        In this study, a researcher transcribed Korean negation sentences presented on four episodes of the [Love of 7.7 Billion] and analyzed the discourses of foreign panel members by focusing on Korean negation sentences. The aims of this study are to (1) analyze types and accuracy of Korean negation sentences in foreign panel members’ discourse and (2) present pedagogical implications for efficient Korean education on negation sentences. This study was launched as an attempt to analyze how correctly and variously foreign panel members in the program use Korean negation sentences in their discourse. Since discourse is closely related to the ordinary life of humans, discourses which appeared on the [Love of 7.7 Billion] would be suitable data to analyze since it is a discussion-based program. Therefore, discourse is useful from a pedagogical standpoint to look into the Korean language proficiency of them. Through discourse analysis, several implications were found. (1) foreign panels tended to use short negation sentences rather than long negation sentences; (2) panels’ use of Korean negation sentences was not various; (3) panels divided Korean negation sentences into often-used negation sentences and rarely-used negation sentences; (4) the use of negative polarity was not found that much.

        본 연구의 목적은 초급 한국어 교실 담화에서 교사가 사용하는 유형별 맞장구 양상을 살펴보는 것이다. 연구 내용을 정리하면 첫째, 교실 담화 속 교사의 언어적 맞장구를 담화표지(기본형, 긍정형, 전환형), 반복 및 대용표현(반복형, 대용형), 감정표현(놀람형, 아쉬움형, 기쁨형, 실망형)으로 나눈 후 사용 빈도와 기능을 알아보았다. 둘째, 가장 자주 사용된 것은 기본형과 반복형이었다. 기본형은 하강조의 ‘아’, ‘어’, ‘음’ 등으로 학습자의 선행 발화에 대한 경청과 동의를 표현했고 반복형은 상승조일 때는 학습자의 발화에 오류가 있음을, 하강조일 때는 학습자의 발화가 성공했음을 나타내는 기능을 했다. 셋째, 자칫 감정적인 오해를 살 수 있는 감정표현 맞장구는 거의 사용 되지 않았다. 본 연구는 녹음 자료를 바탕으로 해 비언어적 맞장구를 풍부하게 추출해내지 못했다는 한계점을 가지고 있지만 교실 담화에서 교사가 다양한 유형의 맞장구를 유의미하게 사용하고 있음을 알려 준데 의의가 있다.

        이 연구는 대화분석의 연구 주제 중에서 인접쌍을 중심으로 초급 한국어 교실 담화에서 이루어지는 대화쌍의 양상을 파악하고자 한다. 실제 수업을 바탕으로 녹음과 전사체제를 통해 교사와 학습자의 교실담화를 분석하여 인접쌍을 이루는 대화 양상을 분석하고, 한국어 수업에서 이루어지는 교사와 학습자의 상호작용의 양상을 알아 보았다. 분석 결과 교실 담화에 나타난 다양한 인접쌍의 유형은 교실 현장에서 개별 문장이 아닌 순서의 교대에 의한 주고받는 말의 연습으로 진행된다는 것으로 볼 때 인접쌍을 중심으로 교실 담화를 분석하는 것은 교육적 적용에 기여하는 바가 높을 것으로 기대된다. 그리고 분석 결과를 토대로 교수자가 교수-학습 자료로 활용할 수 있고 초급 한국어 수업 모형을 제시할 때도 중요한 자료가 될 것으로 판단된다.

This paper analyzes the elements and properties of the discourse in the main text of Korean textbooks. The main text conveys ‘discourse knowledge’ that constitutes the communicative competence of Korean language on the basis of the fundamental properties of discourse rather than on unnatural sentences and conversations constructed only to present vocabulary and grammar. It consists of ‘discourse type’, ‘background knowledge’, ‘language use’, and ‘conversation organization’. As a result of this research, we found that the main text contains the following properties of discourse. First, the main text whose discourse type students frequently encounter is selected and language befitting that type is used. Second, the background knowledge of the discourse is presented. Third, the conversation of the main text is organized with the turn-taking system. The characteristics as a textbook are also taken into account in the main texts that we reviewed. These comprise dealing with limited discourse patterns, regulating language use, and the regular and restricted turn-taking system. The above analysis shows that the main text is constructed utilizing both aspects of education and discourse. The findings of this study will be helpful for textbook users in developing instruction and studying strategies and for textbook developers in constructing main texts.

        Sungsoo Ok and Soo-Yeon Kim. 2017. Sensitivity to D-linking Effects in Island Construction Processing by Korean Speakers. Studies in Modern Grammar 96, 109-127. Questioning across-the-board effects of islands and D-linking in wh-interrogative construction, this study presents the results of two acceptability judgement experiments where judgements of Korean native speakers for Korean wh-interrogative constructions and for English wh-interrogative constructions are provided and compared. With respect to Korean wh-questions, native Korean speakers show different acceptability patterns depending on whether wh-phrases move overtly or not. When they are scrambled, presence of islands and the D-linking feature of wh-phrase affect acceptability in Korean as if they do in English: the former degrades the acceptability while there is an increase in acceptability status in the latter. As for in-situ cases, however, D-linking rather downgrades the acceptability of the sentences. In the second experiment on English wh-questions with Korean EFL learners, there are statistically significant, but comparatively marginal, effects of island constructions and D-linking on whinterrogative judgements. These results indicate that island effects and D-linking effects are not ubiquitous with the same degree but that they do vary depending on the language type, overtness of movement, and whether the tested language is L1 or L2.

        The purpose of this paper is to give a pragmatic and sociocultural description of the discourse particle (DP) ani ``no`` in Korean. From a sociocultural perspective, a variety of discourse functions of ani are analyzed as a product of high-context communication strategies, which put interactional relationships before information delivery. For the pragmatic analysis, following Lee(1996, 2011), I assume that the DP ani has one basic sense that the speaker has a different view, and demonstrate that all the pragmatic uses of the DP can be inferred from the basic sense in accordance with the Gricean Cooperative Principle; different from the previous studies, ani is analyzed not as representing the speaker`s negative attitude, but as a difference-representing DP.

        The purpose of this paper is to give a pragmatic and sociocultural description of the discourse particle (DP) yey 'yes' in Korean. From a sociocultural perspective, a variety of discourse functions of yey are analyzed as a product of high-context communication strategies, which put interactional relationships before information delivery. For a pragmatic analysis, following Lee(1996, 1997, 1999, 2008), I assume that the DP yey has one basic sense of the speaker's positive attitude, and demonstrate that all the pragmatic uses of the DP can be inferred from the basic sense in accordance with the Gricean Cooperative Principle; all the pragmatic uses are broadly categorized into 2 groups, informative functions and politeness function.
