In this study, dynamic vertical displacement of liquid in the tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) is measured by a laser Doppler vibrometer(LDV) to overcome limitations of existing sensors and to leverage noncontact sensing. Addressing advantages of noncontact measurements, operational principles of the LDV to measure velocity and displacement of a target object in motion is explained. The feasibility of application of the LDV to measurement of liquid motion in the TLCD is experimentally explored. A series of shake table tests with the TLCD are performed to determine requirements of application of the LDV. Based on the experimental results, it is proved that the LDV works under the condition of adding dye to the liquid by increasing the intensity of reflected laser and thus validity is verified by comparison with a conventional wave height meter.

In recent years, an outrigger damper system has been proposed to reduce dynamic responses of tall buildings. However, a study on outrigger damper system is still in its early stages. In this study, time history analysis was performed to investigate the dynamic response control performance of outrigger damper. To do this, a actual scale 3-dimensional tall building model with outrigger damper system has been developed. El Centro earthquake was applied as an earthquake excitation. The control performance of the outrigger damper system was evaluated by varying stiffness and damping values. Analysis results, on the top floor displacement response to the earthquake load, was greatly effected by damping value. And acceleration response greatly was effected by stiffness value of damper system. Therefore, it is necessary to select that proper stiffness and damping values of the outrigger damper system.

The proposed hybrid damper installs at a coupling beam and consists of a high-damping rubber (HDR) and steel pin. The proposed hybrid damper adopted a pin-lock system acts as a viscoelastic damper under wind load (small displacement) while it behaves as a hysteretic damper under earthquake load (large displacement). In this paper, the pin-lock mechanism and structural performance of the proposed hybrid damper is evaluated through experiment. Experiments were carried out with the variables which displacement, loading frequency and steel pin quantities were used. Test results showed that the pin-lock mechanism and the performance of the hybrid damper under a large displacement were verified. Also equivalent damping ratios of HDR were increasing at a small displacement as displacement amplitudes were increasing. However HDR did not depend on frequency,

An outrigger damper system has been proposed to reduce dynamic responses of tall buildings. In previous studies, an outrigger damper system was optimally designed to decrease a wind-induced or earthquake-induced dynamic response. When an outrigger damper system is optimally designed for wind excitation, its control performance for seismic excitation deteriorates. Therefore, a smart outrigger damper system is proposed in this study to make a control system that can simultaneously reduce both wind and seismic responses. A smart outrigger system is made up of MR (Magnetorheological) dampers. A fuzzy logic control algorithm (FLC) was used to generate command voltages sent for smart outrigger damper system and the FLC was optimized by genetic algorithm. This study shows that the smart outrigger system can provide good control performance for reduction of both wind and earthquake responses compared to the general outrigger system.

In this study, Stockbridge damper was adopted to reduce the reponses of structures under earthquakes. A finite element analysis software, SAP2000, was used to simulate the structural response and the control device under dynamic loads. A 3 story frame model and the proposed control device, Stockbridge damper, were designed under laboratory conditions. In this research, a pendulum type tuned mass damper (PTMD) was also adopted in order to compare with the Stockbridge damper. Harmonic loads were applied to verity the control performance of both control devices in each mode. In results, it has been found that the Stockbirdge damper decreases significantly the responses of the structure more than the PTMD under the harmonic loadings. The El Centro and Northridge earthquakes were also applied in order to investigate the performance by both control devices. The responses of the building demonstrate that the Stockbridge damper reduces the response of the building structure during earthquakes more effectively than the PTMD.

A new design concept for integrated thermal energy storage system is suggested to increase energy saving rate for heating and cooling system of the closed glass greenhouse. Heat pump of air source is installed in the mechanical room and air flows then controlled by damper system located between the greenhouse and outdoor environments. A damper control algorithm is designed to enhance the usage of excessive energy in the glass greenhouse. Since the proposed system is installed at the actual glass greenhouse site for experimental verification of energy savings, the proposed system with damper control is compared with conventional greenhouse heating and cooling system. From results, it is found that more than 10% increase of energy saving rate is achieved.

This paper is concerned with an experimental research to control of random vibration caused by external loads specially in cable-stayed bridges which tend to be structurally flexible. For the vibration control, we produced a model structure modelled on Seohae Grand Bridge, and we designed a shear type MR damper. On the center of its middle span, we placed a shear type MR damper which was to control its vibration and also acquire its structural responses such as displacement and acceleration at the same site. The experiments concerning controlling vibration were performed according to a variety of theories including un-control, passive on/off control, and clipped-optimal control. Its control performance was evaluated in terms of the absolute maximum displacements, RMS displacements, the absolute maximum accelerations, RMS accelerations, and the total power required to control the bridge which differ from each different experiment method. Among all the methods applied in this paper, clipped-optimal control method turned out to be the most effective to reduces of displacements, accelerations, and external power. Finally, It is proven that the clipped-optimal control method was effective and useful in the vibration control employing a semi-active devices such MR damper.

Recently, the concept of damped outrigger system has been proposed for tall buildings. But, structural characteristics and design method of this system were not sufficiently investigated to date. In this study, the dynamic response control performance of outrigger damper has been analyzed. To this end, a simplified analysis model with outrigger damper system has been developed. Use the El Centro seismic(1940, NS) analysis was performed. Analysis results, on the top floor displacement response to the earthquake response, did not have a big effect. However, acceleration response control effect was found to be excellent. The increase of outrigger damper capacity usually results in the improved control performance. However, it is necessary to select that proper stiffness and damping values of the outrigger damper system because, the outrigger damper having large capacity is result in heavy financial burden.

Damped outrigger systems have been proposed as a novel energy dissipation system to protect tall buildings from severe earthquakes and strong wind loads. In this study, semi-active damping devices such as magnetorheological (MR) dampers instead of passive dampers are installed vertically between the outrigger and perimeter columns to achieve large and adaptable energy dissipation. Control performance of semi-active outrigger damper system mainly depends on the control algorithm. Fuzzy logic control algorithm was used to generate command voltage sent to MR damper. Genetic algorithm was used to optimize the fuzzy logic controller. An artificial earthquake load was generated for numerical simulation. A simplified numerical model of damped outrigger system was developed. Based on numerical analyses, it has been shown that the semi-active damped outrigger system can effectively reduce both displacement and acceleration responses of the tall building in comparison with a passive outrigger damper system.

The new rotary friction damper was developed using several two-nodal rotary frictional components with different clamping forces. Because of these components, the rotary friction damper can be activated by building movements due to lateral forces such as a wind and earthquake. In this paper, various dependency tests such as displacement amplitude, forcing frequency and long term cyclic loading were carried out to evaluate on the structural performance and the multi-slip mechanism of the new damper. Test results show that the multi-slip mechanism is verified and friction coefficients are dependent on displacement amplitute and forcing frequency except long term cyclic loading.

Compared with a strong axial rigidity due to large intial tension, cable has a weak laterally flexural rigidity. A variety of dynamic loads such as traffic loads and wind loads etc. cause the cables to vibrate significantly and affect the mechanical properties and the performance of cables. Therefore, vibration reduction design is an urgent task to control the vibration of cable-supported bridges. Because a various kind of dampers have shown to reduce the amplitude and duration time of vibration of cable from measured date in field test, damper can be considered that it is effective device significantly to reduce the amplitude and duration time in vibration of cable. Vibration characteristics of cable can change according to manufacturing method and type of established form, and damper has been designed according to distribution of natural frequencies and vibration modes. In this study, numerical analysis is used to show the reduction effects of vibrations and present the design of damper for vibration reduction of cable.

The performance enhancement of various structural building systems from natural hazards has become an inctreasingly important issue in engineering field. In this paper, visco-elastic(VE) CST30 damping systems were tested under cyclic loadings to evaluate their performance in terms of ductility and energy dissipation. Main test variables are relative shear stiffness, rate of loading frequency, and thickness of specimens to evaluate the seismic capacity based on the performance criteria. This experiment was performed using a total of 12 specimens, subjected to cyclic loadings up to a shear deformation of 500%. All the CST30 dampers provided a ductile and stable hysterestic behavior when subjected to the demands of large shear stiffness and different loading frequencies. The test results showed that the CST30 dampers are an effective damping systems to enhance the buildings performance for remodeling and retrofit of buildings

SAFE damper is a hybrid damper which is comprised of a friction damper and a metallic damper. These two dampers combine to resist external energy in stages. Under minor earthquake loads, the friction damper operates alone. However, the friction damper and metallic damper dissipate the energy together when a severe earthquake occurs. In comparison with other methods for seismic retrofitting, the SAFE damper has many advantages. The SAFE damper doesn’t cause damage to façade of the building, and the construction period can be reduced when retrofitting. This paper describes experiments evaluating the structural performance of the SAFE damper. From the results, it was found that the structural performance of a conventional RC bare frame can be significantly improved by the installation of the SAFE damper.

The general auto transmission uses the torque converter that has a good vibration damping force by launching performance and damping effect as power transfer unit. The vehicle equipped with auto transmission uses Lock up clutch system to improve the fuel efficiency. The Lock up clutch system is the major factor of the devices that increase the torque from engine to transmission in specific condition and also consist of the damper springs to transfer the torque stably. Damper spring controls the vibration of power transfer units and improve the impression of riding and durability, by being damping function on change torque from engine. In addition, not only the appearance and performance, but also these sensitive qualities as like vibration and noise can also be main factor to buy a car. Recently, in order to absorb the low vibration caused by vehicle structure vibration, the Low-stiffness damper has been on the rise. The damper spring should be considered and designed, considering the engine characteristic and direct connect of lock up clutch due to the stiffness of the spring and hysteresis has a major effects to the damper characteristic. This study can be used for analyzing the major factors to effect the NVH characteristic by evaluating the damper’s hysteresis according to change of spring stiffness.

In this study, shaking table test was carried out to evaluate the seismic behavior and performance of low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) piloti structures with and without retrofit. The specimens were designed considering the characteristics of existing building with pilotis such as natural period, distribution factor of strength and stiffness between columns and core wall on the first soft story. The test for the non-retrofit specimen showed that damage was concentrated on the stiffer member on the same floor as the core wall failed by shear fracture whereas columns experienced slight flexural cracks. Considering the failure mode of the non-retrofit specimen, the retrofit method using steel rod damper was presented for improving the seismic performance of piloti structures. The results of the test for retrofit specimen revealed that the retrofit method was effective for controlling the damage as the main RC structural members were not destroyed and most of input energy was dissipated by hysteretic behavior of the damper.
