Comparative toxicity of different groups of pesticides on Apis mellifera L. were tested in the laboratory. Commercial formulations dissolved in water from the highest dose level marked on the label were serially diluted to 10^(-6) times to carry out oral trials on each pesticide. Fungicide (Metconazole), herbicide (Glyphosate), acaricide (Amitraz) and 3 insecticides (organophosphate Fenitrothion, neonicotinoids of Thiacloprid and Thiamethoxam) were compared. Thiamethoxam and fenitrothion caused higher mortality, and amitraz showed intermediate level of mortality while herbicide and fungicide showed minimal impacts. Among neonicotinoids, Thiamethoxam was highly toxic but thiacloprid showed mortality less than 25% even at the highest concentration. LC50 values were estimated as Amitraz 197.70, Fenitrothion 2.20, and Thiamethoxam 0.188 ppm at 24 h after treatment. Fungicide, herbicide and a neonicotinoid thiacloprid were all showed low oral toxicity. This study confirmed that the old pesticide, organophosphate was highly toxic and two different toxic path way exist for neonicotinoid pesticides.

The potato tuber moth (PTM) is an oligophagous pest on solanaceous crops. We tested adult olfactory behavior and larval development on 5 cultivated tomato varieties leaves including Moneymaker, Campari, Ailsa craig, LA3475 and E6203, and one wild species, S. pimpinellifolium. Bioassay on PTM larvae showed highest developmental performances in Ailsa craig, and lowest in LA3475. Tomato leaf hydro-distilled oils of Moneymaker, Campari, Ailsa craig, S. pimpinellifolium and E6203 showed strong attractiveness and LA3475 exhibited repulsiveness for mated adult PTM of both sexes in two-armed bioassay. The hydro-distilled oils of all tomato leaves contain the fatty acid n-hexadecanoic acid as a major compound. We conformed presence of n-hexandecanoic acid (palmitic acid) in the leaves by GC-MS. LA3475 consists of (1-hexyltetraecyl) cyclohexane (10.5%) as the second major compound which was absent in all other tomato varieties. A standard sample palmitic acid was tested against the pest at 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/ml did not show any significant olfactometer effect. On other hand, phytol showed a weak attractiveness (60.7-63.6%) and (57.6-60.5%) for male and female PTM, respectively at 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/ml. Additionally, SEM of these tomato varieties leaves showed they have trichomes with distinct shapes. We are working on HPLC, and GC-MS analysis of specific chemicals in trichomes of these tomato varieties leaves.

Small hive beetles (SHBs) are parasites of bee colonies and is one of the invasive pest species worldwide. In this study, we aimed to investigate a chemical responsible for the attractiveness of a hive to this pest. Based on the laboratory observation, we found the fermented pollen dough (honey bee food) was highly attractive to adult SHBs. Olfactometer bioassay showed the crude methanol extract of this material is attractive to both sexes (> 60%). However, the methanol extracts of fresh honey and pollen patty which we used as a food of SHB were not attractive to the pest. The crude methanol extract of fermented pollen dough was subjected to partitioning with n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. The n-hexane and chloroform fractions were attractive > 80% for both sex SHBs. On the other hand, ethyl acetate and n-butanol were repulsive >70% and >80%, respectively. The wandering larvae of the pest showed a reverse response for the solvent fractions observed in adults. HPLC and GC-MS analysis indicated the methanol extract of fermented pollen dough constitute butanoic acid (7.70%), neopentylamine (7.29%), (E)-9-octadecenoic acid ethyl ester (3.89%) and hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester. While these compounds were not found even in a trace level in the methanol extract of honey and pollen patty. Based on this findings these constituents of the fermented pollen dough were formed by the action of SHB and its larvae and we believe these volatile organic compounds are responsible for attractiveness to SHB as pollen dough undergoes attach by SHB and ferment. We are working on investigating attractiveness of each of these chemicals toward the pest. We recommend further work on these chemicals for their application to control this pest.

The economic contribution of the pollinators is often estimated in order to understand the importance of the pollinator population, particularly insects. Also declining of the pollinator population would be a potential threat to food production which in turn affects nutritional security negatively. Unlike the economic contribution in terms of currency, seldom the contribution has been addressed in terms of nutrients. In the present paper, we estimated the contribution of pollinator population in the micronutrients viz. minerals and vitamins supply of the country. A higher pollinator dependency than present global average was noted in connection with all minerals deemed nutritionally important and most of the vitamins. Pollinator-dependent (PD) crops provide a substantial share of micronutrients to the population, especially with regard to vitamins C and E and elements iron. A positive trend was found in the PD supply of all micronutrients over the last 30 years in Korea, but the rate of increment was somewhat lower for vitamins C and K as well as folate.

The potato tuber moth (PTM) is an oligophagous insect pest on solanaceous crops. Potato tuber is regarded as the main host of PTM but it can also feed, develop and reproduce on other solanaceous crops such as tomato. We tested adult olfactory behavior and larval development on 5 cultivated tomato varieties namely Money maker, Campari, Ailsa craig, LA 3475 (M82) and E-6203, and one wild species, S. pimpinellifolium. Tomato leaf hydro-distilled oils of Money maker, Campari, Ailsa craig, S. pimpinellifolium and E-6203 leaves showed strong attractiveness for mated adult PTM of both sexes (> 70%) in two-armed bioassay. LA 3475 (M82) oil showed repulsive response (83.7% for males and 87.3% for females). GC-MS analysis of the hydro-distilled oils of all tomato leaves contain the fatty acid n-hexadecanoic acid (Palmitic acid) as a major compound with relative percentage as S. pimpinelifollium (32.1%) > E-6203 (26.5%) > money maker (26.1%) > LA-3475 (16.3%) > Campari (15.0%) > Ailsa craig (10.4%). LA 3475 consists of (1-hexyltetraecyl)cyclohexane (10.5%) as the second major compound which was absent in all other tomato varieties. In no choice test, PTM larvae showed highest developmental performances such as number of mines, headcapsule size, pupal weight and survival in Ailsa craig, and lowest in LA 3475. In choice test, similar results were observed. This study indicates the leaf volatile of n-hexadecanoic acid might be responsible for PTM attractiveness and (1-hexyltetraecyl)cyclohexane for repulsiveness. And varieties of tomato leaves could support suitable nutritional contents to PTM, posing pest potential in the future where higher exposure is expected.

The potato tuber moth Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) is an important pest for solanaceous crops mainly potatoes. There is an increasing concern on host expansion to tomato which is higher cash crop. We monitored PTM population dynamics in potato dominated area and tomato greenhouse area in Andon, South Korea for 2 years using delta sticky trap with sex pheromone lure. PTM population was higher in potato growing area and low in tomato area; 19.82 PTM/trap/week and 0.8 PTM/trap/week, respectively. Peak occurrence time was related to the crop phenologies; August in potato field and November in tomato field. Land scape analysis showed that there was significant positive correlation between habitat potato field itself and green house with the number of moth catch during the monitoring period.

The potato tuber moth (PTM) is a cosmopolitan insect pest and hosts various solanaceous crops including tomato. We tested olfactory behavior and larval development of PTM on different varieties of tomato fruit namely, Money maker, Campari, Ailsa craig, LA 3475 (M82) and E-6203, and one wild species, S. pimpinellifolium. We also analyzed essential oil of the tomato fruits through GC/MS. There were significance differences in immature developmental period and head capsule size among the tested varieties. PTM larvae showed highest survival on Ailsa craig (66.0±6.0) and E-6203 (64.0±4.0) and lowest on S. pimpinellifolium (14.0±6.0). The major compounds found in the tomato fruit’s essential oils include n-hexadecanoic acid (14.2%) and 2-octylcyclopropaneoctanal (8.7%) in Money makers; hexadecanoic acid, 2-hydroxy -1-(hydroxymethyl) ethyl ester (13.1%) in Campari; tert-hexadecanethiol (6.8%) and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, bis (2-ethylhexyl) ester (6.2%) in Ailsa craig; (Z)-13-docosenamide (13.39) in S. pimpinellifolium; Eicosane (4.4%,), (Z)-9 -octadecenamide (4.2%), and n-hexadecanoic acid (4.1%) in E-6208. The larval development result on tomato fruit could support its suitable nutritional contents to PTM, posing pest potential in the future where higher exposure is expected.

Potato tuber moth (PTM) is damaging pest of solanaceous crop invasive to Korea. We showed earlier that it inflicteddamage to tomato. So in this study, we evaluated accessions of Solanum lycopersicum (Money maker, Campari, AilsaCraig, LA3475 and e6203) and a wild variety of S. pimpinellifolium for resistance variability. A day old larvae of PTMwere inoculated to leaves and fruits. The result showed high survivability on leaves of Ailsa Craig (95.6%±4.4 SE) andlow on fruits of S. pimpinellifolium (14.0%±6.0). Leaves of LA3475 and fruits of S. pimpinellifolium were less preferred.Volatile compounds could be the cause. Density of trichomes could also influence PTM activity on leaves. These resultsgive us information on resistance variability which could be utilized if there is a host shift due to climate change.

The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), is a ubiquitous pest on potatoes, tobacco, tomato and othercrops. The small hive beetle (SHB), Aethina tumida Murray, is a pest of European honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) in severalcountries in the world. Propolis is a balm-like substance collected from plants by bees. Its chemical composition variesand depends mainly on the flora in the region in which it is collected as well as the bee species. Hitherto biologicalproperties and the chemical composition of the essential oil extracted from propolis of Korean origin are unknown. Inthis study, while searching for an environmentally friendly method to control these pests we evaluated the repellent effectsof essential oil of propolis collected from Bee Lab of Andong National University and found that it possess repellentactivity against both small hive beetle and potato tuber moth. Moreover, a total of 171 constituents of the oil were identifiedof which 6 were major compounds using GC/MS analysis. We also compared the chemical composition of this oil withthose from 2 Ethiopian regions.

The two-spotted spider (Tetranychus urticae) is an important pest of many agricultural crops. Laboratory bioassayswere conducted to determine the toxicity of Pyflubumide and Cyenopyrafen against three populations of T. urticae collectedfrom apple orchards. The adults and eggs of three populations all showed susceptibility to Pyflubumide and Cyenopyrafen,as the 50% lethal concentration (LC50) values were all lower than each of the recommended concentrations. There wereconsiderable differences in susceptibility of the acaricides between eggs and adults in different populations. Pyflubumideshowed highest toxicity to adults of Yeongju population (LC50 = 1.40 mg/l) and eggs of Andong population (LC50 =0.54 mg/l). Cyenopyrafen showed lowest toxicity to adults of Andong population (LC50 = 20.29 mg/l) while displayedhighest toxicity to their eggs (LC50 = 2.64 mg/l). These results suggested that T. urticae had not developed resistancein these three regions, Pyflubumide and Cyenopyrafen can serve as alternative chemical candidate for integrated mite managementin apple orchards.

The present study was carried out to assess the perception of entomophagy in the Korean population. 329 respondentsof varying age groups were included in a semi-structured questionnaire survey. Results revealed that altogether 88% ofthe respondents knew ‘entomophagy’ fully or partially which is higher than few other scientific reports examined consumeracceptance in different countries, probably suggesting a rich tradition of using insects for food and medicinal purposesin Korea. Males were found more inclined to accept insect as food while females were neophobic. A similar trend wasobserved in case of using insects as a food ingredient. Acceptance of insect as food and or food ingredients was foundmore among older people in comparison to younger people which could be presumably because of familiarity with ancestralknowledge. Taste or flavor was found the most important determinant factor followed by nutrition and environmental issues. The outcomes of the study advocate ‘awareness’ of food safety, environmental and health issues among consumers canbe an instrument for wide acceptance of entomophagy.

Recently we are facing increased frequency of the vespa encounters not only in the natural forested area but also in the residential area. These could be partly from the increased population sizes of diverse vespa species as well as the expansion of their nest habitats from mountainous environments to the human residences, resulting occasional casualty or sting damages. In terms of the risk management, we studied hornet attack and defense behaviors relative to the visual or physical disturbance. Four species of vespa showed strongest aggressiveness to the black colored target with high rate of bumping and stinging followed by red color. In most case, vespa showed behavioral change to the high alerts and hover-flying surveillance out of the nest entrance when people approached ap. 10 m close to the nest. When the nest was disturbed by the stick beating, then swarm of defensive force moved out and begin to showed the defensive behavior including stinging or propelling poison. The defense boundary was related to the nest colony size with larger defense line for larger colony. But it was between 15 to 25m from the nest location.

Potato tuber moth (PTM), phthorimaea operculella, invaded into Korea in 1968 but recently expanding the distribution possibly due to climate change. Ten insecticides were evaluated against the neonates and eggs of PTM. Vial contact test for neonates and dipping for eggs were conducted. LT50 at recommended dose and LC50 at 24 h were determined. Shortest LT50 was observed for fenthion (0.37 h) whereas longest LT50 from spinetoram (13.56 h). LC50 at 24 h was lowest in Abamectin (0.0052 ppm) followed by Emamectin benzoate (0.0084 ppm). Cartap hydrochloride significantly inhibited hatchability of 1, 2, 3, 4 day-old eggs (95.7, 94.0, 94.2, 89.8 % respectivly). Our result indicated that cartap hydrochloride was effective against both neonate and eggs of PTM.

Asitic apple leafminer, Phyllonorycter ringoniella Matsumura, is an important pest in apple orchard, however its reproductive characteristics and seasonal adaption is poorly understood. The longevity and fecundity of P. ringoniella were investigated at seven constant temperatures (13.7, 15.6, 20.5, 23.7, 26.1, 30.2, and 32.3℃), 60-80% RH, and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h. Female adult longevity increased as the temperature decreased. The highest fecundity was obtained at 15.6℃ (65.2 eggs/female), and the fecundity decreased as temperature increased. The oviposition model were comprised by four components: adult aging rate model, total fecundity model, age-specific oviposition rate model, and age-specific survival rate model. Female adult aging rates were well described by an inverse second-order polynomial function and the total fecundity model was well described by an extreme value function. Age-specific cumulative oviposition rate was well fitted to a three-parameter Weibull function and age-specific survival rate to a sigmoid function, respectively. The model would be useful in developing population model for P. ringoniella and establishing management strategy against P. ringoniella in apple orchards.

Asiatic apple leafminer, Phyllonorycter ringoniella Matsumura (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) is an important insect pest in apple orchard, however little is known about its demography and relationship with environmental factors. The effect of five constant temperatures (13.3, 15.3, 20.7, 26.1, and 30.0℃) on the demography of P. ringoniella was examined based on jackknife randomization method in the laboratory. The lowest (34.0%) and highest (63.3%) survivorship of immature stages occurred at 30.0 and 20.7℃, respectively. Sex ratio was estimated to be 0.5 and was unaffected by the temperature. Mean developmental times of immature stage were inversely related to temperature and varied from 25.9 days at 26.1℃ to 76.4 days at 13.3℃. Female adult longevity was longest at 15.3℃ (18.6 ± 0.96 days) and shortest at 30℃ (5.4 ± 0.27 days). The highest (86.24) and lowest (13.59) gross fecundity rate occurred at 15.3 and 30.0℃, respectively, while daily egg production displayed its highest (6.48) and lowest (2.12) values at 26.1 and 30.0℃, respectively. The highest net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (r), and finite rate of increase (λ) obtained at 20.7℃ were 12.43, 0.064, and 1.067, respectively. Mean generation time (T) decreased with increasing temperatures from 85.24 days at 13.3℃ to 30.48 days at 30.0℃. Doubling time (DT) varied significantly with temperature and the shortest value (10.75 days) was obtained at 20.7℃. The life expectancies of female adult were estimated to be 16.2, 18.6, 10.8, 7.2, and 5.4 days at 13.3, 15.3, 20.7, 26.1, and 30.0℃, respectively. This study was the first time to report demographic biology of P. ringoniella, thus it provide potential direction for future research on P. ringoniella and its natural enemies in apple orchards.
