        PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the road design elements affecting the lateral driving safety under high-speed driving conditions with a speed limit of 140 km/h and to derive useful implications to design of safer roads. METHODS : A full-scale driving simulator was used to evaluate the various design scenarios. Different regression techniques and a random forest method were adopted to conduct comprehensive comparisons among the simulation scenarios. The relationships between the safety indicators, including the frequency of the lane departures and the standard deviation of the lateral acceleration, and the design elements were explored in terms of lateral driving safety. RESULTS : The length of the combined alignment was found to be a significant factor affecting the lateral driving safety based on the analysis of the frequency of lane departures. Regarding the standard deviation of the lateral acceleration, it was identified that the length of the horizontal curve, the length of the bridge, and the right-side superelevation must be considered significant factors associated with driving safety while designing the road under high-speed driving conditions. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the findings of this study, a set of recommendations for designing roads was proposed. For example, the proper length of the combined alignment and the horizontal curve should be determined to prevent crashes due to hazardous lateral driving events because the installation of sufficient superelevation in the bridge section would be limited under high-speed driving conditions. In addition, applying a larger horizontal curve radius with longitudinal grooving is a promising approach to tackle risky driving conditions.

        This study aims to investigate how multicultural aspects are dealt with in current elementary English textbooks. The cover pages, dialogues, main readings, and culture sections of a total of 10 elementary English textbooks for 5th and 6th graders were closely examined in terms of (1) the races and genders of the characters, (2) the cultural backgrounds of the contents, and (3) Bennett’s (2010) core values of multicultural education. The results revealed that each gender was equally represented and the textbooks present diverse cultural backgrounds in a balanced way. It was found, however, that there was an imbalance in terms of racial backgrounds. With respect to the core values of multicultural education, acceptance and appreciation of cultural diversity, and respect for human dignity and universal human rights were the top two values that appeared most frequently throughout the textbooks. Responsibility to a world community was the value that was comparatively hard to find in them. Detailed findings are discussed in greater depth, along with implications for elementary English education in Korea.

        The purpose of this paper is to understand the key factors for efficient maintenance of rapidly aging facilities. Therefore, the safety inspection/diagnosis reports accumulated in the unstructured data were collected and preprocessed. Then, the analysis was performed using a text mining analysis method. The derived vulnerabilities of tunnel facilities can be used as elements of inspections that take into account the characteristics of individual facilities during regular inspections and daily inspections in the short term. In addition, if detailed specification information and other inspection results(safety, durability, and ease of use) are used for analysis, it provides a stepping stone for supporting preemptive maintenance decision-making in the long term.

        본 연구는 스마트 자율운항선박(Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship, MASS) 기술 개발 및 실증을 위한 산학 과제로서 목포해양 대학교와 삼성중공업이 함께 참여한 연구가 안전하게 실시되어 질수 있도록 안전관리 절차서를 개발하였다. 본 연구에서는 국내 및 국 제해사기구(International Maritime Organization, IMO)의 관련 가이드라인 및 해사 관련법 검토를 거쳐 안전관리 절차서를 개발하였다. 안전관리 절차서는 자율운항선박의 관련 해당 당국과 이해관계자들이 시스템 및 기반 시설에서 시험의 안전 및 환경 보호와 관련하여 적절하게 실시하기 위하여 국제해사기구에서 제시한 자율운항선박 시험을 위한 지침(MSC.1/Circ.1604, Annex : Interim guidelines for MASS trials)의 의거하여 개발 하였다. 개발된 안전관리 절차서는 당직체제로 운항 중인 선박에 항해보조기기로 탑재한 자율운항요소기술을 적용한 시스템의 해상 실증 시험을 위하여, 대한민국 연안의 해양환경보호와 항행 안전을 준수하면서, 관련 시스템의 시험이 안전하고 안정적으로 수행할 수 있도록 개발되었다.

        PURPOSES : This study prioritizes the potential technology for establishing an efficient traffic control in the ramp junction of urban deep underground tunnels in the future. We considered most of the applicable technologies that ensure traffic safety at the on-off ramp junction. METHODS : This study proposes a methodology to prioritize the applicable technology for establishing efficient traffic control in the ramp junction of an urban deep underground tunnel using an analytical hierarchy process (AHP). First, an AHP structure was developed. Second, an individual survey was conducted to collect the opinions of road and transportation experts. Based on the survey results, weights were estimated depending on the relevant criteria of the developed structure. The estimated weights were verified using the consistency index (CI) and consistency ratio (CR). In addition, a sensitivity analysis was performed to confirm the reliability of the estimated weights. Finally, the potential technology for an efficient traffic control in the ramp junction of an urban deep underground tunnel was prioritized. RESULTS : In the first level of hierarchy, traffic demand control had the highest priority, and ramp metering, section speed control, and shoulder lane control were selected in the second level of hierarchy. CONCLUSIONS : These results implied that prioritizing would be useful in establishing traffic operation strategies for traffic safety when constructing and opening deep underground tunnels in urban areas in the future.

        The degree and intensity of unpleasant and disgusting odors perceived through a person's sense of smell can vary depending on personal or social and cultural characteristics. In addition, it is not effective to manage odors solely on the basis of concentration levels because odors can be combined according to temperature, humidity, and frequency, so that they can be recognized differently even if the same person smells the same substance. The mobile odor application was developed to enable real time monitoring of odor characteristics reflecting the actual condition of the field. Accordingly, the Green Future Foundation, a civic group, conducted an environmental campaign to record and share the information of odors in school zone using the first version of the application. The real time monitoring of field odor was able to improve the problems of the current standard methods for the examination and assessment of odors. However, with regard to the first version of the application, the process and results of odor recording through odor measurement applied the direct olfactory method and were less relevant. Therefore, it was difficult to organize data due to duplicate selection. For that reason, this study was conducted to overcome the problems of the first version of the mobile application and to effectively and accurately reflect odors and personal characteristics. This odor application that has been developed is able to monitor and assess odors based on 5 features: classification, character, strength level, hedonic tone, and acceptability.

        『오즈의 위대한 마법사』는 다양한 억압으로부터의 해방과 자유에 대한 이야기이며, 이 작품의 해방 양상은 기독교 해방 서사의 원형이자 히브리인들의 이집트 해방기인 「출애굽기」의 특징과 유사하다. 히브리 민족의 지도자였던 모세와 『오즈의 위대한 마법사』의 주인공 도로시는 서로 다른 배경적 특징에도 불구하고, 공통된 중요한 역할을 수행하는데, 이는 다양한 차원의 억압으로부터 고통받는 타자를 해방한다는 점이다. 이 작품에서 악(惡)은 다름 아닌 타자를 노예로 삼고 지배하고 착취하는 욕구와 행동이며, 이에 맞서는 주인공 도로시의 역할은 오즈 나라에서의 모험 여정 동안 다양한 인물들을 개인적으로 또 집단으로 ‘속박’에서 해방하는 것이다. 이 해방의 양상은 크게 물리적·정치적 억압으로부터의 해방, 내재화된 고정관념으로부터의 해방, 자기 속임수와 거짓 정체성으로부터의 해방의 특징을 보이며, 이 세 가지 해방의 통합을 통해 자신의 고유한 역할을 찾는 것이 자유이다. 이런 특징은 히브리인들이 이집트로부터의 물리적 해방 후에 광야에서의 정신적 정화의 과정을 거치면서 신 앞에 자신들의 참된 정체성을 인식해가는 『출애굽기』의 해방 여정과 맥을 같이 한다.

        In this paper, nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted based on the experimental results on buckling restrained brace. The reliability of the analytical model was verified by comparing the results of experimental studies with hysteresis loop, bi-linear curve, cumulative energy dissipation capacity, and equivalent viscous damping. A valid finite element model has been secured and will be used as basic data for finite element analysis of buckling restrained braces in the future.

        This study develops finite element models for seismically-deficient reinforced concrete building frame retrofitted using fiber-reinforced polymer jacketing system and validates the finite element models with full-scale dynamic test for as-built and retrofitted conditions. The bond-slip effects measured from a past experimental study were modeled using one-dimensional slide line model, and the bond-slip models were implemented to the finite element models. The finite element model can predict story displacement and inter-story drift ratio with slight simulation variation compared to the measured responses from the full-scale dynamic tests.

        In this study, the seismic safety of nuclear power plant structures is evaluated and verified by performing a vibration test on a relatively simple shear wall structure. The shear walls are the prominent members of nuclear power plants and resist the seismic load. The shear wall structure is designed and manufactured to perform shaking table tests and is used to increase the accuracy of the analytical method by comparing them with the numerical analysis results. Different results will be checked and more efficient application methods will be studied depending on the method of designing reinforced concrete structures.

        대표적인 연성변형구조인 습곡에서 습곡축의 자세는 3차원 습곡구조의 발달양상뿐만 아니라 변형 당시의 최대 수평주응력 방향에 대한 정보를 수집하는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 이러한 이유로 습곡축의 자세를 파악하는 것은 매우 중요하나 습곡축이 노출되는 경우가 흔하지 않기 때문에 습곡과 관련된 구조요소들을 이용한 다양한 방법들이 제시되고 이용되어 왔다. 따라서 이러한 다양한 측정방법에 대해 간략히 소개하고, 이들 방법들에 대한 신뢰성을 평가하기 위하여 같은 습곡에 대해 다른 측정법을 사용하여 측정한 습곡축들을 비교분석 하였다. 이를 위해 습곡구조가 잘 발달해 있는 충북 단양지역 조선누층군의 석회암층들과 평안누층군의 만항층에 걸쳐 6곳의 노두에서 습곡구조의 습곡축 자세를 측정하고 비교하였다. 비교결과 다른 방법에 의해 측정된 것들도 대부분 서로 잘 일치하는 양상을 보여 다양한 측정방법들의 실제 활용이 가능함을 보여주었다. 또한 단양지역의 습곡구조는 서북서 방향의 습곡축을 가지는 한 곳을 제외한 나머지 노두에서 모두 북-북북동 내지 북동 방향의 습곡축을 보였으며, 이는 서북서-동남동 내지 북서-남동 방향 의 최대수평주응력 환경에서 만들어진 습곡들로 판단된다. 서북서 방향의 습곡축은 다른 시기의 습곡작용을 지시하는 것으로 보이며, 북-북북동 방향의 습곡축을 가지는 습곡구조와 북동 방향의 습곡축을 가지는 습곡구조 사이의 주향 차이는 하나의 습곡작용에서 습곡구조의 규모에 따라 다소 차이가 생긴 것으로 해석하였으나, 증거를 확인하는 추가적인 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

        PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to derive specific road design elements for safe urban underground and to adopt measures for minimizing traffic delays and to maintain efficient operation. METHODS : In this study, a qualitative study was conducted using Focus Group Interview (FGI) method to identify significant connection characteristics and develop connections to urban underground roads. Finally, this study analyzes design elements necessary for traffic safety and efficient traffic operation. In addition, relevant case studies were performed with keywords from the FGI method results. Therefore, major design elements were analyzed for urban underground road connection and connection analysis for traffic simulation-based verification. RESULTS : The main characteristics of the connection between the underground roads of the downtown area were divided into three types: traffic flow characteristics, geometric characteristics, and driver behavioral characteristics. From the review of 16 leading studies (10 domestic papers and 6 international papers) according to the characteristics, the main design factors for “traffic flow characteristics” include the traffic volume, design speed, heavy vehicle ratio, and lane change. The important design elements for “geometric characteristics” include the separation distance, number of lanes, slope, lane and shoulder width and the design factors for “driver behavioral characteristics” showed reaction time, driver vision, and driving speed. CONCLUSIONS : The FGI method identified the main characteristics of connections to the underground roads. In addition, the relevant empirical and theoretical research data were considered in case studies, and the design elements were derived and separated spatially based on the features of each design element, establishing a point-specific design element guideline.

        PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to establish design criteria for right-turning lanes by analyzing the relationship between the speed and geometry of right-turning lanes in urban areas. METHODS : A right-turn vehicle with a traffic island was surveyed for 32 geometries and 4,012 vehicles. Using multiple regression, we developed a running speed prediction model based on the running speed characteristics and geometry scale. RESULTS : According to the analysis of the running speed of the right-turning channel, the 85th speed was 34.5-38.3 km/h, depending on the right-turning lane radius, and 32.4-39.0 km/h, depending on the channel width group. Based on the multi-regression, the right-turning radius and the channel width variables were statistically significant because of the influencing factors of the road speed. Two independent variables were positive (+) coefficients. CONCLUSIONS : In this study, we investigated the running speed state on the right-turning channel and the factors that influenced the running speed. In addition, the relationship between the running speed and other factors was modeled through statistical analysis, and a running speed prediction model was established. It was observed that the driving speed increased as the geometry scale increased. Based on the derived running speed model, the maximum design criteria for limiting the speed of the conductive channelized right-turning lane in urban areas were established.
