        Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most prevalent malignant tumor originating from the salivary gland. The gradation of MEC is determined histologically based on cellular composition, with high-grade MEC presenting with distinct characteristics and clinical implications. A 56-year-old male presented with a 3-month history of right facial swelling and a recent onset of pain. A subsequent biopsy confirmed a malignant epithelial tumor, with further imaging assisting in determining the surgical approach. Comprehensive surgery, involving the removal of the right submandibular gland and reconstructive procedures, was undertaken. Histopathological evaluation post-surgery confirmed a high-grade MEC. The differentiation between inflammatory conditions and neoplastic lesions in the orofacial region can be challenging. The gradation of MEC is important in guiding therapeutic decisions. Among various classification systems, the Brandwein system offers detailed histopathological criteria that correlate reliably with clinical features. High-grade MECs, although less frequent, are aggressive and have a lower 5-year survival rate. Accurate histopathological diagnosis is crucial in devising an effective treatment plan. The presented case underlines the importance of a meticulous yet periodic follow-up, considering the aggressive nature of high-grade MECs.

        Taxillus yadoriki (Siebold) Dancer is a parasitic plant that grows on camellia trees and is common on Jeju Island. The branches of T. yadoriki have long been used to treat various diseases, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, viral infections, and arthritis. Although recent studies reported that T. yadoriki has anticancer effects in various human cancer cell lines, including lung cancer, the exact molecular mechanisms supporting its anticancer effects are not well understood. This study aims to assess the anticancer effect of the methanol extract of T. yadoriki branches (METY) on mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) cell lines (MC3 cells and YD15 cells) and explore its mechanism of action. Inhibitory activity of MEC cell proliferation was assessed using the CCK-8 assay. The mechanism of the anticancer effect on METY-treated MC3 cells and YD15 cells was evaluated with Hoechst 33342 stain and Western blot. After treating MC3 cells and YD15 cells with METY for 48 hours, the cytotoxicity of MC3 and YD15 cells increased, and nuclear fragmentation increased in both METY-treated MEC cells. Caspase-3 and cleaved PARP activation demonstrated apoptosis of METY-treated MEC cells. Cell proliferation inhibition with METY was alleviated in METY-treated MEC cells pretreated with zVAD-FMK, supporting the cell proliferation inhibition effect by apoptosis. METY-induced apoptosis in MEC cells occurs through MAP kinase pathways such as p38 and pAkt. MEC cell. METY-induced apoptosis of MEC cells occurs via the p38 and pAkt MAPK pathways. Therefore, METY may be a promising anticancer candidate for the MEC therapeutic strategy.

        Background : Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common primary epithelial malignant salivary gland tumor in both adults and children. Histological grading of MEC is subjective, but plays an important role in predicting patient prognosis. Immunohistochemistry can accurately diagnose diseases and help with treatment and prognosis. The review of this paper was intended to be helpful in the differential diagnosis of mucinous epidermoid carcinoma. Methods : A PubMed search was carried out. Well-known biomarkers for mucoepidermoid carcinoma were searched in PubMed, and their differences with oral squamous cell carcinoma were compared. Results : When PubMed searched “oral mucoepidermoid carcinoma, biomarker”, a total of 241 papers were found, among which cytokeratin(22), Muc1(membrane-bound mucin1, 9), Muc4( membrane-bound mucin4, 6), Muc5ac (membrane-bound mucin5ac, 4), Muc5b (membrane-bound mucin5b, 3), p63 (15), PCNA (15), p53 (20), EGFR (Epidermal growth factor receptor, 21), c-erbB2 (HER2, 14), and pAKT (2) were searched and investigated. The biomarkers retrieved above were compared with those expressed in squamous cell carcinoma. Conclusion : Due to the above biomarkers, it is possible to classify mucoepidermoid carcinoma and differentiate it from other salivary gland tumors or oral squamous cell carcinoma.

        Although fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) has been widely accepted as a valuable tool for differential diagnosis of head and neck tumors, the diagnostic value of FNAB in the management of salivary gland tumors has been questioned. This case report presents a patient with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of parotid gland diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma by FNAB and discusses the pitfalls in the diagnosis of malignant salivary gland tumors.

        Mucoepidermoid carcinoma(MEC) is the most common salivary gland malignancies. As its name implies, the MEC is composed of a mixture of mucus-secreting cells and epidermoid cells. Histologically, MECs have been categorized into one of three grades : low, intermediate, or high grade. Although the MEC is the most common salivary gland tumor in both adults and children, MEC of sublingual gland accounts for only 1% of epithelial salivary tumors. This case report presents the histopathological features and management of MEC of the sublingual gland.

        Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign salivary gland tumor. Being pleomorphic, its histologic characteristics can be considerably varied, showing epithelial (ductal and non-ductal) cells and mesenchyme-like tissues (chondroid, myxoid, and osseous). Here, we present a rare case of a 76-year-old female presenting with a 2.0 cm PA with an epidermoid cyst of minor salivary glands on the soft palate.

        Natural products are vastly utilized as a source of chemotherapeutic agents for human cancers. Kochia scopraia is traditionally used for the cure of urological and dermatological diseases. Recently, methanol extract of Kochia scoparia (MEKS) has been shown to have anti-cancer activity to various human cancers. However, there is no report demonstrating the anti-cancer activity of MEKS in human mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) cells. In this study, the authors studied the effects of MEKS on the cell proliferation and underlying mechanism in YD15 human MEC cells. MEKS decreased YD15 cell proliferation proven by trypan blue exclusion assay and induced apoptosis, evidenced by cell cycle analysis and western blotting. Autophagy induction by MEKS was verified by western blotting. In addition, MEKS regulated the expression of phosphorylated Akt, phosphorylated p38 and Nrf2 protein. This results can imply that MEKS might be a potential candidate for the treatment of human MEC cells.

        복숭아씨살이좀벌(Eurytoma maslovskii)은 매실, 살구, 복숭아 등 핵과류 종자를 가해하는 해충으로 과실품질을 저하시켜 큰 경제적 손실을 야기하고 있다. 이 해충의 효과적인 예찰과 방제를 위해 성페로몬의 동정이 시급한 실정이다. 유사종인 Eurytoma amygdali는 유럽과 중동에서 아몬드 종자를 가해하는 해충인데, 이 종에서는 암컷의 표피 탄화수소가 수컷 성충을 유인하는 성페로몬인 것으로 보고되었다. 유사종의 화학생태 정보에 기초하여, 우리는 복숭아씨살이좀벌 암컷에만 존재하는 표피 탄화수소 4가지를 동정한 후 합성하여 수컷 포획을 시도하였으나 실패하였 다. 더욱이 암컷 추출물을 극성이 다른 용매로 분획(fractionation)하여 야외에서 생물검정을 실시한 결과, 수컷은 표피 탄화수소가 포함된 비극성 용매(hexane) 분획에는 전혀 유인되지 않았던 반면, 극성 용매(diethyl ether) 분획에만 유인되었다. 이것은 다른 벌목(Hymenoptera)에서 알려진 사실과 달리 표피 탄화수소는 복숭아씨살이좀벌의 성페로몬 이 아니며 진짜 페로몬은 극성 용매로 분리되는 물질임을 암시한다.

        Background: Cisplatin is a well-known platinum-containing anti-cancer drug against bladder, ovarian, lung and testicular cancer. However, the potential effects and molecular targets of cisplatin in human mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) are not fully understood. Here, we investigated the apoptotic effect and underlying mechanism of cisplatin in human MEC cells. Methods: The potential effects of cisplatin were evaluated by trypan blue exclusion assay, Western blotting, 4’-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining, live/dead assay and immunocytochemistry. Results: Cisplatin suppressed cell growth and enhanced expression of cleaved PAPR in MC3 and YD15 cells. Cisplatin caused morphological change of nuclei and increased the number of ethidium homodimer-1-stained cells. In addition, cisplatin commonly increased Bax activation in both cells, while other Bcl-2 family proteins were not affected. Conclusions: These results suggest that cisplatin might induce apoptosis by activating Bax protein, which would provide baseline data for development of effective treatment strategy against MEC.

        본 연구는 AVG처리가 ‘홍로’사과 표피의 지질물질 변화량에 미치는 영향을 구명하고자 실시하였다. 수확 후 상온에서 저장한 ‘홍로’사과의 내생 에틸렌 농도는 220 mg • L−1 AVG처리구는 무처리구와 200 mL • L−1 Ethephon처리구에 비해 현저히 낮은 수준을 보였으며, 같은 기간 지질물질 발생량도 다른 처리구보다 낮은 수준을 유지하였다. 따라서 수확 2주전 220 mg • L−1 AVG처리는 내생 에틸렌 농도를 낮추어 과실의 노화를 지연시킬 뿐만 아니라 과실 표피의 지질물질 축적도 줄여줌으로써 상온유통이 되는 ‘홍로’ 사과의 과실품질 향상 및 유지에 효과적이다.

        Lysyl oxidase (LOX) family, the copper dependent amine oxidase, oxidizes lysine residues in extracellular collagen and elastin. LOX increases the strength of the extracellular matrix and plays an important role in tumor development and metastasis. It has been reported that increased LOX protein and RNA are found in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Moreover some studies regarded LOX as a prognostic marker of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. However there has not been any report on LOX expression of salivary gland tumors. Here, we investigated LOX expression in mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of salivary gland and compare it to those of pleomorphic adenoma (PA). We evaluated LOX expression in eighteen MEC, eighteen ACC and twenty PA cases by immunohistochemical examination. Whereas PA showed relatively low density of LOX expression, ACC revealed more cases that showing high staining intensities for LOX. Significantly increased LOX expression was found in the cases of ACC when compared to those of PA (P = 0.010).

        Background. Vitamin K (VK) is a fat-soluble vitamin and is known to have anticancer activity in various cancer cell lines. However, there is no report on the anticancer effect of VK2 in mucoepidermoid carcinoma cells. Methods. The effects of VK2 on anti-proliferative and apoptotic activity were recognized by the trypan blue exclusion assay, 4'-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining and Western blot analysis. Results. The results showed that VK2 decreased cell viability and induced apoptotic programmed cell death in MC3 cells evidenced by the cleavages of caspase3 and PARP. VK2 treatment clearly increased Bak and truncated Bid (t-Bid) compared with the control treatment whereas it did not alter other Bcl-2 family members. Conclusions. Overall, our results suggest that VK2 can be a good apoptotic inducer accompanied by the increase in Bak and Bid protein. VK2 may be a potent target of anticancer drug candidate for the treatment of oral cancer.

        Mucoepidermoid carcinoma, a malignant neoplasm of salivary gland, rarely arises within the jaws. Differential diagnosis should include an odontogenic cyst because the central mucoepidermoid carcinoma usually reveals either an unilocular or multilocular radiolucency with hyperostotic border. Long-term follow-up is needed due to late recurrence and clinical slow progress like other salivary gland tumors. We would like to report an unusual case of central mucoepidermoid carcinoma with a review of literature.

        Dermoid and epidermoid cysts in the oral cavity are uncommon and account for less than 0.01% of all oral cysts. The large majority of cases arise in the floor of the mouth and there are rare in other sites. We would like to report an unusual case of epidermoid cyst at the buccal mucosa in a 66-year-old male with a review of literature.

        Aliphatic cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) of different developmental stages of the spot clothing wax cicada, Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) were analyzed using GC and GC-MS. The numbers of carbons in the major CHCs of each developmental stage 32, 33, 28, 38, 37 in the egg, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ins tar nymphal stages, and adults, respectively. The cuticle of Lycorma delicatula contains mainly methyl-branched 9-methylheptacosane (15.11%) in the egg stage, and a high proportion of n-heptacosane in nymphal stages (15.75, 22.42, 25.04, and 23.11 % in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instars, respectively). In contrast, male and female adults had high proportions of n-nonacosane (13.42 and 16.55%). The chemical constituents of CHCs were classified into five groups (n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes, trimethylalkanes, olefins) and group profiles of each developmental stage were compared. Egg surface was composed mainly monomethylalkanes (45.39%), a saturated hydrocar-bon. Nymph CHCs consisted primarily of n-alkanes (37.63 to 46.12%). There was a difference between adult male and female CHCs_ However, both contained n-alkanes and monomethylalkanes. CHCs with trimethyl or double bonded structure were rare in all stages.

        본 연구는 품질증진제 처리가 산취(Chamaecereus silvestrii) '희망'의 모구품질과 표피 변화에 미치는 영향을 연구하였다. 생체중은 D-sorbitol 처리구보다 D-mannitol 처리구에서 감소율이 낮아 효과적이었다. Diniconazole 200ppm처리는 산취의 자구생육을 어느 정도(수치화) 억제하여 장기수송(50일)에 더 적합하였으며 자구색의 발현 어느 정도(수치화)에도 효과적이었다. 산취 모구의 표피구조는 비모란에 비해 하피 발달이 저조하고 어느 정도(수치화) 단층이며 세포벽도 얇아 어느 정도(수치화) 수송조건에 불리하였는데 생육의 억제효과가 높은 diniconazole 200ppm + D-mannitol 10,000ppm과 발색효과가 좋은 diniconazole 200ppm + wax 살포가 저장 중의 품질 유지에 적합하다고 판단된다.

        Emodin is a bioactive compound isolated from the root and rhizomes of Rheum plamatum L. (polygenaceae), which is known as a traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. In the present study, the effect of emodin on YD-15 mucoepidermoid carcinoma cells and its molecular mechanism were investigated. This study shows that emodin significantly inhibits the growth of YD-15 cells. Activation of caspase-3 and PARP is triggered by emodin and it increases sub-G1 population and the number of YD-15 cells with nuclear condensation and fragmentation. In addition, we found that emodin significantly decreases myeloid cell leukemia 1(MCL-1). These results suggest that MCl-1 is an important molecule for emodin-induced apoptosis. Taken together, emodin inhibits cell viability and induces apoptosis via down-regulation of MCL-1 and it can be a new potent anticancer drug candidate for the treatment of mucoepidermoid carcinoma

        Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) of the pine sawyer (Monochamus saltuarius), Japanese pine sawyer (M. alternatus) and oak longicorn beetle (Moechotypa diphysis) were analyzed by GC, GC-MS and compared. Monochamus beetles are typical vectors of pine wilt disease but Moechotypa diphysis, which belongs to the same family, is not. They possess different CHCs in carbon number: 23-25 in M. saltuarius, 25-32 in M. alternatus, and 23-29 in M. diphysis. In comparison to inter-species, these three species of adult beetles have different numbers and chains of constituents of CHCs. In comparison between male and female in intra-species, the quantities of CHCs show the difference but constituents are not. Major constituent of M. saltuarius were analyzed as n-pentacosane > n-nonacosane > n-heptacosane, those of M. alternatus were n-nonacosene > n-pentacosane > n-nonacosane, and those of M. diphysis were n-heptacosane > 13-methylheptacosane > 3-methylheptacosane. From the body surface, most saturated carbohydrates of 3 species beetles are composed of n-alkane (40.2 - 65.7%) and followed by olefines > monomethylalkanes that one or two double bonds in M. saltuarius and M. alternatus. Otherwise, M. diphysis have the difference in order of monomethylalkanes > olefins.
