        Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and periodontal disease are bone destructive diseases mainly caused by inflammation. Various studies are being conducted to develop treatments for inflammatory bone destructive diseases. Many of these studies involve plant-derived natural compounds. In these studies, cell differentiation, signal transduction pathways, and bone resorption were measured at the cellular level. In disease-induced animal models, the amount of inflammatory mediators or matrix destructive enzymes and serum metabolic markers were measured. This study examined the effects of plant-derived natural compounds, such as flavonoids, on inflammatory bone destructive diseases. In addition, we structurally classified various substances used to maintain bone health and summarized the biological effects and related mechanisms of the components.

        자연수계 수산생물의 전염병 모니터링은 자연수계 및 양식 수산생물의 질병 관련성 및 상관관계 구명은 질병 발생 예방 및 확산 방지에 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 2018년 해구 64개소에서 어류 39종 977마리 및 갑각류 14종 287마리를 선정하여 총 1,264마리에 대하여 병원체 감염 여부를 조사하였다. 어류는 법정전염병 2종 (VHS, RSIVD) 및 비 법정전염병 3종 (MABVD, HRVD, LCD)을 분석하고 갑각류는 법정전염병 6종 (WSD, IHHN, TS, IMN, YHD, WTD) 을 분석하였다. 조사한 모든 시료에서 전염병이 검출되지 않았지만, 우리나라에서 조사한 자연수계 수산생물이 무병하여 청정국 또는 청정지위 선언에 중요한 정보를 제공 할 것이다.

        We investigated the correlation between density of air and the infection rate of airborne microorganisms in mushroom cultivation facilities and found that the correlation was low in places where the infection rate during cultivation was less than 1%. The farms with an infection rate of 2~5% showed a high infection rate in the inoculation room in spring and summer seasons, and in the incubation room in autumn, and the farms with an infection rate of more than 6% showed infection in all the rooms regardless of the season. The farms where the Trichoderma sp. was investigated at the time of the mushroom cultivation showed the highest infection rates of 3.17%, 2.74%, and 2.64% in summer, spring, and autumn, respectively. The farms infected with Neurospora tetrasperma showed a lesser rate of infection than the ones infected with Trichoderma sp., and the highest infection rate of 0.56% was observed in summer. Based on these results, the type of infection could be classified into five groups, where type I was farms where the infection rate is less than 1% in all seasons. Three farms belonged to this type, and the infection rate in this type was lower than that in the other types.

        Heart rate is a relatively simple and non-invasive method that is used as an important physiological indicator in many studies and has a close relationship with heart structure and function, cardiovascular disease and sudden cardiac death. In general, appropriately low heart rate during resting means effective heart function and cardiovascular fitness; heart rate at recovery is an important indicator of health and disease condition. We found a beagle dog (Dog_1) with a high heart rate in the previous preliminary experiment. Therefore, purpose of this study was to compare the heart rate response of the Dog_1 with the control group during 12 weeks of interval exercise, to evaluate the structural and functional abnormalities of the heart and to verify the applicability of exercise program. Heart rate was checked during 12 weeks of interval exercise, and after the exercise was over, imaging examination and hematological and serum biochemistry were performed. As a result, Dog_1 (165.6 ± 1.5) showed significantly higher heart rate in low intensity session of interval exercise than control group (133.3 ± 0.5, p < 0.01). In addition, Dog_1 (181.2 ± 1.4) showed significantly higher heart rate than control group (155.1 ± 0.9) in high intensity session (p < 0.01). The heart rate (30 sec, 60 sec) during recovery state was higher in Dog_1 (30 sec: 156.8 ± 4.0, 60 sec: 166.8 ± 5.8) than in the control group (30 sec: 111.2 ± 2.5, 60 sec: 104.0 ± 5.1, p < 0.01). The results of the imaging examination of Dog_1 with high heart rate confirmed that the heart had no functional and structural abnormalities. All beagles with the interval exercise program did not show maladjustment, and in the hematological and serum biochemistry results, all the parameter were within the reference range. If the interval exercise program of this study is used in the future, it is expected to be used as an important basic data to achieve the purpose of health, welfare, and physical fitness improvement of dogs.

        Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, KFD) is a benign self-limiting lesion that can self-heal when no severe symptoms are present. KFD resembles tuberculous lymphadenitis and malignant lymphoma. Thus, early differential diagnosis will minimize unnecessary evaluation and treatment. Histological examination of a lymph node biopsy or fine needle aspiration could be a reliable method for KFD diagnosis. This study reports a case of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis of the right cervical lymph node in a 52-year-old female patient. According to the fine needle aspiration biopsy result, the patient was diagnosed with Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease and treated with prednisolone (15 mg/day). After treatment, there was no recurrence or adverse event.

        Herein, we compared the epidemiological aspects of pathogenic microbial foodborne disease (FBD) outbreaks in Korea and Japan from 2011 to 2015. In Korea, the cumulative incidence rate (CIR) of FBD was 12.6 per 100,000 individuals, and the patients per outbreak (P/O) was 22.1 for the period from 2011 to 2015. During the same period in Japan, the CIR was 17.4, and the P/O was 21.1. In Korea, outbreaks of FBDs were more common in summer, whereas those in Japan were more frequent in winter. In Korea, microbial agents accounted for 55.6% of all outbreaks, whereas that in Japan was 77.1% of all outbreaks. Moreover, Bacillus cereus, Clostridium spp., pathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were more common in Korea than in Japan. In summary, FBD outbreaks showed characteristic differences between Korea and Japan, reflecting differences in culture, food habits, climate, and geography between the two countries.

        In the case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), there is a great deal of impact on the national economy due to the disposal of diseases, the cost of disease control such as vaccination, reduction of productivity, and restriction of international trade of livestock products. Therefore, appropriate diagnostic methods for sensitive, accurate and rapid identification of virus serotypes are continuously required in terms of early prevention of FMD. This study was conducted to confirm the feasibility of immuno-PCR diagnostic method for the more sensitive detection of Korean FMD virus (FMDV). We synthesized a partial FMD type A viral gene. Protein antigen, monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies of FMDV were cloned, expressed and purified and then magnetic particles were attached to polyclonal antibodies and and oligomers to monoclonal antibodies for the immnuno-PCR. We confirmed the antigen-antibody and oligomer reaction using ELISA, Western blot, and real-time PCR. These results show that Korean FMDV can be detected by using difference of Ct values between positive group and negative group using immuno-PCR.. The results of this study also suggest that this technique will be the basis of the diagnosis method to detect Korean FMDV more sensitively in the future.

        Oligossaccharides have beneficial effects on the immune system, atopy and skin health according to the prebiotic effect on intestinal microflora. Due to the excellent physiological functions of these oligosaccharides, the demand for prebiotics is rapidly increasing in the world. In this review, it has been shown that galactooligosaccharide( GOS) intake improves skin health and atopic eczema and fructooligosaccharide( FOS) prevent atopic dermatitis in human clinical trials. These results indicate that oligosaccharides are sufficiently applicable as a functional food for improving skin health and skin diseases.

        본 연구는 심뇌혈관질환 예방프로그램이 지역사회 노인의 심혈관 위험요인과 삶의 질에 미치는 효과를 확인하고자 실시하였다. 유사실험설계의 비동등성 대조군 전후설계를 이용하였다. 연구대상자는 지역사회 노인으로 실험군 22명, 대조군 22명 총 44명을 편의표집하였고, 심뇌혈관질환 예방프로그램을 제 공하고 심혈관 위험요인과 삶의 질을 측정하였다. 심뇌혈관 예방프로그램에 참여한 실험군은 대조군에 비해 심혈관 위험요인인 수축기 혈압(t=-2.419, p= .020), 이완기 혈압(t=-2.226, p= .031), 혈당(t=-2.071, p= .045)이 유의하게 감소하였고 삶의 질은 향상되었다(t=2.511, p= .016). 그러나 총콜레스테롤과 고밀도 지단백콜레스테롤은 유의한 변화가 없었다. 이에 심뇌혈관질환 예방프로그램이 지역사회 노인의 심혈관 위험요인 감소와 삶의 질 향상에 효과적임을 확인할 수 있었다.

        Sacbrood virus (SBV) caused significant colony collapse in Korean Apis cerana. Considering that hygienic behavior in honey bees confers colony-level resistance against brood diseases, we utilized this trait for selecting A. cerana colonies. In addition, the brood survival rate was evaluated after colonies were SBV-inoculated. Over four selective generations, dead brood removal and brood survivorship in selected colonies were higher than those in the unselected colonies (P < 0.01, 99.3 vs. 89.9% for removal of pin-killed pupae; P < 0.01, 99.0 vs. 63.9% for removal of SBV-killed larvae; and P < 0.01, 70.0 vs. 9.2% for brood survivorship). Following SBV-inoculation, selected colonies showed an increase in the number of surviving pupae and adults, whereas unselected colonies collapsed mostly. Our results confirm the feasibility of selecting SBV-resistant A. cerana.

        모기는 말라리아, 황열, 뎅기열, 웨스트나일열, 사상충, 치쿤구냐, 일본뇌염, 지카 등의 여러 질병을 매개하고 있고 자연적 요인과 인위적 요인에 의한 지구의 기후변화는 이들 병원성 매개모기들이 점점 더 번성하게 만드는 요인이 되고 있다. 현재 우리나라에서 주목해야 될 감염성 매개질병으로 말라리아와 뎅기열은 기후변화에 의한 기온 상승 요인으로 매개모기의 분포지역 확대와 함께 교통수단의 발달 및 국가 간 빈번한 교류에 의해서 유럽을 비롯한 오세아니아, 동아시아의 온대 지역에서도 감염자의 발생빈도 수가 최근 지속적으로 증가 추세를 보이고 있다. 따라서 기후변화 요인과 인간 활동 등에 의한 요인으로 감염 지역과 매개모기 분포가 미래 예측 불확실성과 복잡성을 가지고 있지만 국내 침입을 막기 위한 해외 유입 방지에 대한 지속적인 모니터링과 방제뿐만 아니라 국가 간 방제 프로그램 공조를 통한 모기에 의해 매개되는 질병 확산에 대비하는 것이 중요할 것으로 생각된다.

        미세방울 디지털 PCR(Droplet digital PCR, ddPCR) 법은 정량 PCR 법과 같이 형광물질을 사용하여 정량분석이 가능하다는 점은 유사하지만, PCR 반응액을 만든 후 이 반응액을 바로 PCR에 사용하지 않고 수 만 개의 동일한 크기의 미세방울(droplet)로 구획(partitioning)한 후에 PCR 반응을 수행하는 점이 기존의 PCR 법과 가장 큰 차이라고 볼 수 있다. 이렇게 구획된 나노리터 크기의 미세방울 중에서 형광신호가 검출되는 미세방울과 검출되지 않은 미세방울의 수를 계수하여 프아송 분포(Poisson distribution) 계산에 적용하면 표준검량선 없이 목적 유전자의 절대정량 분석이 가능하다. 곤충이 매개하는 질병 바이러스의 경우 소량의 바이러스 감염 여부를 확인하기 위해서 다수의 곤충 유전자를 확인해야 하는데, 이와 같이 미세방울 형태의 ddPCR을 이용하면 기존 Real-time PCR 법에 비해 극소량의 목적 유전자를 높은 민감도로 검출할 수 있으며, PCR 저해요소(inhibitor)에도 큰 영향을 받지 않는다는 장점이 있다. 또한 미세방울 방식의 디지털 PCR을 이용하면 다중 PCR 분석이 가능하여 1개의 시료에서 다양한 질병매개 바이러스를 검출할 수 있다.

        A gram-positive bacterium was isolated from the spent substrate of Agaricus bisporus that showed a marked antagonistic activity against Pseudomonas agarici. It was identified as Bacillus safensis HC42 based on its cultural, biochemical, and physiological characteristics, and 16S rRNA sequence. B. safensis HC42 was saprophytic, but not parasitic or pathogenic, in cultivated mushrooms and showed strong inhibition of P. agarici in vitro. Moreover, it showed a control efficacy of 66 % against browning disease caused by P. agarici in Agaricus bisporus. Therefore, B. safensis HC42 may be useful in the future for the development of a biocontrol system.
