For Korean language learners, communication activities are an opportunity to actually apply their knowledge of the language to real life. The communication strategies used in this case vary according to situations and purposes. To examine the types of communication strategies used in each situation, this study analyzed the utterances of participants in speaking tests, counseling, and private conversations. It was found that communication strategies were used most frequently in private conversations, followed by counseling and speaking tests. As to purposes, communication strategies were used to resolve defects in target language resources, issues in self-utterances, and issues in the utterances of the other party of conversation. Furthermore, this study discovered that Arabic-speaking learners notably use communication strategies not only for the purpose of resolving communication issues, but also for the relationship-oriented purpose of building a social tie.

Lee Jin-sung. 2013. Writing Practice of English Chatting Language and its Different Communication Strategies from That of Korean. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 21(3). The purpose of this study is to introduce writing practice of English chatting language, especially focusing on that of text messages. It also discusses different communication strategies of English chatting language from that of Korean. The two characteristic features of text message writing are presented as a violation of conventional writing practice and various manners of shorthand writings. As for shorthand writings, initialisms, vowel omission, clippings, ideograms, pictograms, and phonetic spellings are dealt, together with their functional perspectives. The communication strategies of English chatting language were found to be reflected only on various shorthand writing practice which depicts the degree of formality but manifests lack of articulating detailed emotion or conversational keys. The communication strategies of Korean chatting language, on the other hand, were found to be able to demonstrate various conversational keys with the help of novel inflectional mutation, shortening, syllable extension, consonant addition or with adoption of regional dialects. While English chatting language is associated with positive influence on literacy, vocabulary, and phonological awareness among children as well as adults, Korean chatting language seems to have somewhat negative influence on standard written language and orthography. Lee, Kil-yong․Son, Min-su. 2012. The development process of Communication Strategies in Japanese by korean learners. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 20(1). pp. 161-176. In this study, focused on the first language-based strategies and the target language-based strategies about the development of communication strategies in Japanese by three korean learners were investigated. The results are summarized as follows. First, as target language proficiency increases, the frequency of the first language-based strategies and the target language-based strategies generally tended to decrease. However, the case of the beginning level learner, as learning progresses, the frequency of the target language-based strategies increased. Second, as target language proficiency increases, the frequency of the first language-based strategies generally tended to decrease. However, as chaotic-period of the first language and the target language, the intermediate-level learners increased the frequency of the first language based-strategies. Third, as target language proficiency increases, the frequency of problem-solving strategy of the sentence unit increased than problem-solving strategy of unit vocabulary. This study will have important implications to say that by analyzing the longitudinal data of three cross-cutting learners of differing proficiency target language, we attempted to elucidate the developmental processes of communication strategies.

Han, Sang-Ho. 1997. A Model of English Instruction Based on Communication Strategies. Studies in Modern Grammatical Theories 10: 149-171. The purpose of this paper is to identify developmental stages of communication strategies displayed by basic learners of English. For this purpose two groups of ESL learners and a group of EFL learners were observed and videotaped for 9 months respectively. Through an analysis of transcribed data, it was found that communication strategies develop in a relatively invariant order: avoidance, paralinguistic, code-switching, reduction, and paraphrasing strategies. Based on the result of the study an effective instructional model is suggested for Korean learners of English.
