommending Sohak(勸小學詩)> to advise to practice the theory of Sohak, which was like an introduction of confucian education, encouraged Hyanggyo students to follow the moral standard of confucian society, and made efforts to educate country people. This enlightenment and being custom(化民成俗) are originated from the active incentive of Sohak education by Jungjong. Kim An Kuk was appointed to the governor of Kyungsang‐do and emphasized Sohak intensively. For this, there were vigorous Sohak education campaigns. In <A Poem recommending Sohak(勸小學詩)>, which was written in this situation, there were three remarkable perspectives of education. One of them is the perspective that accentuate morality. At that time, as the graft and moral corruption of the Hungu pervaded, Kim An Kuk emphasized to recover morality with ethical policy, highlight confucian moral ethics and educate people. Secondly, it is the educational view of underlining practicability. The Hungu highlighted poem and lines and made a display of literature. He criticized it and stressed having moral manner and practicing moral ethics. At last, it is the educational view that emphasizes enlightenment of custom in daily life. <A Poem recommending Sohak(勸小學詩)> by Kim An Kuk accentuates that it is possible that confucian customs are penetrated to daily life naturally and moral confucian human type is formed in the living. Following this, it enunciated that <A Poem recommending Sohak(勸小學詩)> was created to reform the Chosun society in 16th centuries that ethical discipline was collapsed by the corruption and power abuse of the Hungu and through this, it also stated the characteristics of Kim An Kuk’s educational view.

An Individual-Based Model (IBM) was developed by employing natural and toxic survival rates of individuals to elucidate the community responses of benthic macroinvertebrates to anthropogenic disturbance in the streams. Experimental models (doseresponse and relative sensitivity) and mathematical models (power law and negative exponential distribution) were applied to determinate the individual survival rates due to acute toxicity in stressful conditions. A power law was additionally used to present the natural survival rate. Life events, covering movement, exposure to contaminants, death and reproduction, were simulated in the IBM at the individual level in small (1 m) and short (1 week) scales to produce species abundance distributions (SADs) at the community level in large (5 km) and long (1~2 years) scales. Consequently, the SADs, such as geometric series, log-series, and log-normal distribution, were accordingly observed at severely (Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP⁄10), intermediately (BMWP⁄40) and weakly (BMWP›50) polluted sites. The results from a power law and negative exponential distribution were suitably fitted to the field data across the different levels of pollution, according to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The IBMs incorporating natural and toxic survival rates in individuals were useful for presenting community responses to disturbances and could be utilized as an integrative tool to elucidate community establishment processes in benthic macroinvertebrates in the streams.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of temperature and nematicides on endospore attachment characteristics of 2 Korean isolates of nematodeparasitic bacteria, Pasteuria penetrans. P. penetrans CJ-1 and 98-35 isolates and 3 species of root-knot nematodes in U. of Florida were used ; Meloidogyne incognita (MI), M. arenaria (MA), and M. javanica (MJ). Three nematicide levels of 2, 4, and 6 ppm were compared by treating Vydate and Nemacur in the endospore containing soils. The endospores were attached to the root-knot nematode juveniles by centrifugal method. Reproduction of the isolates was checked by observing root-knot nematode females harvested from inoculated tomato roots.
1. Among the two Korean isolates, 98-35 showed attachments to MI, MA, and MJ juveniles, but it could not reproduce in any species. CJ-1 reproduced on all the 3 tested root-knot nematode species.
2. Endospores pretreated in -14°C showed higher attachment rate than those pretreated in 4, 24, and 40℃.
3. Nemacur treatments significantly suppressed the attachment of the endospores to the juveniles, while Vydate treatment effects were negligible.
To enhance the embryo preservation technology and better application of embryo transfer technique to the field (dairy science or animal reproduction. etc.), we examined the viabilities of bovine embryos produced in vitro and in vivo after cryopreservation according to their developmental stage and thawing temperature. Bovine embryos from in vivo/vitro fertilization (Hanwoo) were examined at day 7, 8, and 9. Survival rates and total cell numbers of in vivo fertilized embryos were as follows: morulae 68.8% and ; blastocysts 80.5% and ; expanded blastocysts 77.4% and , respectively. Rates of embryo development for blastocysts and expanded blastocysts after thawing were significantly higher than that of morula stage embryos (p<0.05). While survival rates of in vitro fertilized embryos according to developmental stage showed no significant difference among groups (morula 67.9%; blastocyst 74.3%; and expanded blastocyst 79.4%), total cell numbers were significantly lower than those of other groups (morula ; blastocyst ; and expanded blastocyst ) For the viability according to thawing temperature, survival rate was higher in .
The Zr-based bulk metallic glass matrix composites of a mixture of gas-atomized metallic glass powders and Fe-based nanostructured powders were fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The Fe-based nanostructured powders adopted for the enhancement of plasticity were well distributed in the matrix after consolidation, and the matrix remains as a fully amorphous phase. The successful consolidation of metallic glass matrix composite with high density was attributed to viscous flow in the supercooled liquid state during spark plasma sintering. Unlike other amorphous matrix composites, in which improved ductility could be obtained at the expense of their strength, the developed composite exhibited improvement both in strength and ductility. The ductility improvement in the composite was considered to be due to the formation of multiple shear bands under the presence of the Fe-based nanostructured particles.
The wetting behavior of molten Fe on α-Al2O3 single crystals with three different crystallographic orientations, R(01ar12), A(11ar20), and C(0001), was investigated using the sessile drop method under a 10%H2-Ar atmosphere at 1873 K. It was found that the differences in the contact angle of the three differently oriented α-Al2O3 single crystals were not significant (within 5˚, which corresponded to the changes in the work of adhesion of 157mJ/m2) due to the surface reconstruction.
The tribological properties of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) filled with two kinds of carbon black filler were examined. Different types of Semi-Reinforcing Furnace (SRF), and High Abrasion Furnace (HAF) blacks were used as filler material to test the influence of carbon black particle size on the friction and wear of NBR. Results from tribological tests using a ball on disk method showed that the smaller HAF particles were more effective for reducing the wear of NBR during frictional sliding. The hardness, elastic modulus at 100% elongation, and elongation at break were measured to examine the correlation between the effects of carbon black on the mechanical and tribological properties of the NBR specimens. The wear tracks of the NBR specimens were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The wear tracks for NBR with different ratios of SRF and HAF showed clearly different abrasion patterns. Mechanisms for the friction and wear behavior of NBR with different sizes of carbon black filler were proposed using evidence from wear track observation, as well as the mechanical and tribological test results.
Adelograptus brevibrachiatus sp. novo is erected for materials previously referred to as Adelograptus cf. tenellus from the circum-Pacific area. The species shares many morphological characteristics with Adelograptus tenellus from Europe but differs from it by possessing typically short stipe lengths throughout rhabdosome due to less thecal density along the stipes. Taxonomic characteristics of A. cf. tenellus reported from circum-Pacific area are compared with each other. The paleogeographic distribution of A. tenellus seems to be restricted within Europe, while that of A. brevibrachiatus within circum-Pacific area.
This project was carried out under the assumption that applying a science history program to a teaching-learning process would lead to students' increased interest in science and increase the development of their scientific process skills. The project aimed at designing an effective science history program which would help to improve students' scientific process skills, to enhance their interest in learning science, and to maintain their inquiry learning abilities. The survey for the activity objectives was produced by the authors. The test items used for testing students' scientific attitude and scientific process skills were created by Korea National University of Education. The survey about scientific perception indicated that there was a meaningful difference of p=0.005 before and after implementing this program. The survey about scientific interest shows that students became interested in science, science-learning and science-related activities after participating in the science history program. Students' scientific process sills increased by 9% after the program was implemented in the subjects' classes. This indicates that the science history program was effective in improving students' science scientific process skills. Since this project, which targeted 8th grade science education activities, has proven to be effective, developing other programs suitable for younger and older students seems promising, too.
