The annual number of odor complaints increased about 10 times over 14 years from 4,302 in 2005 to 40,854 in 2019, in Korea. Especially, livestock facilities account for more than 50% of the odor complaints and the swine farms account for the most odor complaints among livestock. It is therefore necessary to manage swine farms as the major odor emission source. In this study, a real-time odor monitoring system equipped with PTR-TOF-MS (proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometric) was used to measure the odorous substances in two swine farms. Odorous substances emitted from outlets were sampled and measured at the two types of swine farms. In addition, the boundary spots were designated as measurement points. As a result, the rankings of the odorous substances in order, from highest to lowest, were ammonia, acetaldehyde, methyl mercaptan, fatty acids, etc. and the level of odor intensity was 0.8-4.4 at the outlet of the swine farms. The concentration at the boundary decreased between 1/100 ~ 1/10000 compared to the concentration emitted from outlets. Base on the results of evaluating odor activity values, Skatole and p-Cresol were estimated as major odor substances in swine farms.

The present trial verified the effects of spraying microbial agents on odor reduction in commercial pig farms of different operating sizes and barn types. Farms without microbial agent spraying and those sprayed with microbial agents at two different intervals were compared. The treatments included spraying of water alone every day or a mixture of water plus microbial agent at 24 and 72 h intervals. The experimental farms were divided according to size into 1,000-, 3,000-, and 5,000-head farms and according to barn type into gestation, farrowing, nursery, and grower-finisher farms. To compare odor concentration within each housing barn, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gas levels were measured. The average concentrations of ammonia (p<0.01) and hydrogen sulfide (p<0.05) gas were the lowest in all types of farms sprayed with the microbial agent at a 24 h interval. In farms sprayed with the microbial agent at a 24 h interval, the decrease in ammonia concentration according to barn type was in the following order: farrowing (p<0.01) (11.0 to 1.8 ppm), nursery (p<0.05) (17.0 to 9.2 ppm), grower-finisher (15.3 to 8.8 ppm), and gestation (9.7 to 6.4 ppm) farms. Moreover, spraying the microbial agent at a 24 h interval significantly (p<0.01) decreased ammonia concentration from 19.9 to 10.4 ppm, from 11.1 to 4.1 ppm, and from 8.8 to 5.1 ppm in 5,000-, 3,000-, and 1,000-head farms, respectively. Overall, spraying microbial agents every day may be the most effective method to reduce odor in commercial pig farms.

Most of the white fumes from the tenter process of a textile plant in an industrial complex are generated by water vapor and oil mist. While general water vapor disappears when the humidity is lowered, the white fume generated in the tenter process does not disappear and is continuously maintained, resulting in environmental problems and complaints. Efforts to reduce white fume are being conducted, but it is vitally important to develop a performance index that quantitatively calculates and deduces the degree by which white fume has been reduced, so that a tangible and visible result can be obtained in the performance evaluation of prevention facilities. In this study, the removal efficiency or performance of a general wet scrubber and a wet electrostatic precipitator (electrical fume collector, EFC) installed in the actual textile tenter process was analyzed by the light scattering method that can measure the concentration of particles up to a high level. The white fume removal efficiency of the EFC was 92%, much higher than the 17% removal efficiency of the general scrubber. In addition, the EFC was more effective in removing toluene, 1,1'- [oxybis(methylene)]bis- Benzene, and benzothiazole, which are the major substances generated from the textile tenter process, as well as complex odors. From these results, it was found that the light scattering method is one of the useful tools to evaluate the performance of white fume prevention facilities in the industrial field in terms of satisfying the urgent need for measurement and the ability to obtain a clear and precise result on site. This approach is meaningful in that real-time quantification is applicable more intuitively than the gravimetric method in assessing the fume removal performance as it can be observed with the naked eye.

This study was conducted to identify and assess key parameters affecting greenhouse gas emissions and odor intensity at a naturally ventilated dairy farm. Measurement data of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O), odorants (NH3 and H2S), and meteorological data (wind speed, temperature, relative humidity, and solar radiation) were posited as the parameters influencing those emissions. Carbon dioxide and methane emissions correlated well to CO2-equivalent emissions and the contribution of carbon dioxide emissions (R2=0.9181) was greater than that of methane emissions (R2=0.8854). Hydrogen sulfide emissions were highly correlated with odor intensity (R2=0.9989), but the contribution of ammonia emissions to odor intensity was not significant (R2=0.0081). No correlation among CO2-equivalent and odor intensity emissions and meteorological parameters was observed. In this study, the relationship between emissions of greenhouse gases and odor intensity in a naturally ventilated dairy barn mainly depended upon carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide emissions. The results in this study will be helpful in the mitigation planning of greenhouse gases and odor in animal feeding operations (CFOs).

In this study, the removal performance of high-concentration H2S and complex odors was evaluated for bio-filters installed in sewage treatment plants and manure treatment plants. The amount of odor generation according to temperature was found to be higher in summer than in spring. It was found that the longer the empty bed retention time of the bio-filter, the higher the odor removal efficiency. Therefore, in order to effectively remove odors, it is necessary to maintain a sufficiently long residence time when designing a bio-filter. In addition, a case in which a bio-filter and a wet pre-treatment system were combined to remove high-concentration odors was studied. The result showed that the wet pre-treatment was effective in removing high-concentration odors. In particular, most of the hydrogen sulfide could be adequately removed by wet pre-treatment.

Odor is a type of sensory pollution that can stimulate the human sense of smell when it occurs, causing discomfort and making it difficult to create a pleasant environment. For this reason, there is a high possibility of complaints regarding odors if odors occur in pigsties near residential properties, and the number of such complaints is also increasing. In addition, odors emanating from pigsties around military installations can cause physical and psychological harm, not only to the soldiers living in these type of facilities but also to the families belonging to military personnel living there as well. Because the concentration of odors varies due to diverse factors such as temperature, humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and interaction between causative materials, predicting odors based on only one factor is not proper or appropriate. Therefore, in this work, we sought to construct models that are based on several regression techniques of machine learning using data collected in field. And we selected and utilized the model that has the highest-accuracy in order to notify and warn residents of odors in advance. In this work, 3672 data items were used to train and test the model. The several machine learning algorithms to build the models are polynomial regression, ridge regression, K-nearest neighbor regression (KNN Regression), and random forest. Comparing the performance of models based on each algorithm, the study found that KNN Regression was the most suitable model, and the result obtained from KNN regression was significant.

An odor is referred to or described as an unpleasant smell that creates a disagreeable atmosphere and may impinge on the quality of life of people. Most of the odors that stimulate the human sense of smell and engender feelings of discomfort and disgust are odors mixed with various chemicals substances. Among designated odor substances, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, n-valeraldehyde, and iso-valeraldehyde may cause an irritating and sour sensation and give rise to headache, dizziness, vomiting, and unconsciousness. These aldehyde substances are mainly discharged in high concentrations from food chemicals, petrochemicals, and printing industry sources. The odor control technologies applied to prevent odors from aldehydes are absorption, adsorption, as well as biological methods and combustion methods. The threshold concentrations of aldehydes are low so that odors can be easily experienced even at very low concentrations. It is not easy to control aldehydes due to their particular physicochemical properties and because aging and poor management of the odor prevention technology is usually only available. In this study, trends with regard to research efforts on the development of technology that is effective in treating aldehydes were summarized.

Cooking, especially meat and fish grilling, is one of the representative sources of indoor and outdoor particulate matter (PM). Most of PM emitted from cooking is ultrafine dust (PM2.5). Since odorous organic acids, aldehydes, and volatile organic compounds are absorbed by PM and discharged, restaurants and food service industries are major sources of odorous PM emission that cause odor nuisance complaints in cities. PM emitted from cooking also contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are carcinogens. In this paper, the domestic PM emission status of biomass combustion, especially meat and fish grilling, was analyzed temporally and spatially. The results of previous studies on PM emission concentrations, emission rates, emission factors and their compositions from cooking were comprehensively summarized. In addition, the effects of food ingredient types, cooking methods, seasoning and oil addition and fuel types on the PM emission were reviewed. Much more PM was produced when cooking with charcoal rather than electricity or gas. The higher the fat content of food ingredients such as intestines, the higher the PM emission concentration and emission rate. There was a difference in the PM emissions depending on the cooking oil types, and the PM emission concentration was high when olive oil or corn oil was used. It is necessary to accumulate more information through followup studies on the emission concentrations, emission factors and properties of PM emitted from cooking activities. This information can be used for controlling odorous PM in restaurants and food service industries, and predicting the impacts of odorous PM on air quality and human health.

The sampling bag is used as a storage container for odor gas samples. It is known that the substances recovery rate of odor bags decreases during storage time, and the degree of recovery varies depending on the characteristics of the gas sample and the material of the bag. This study investigated the recovery rate of VFA (ACA, PPA, BTA, VLA) in PEA bags during storage time. In addition, a model was developed to estimate the recovery rate of each substance as a function of time. Standard gas (ACA, PPA, BTA, VLA mixed) recovery rate was used for the model development. The concentration of the compound in the bag was measured by SIFT-MS at intervals of 1 to 2 hours. The recovery rate according to the storage time was calculated as the ratio to the initial concentration. The recovery rate of each substance according to the storage period (12h, 24h, 36h, 48h) was ACA (66.2%, 62.8%, 55.6%, 52.0%), PPA (77.6%, 72.1%, 63.0%, 58.1%, 86.6%), BTA (86.6%, 81.3%, 71.6%, 66.9%), VLA (94.8%, 89.0%, 76.6%, 71.7%). The recovery rate continued to decrease over the course of 48 hours of storage time. ACA, PPA, and BTA showed the greatest decrease within the initial 12 hours, which is form of exponential decrease. Therefore, we considered a 1~3 degree polynomial regression model and a 1~2 degree exponential decay model. Each developed model was evaluated by r², RMSE, MAPE, AIC, and then a model for each substance was selected. Selected models were tested with recovery rate data from swine farm odor samples. Only the ACA model exhibited a good performance (r² = 0.76).

The adsorption method that is widely used in the field of odor control generally utilizes activated carbon. However, the development of an economical and efficient adsorbent is required due to the increased use of activated carbon and the high cost of raw materials. Accordingly, the use of waste as a raw material for new adsorbents is attracting attention both in Korea and abroad. In this study, the current status of domestic and overseas waste generation, characteristics of adsorbents, and research trends were investigated, and through this, it was found that a waste-derived adsorbent was an adequate substitute in terms of adsorption capacity and price compared to activated carbon.

Environmental fundamental facilities have different odor emission characteristics depending on the type of treatment facilities. To overcome the limitations of the olfactometry method, research needs to be conducted on how to calculate the dilution factor from the individual odor concentrations. The aim of this study was to determine the air dilution factor estimated from manually measured concentration data of individual odor substances (22 specified odor species) in three environmental treatment facilities. In order to calculate the optimum algorism for each environmental fundamental facility, three types of facilities were selected, the concentration of odor substances in the exhaust gas was measured, and the contribution of the overall dilution factor was evaluated. To estimate the dilution factor, four to six algorism were induced and evaluated by correlation analysis between substance concentration and complex odor data. Dilution factors from O municipal water treatment (MWT) and Y livestock wastewater treatment (LWT) facilities showed high level of dilution factors, because concentration levels of hydrogen sulfide and methylmercaptan, which had low odor threshold concentrations, were high. In S food waste treatment (FWT) facility, the aldehyde group strongly influenced dilution the factor (dominant substance: acetaldehyde, i-valeraldhyde and methylmercaptan). In the evaluation of four to six algorism to estimate the dilution factor, the vector algorism (described in the text) was optimum for O MWT and Y LWT, while the algorism using the sum of the top-three dominant substances showed the best outcome for S FWT. In further studies, estimation of the dilution factor from simultaneously monitored data by odor sensors will be developed and integrated with the results in this study.

This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of odor-causing substances in Yeosu national industrial complex, which is designated as an “Odor management Area,” in 2019 and the surrounding area. The sampling sites were divided into three areas: five sites within the industrial complex (Management area), one site within the borders of the complex (Boundary area), and two sites within residential areas (Affected area) affected by odors. The odor compounds were collected from March to September at dawn, daytime, and night. The analytical items were meteorological data, complex odor, legally-designated 22 odor compounds and other VOCs. Complex odor was exceeded on the limit three occasions at two sites in the management area. Ammonia, two types of sulfides, three types of aldehydes, and five VOCs were detected to be within the emission standards. Ammonia was the most frequently detected compounds. Aldehydes and sulfur compounds made a relatively high contribution to the level of odors. Therefore, aldehydes and sulfur compounds should be reduced first in order to prevent odors from occurring.

In this study, actual odor conditions were investigated in restaurants, livestock facilities, and major odor discharge facilities around daily life, and an odor modeling program was performed to find ways to improve odors in odor discharge facilities. The odor modeling results of restaurants around daily life showed that the complex odor concentration of large restaurants, which are close to residential areas, is higher than the acceptable complex odor standard at the receiving point. It was judged that a plan to increase the height of the restaurant odor outlets and a plan to reduce the amount of odor discharge was necessary. As a result of modeling the life odor of livestock housing facilities, when the distance from the housing facility is far away, the actual emission concentration is much lower than the acceptable emission concentration at the receiving point. It was judged that such facilities need to be reviewed for ways to reduce the emission of odorous substances, such as sealing the livestock housing facilities or improving the livestock environment. The main odor emission business sites that show complex odor concentration as 1,000 times or greater than the outlet odor emission standard were businesses associated with surfactant preparation, compounded feed manufacturing, textile dyeing processing, and waste disposal. Due to the separation distance and high exhaust gas flow rate, it was found that odor reduction measures are necessary. In this study, it was possible to present the allowable odor emission concentration at the discharge facilities such as restaurants, livestock houses, and industrial emission facilities by performing the process of verifying the discharge concentration of the actual discharge facility and the result of living odor modeling. It is believed that suitable odor management and prevention facilities can be operated.

The effect of the change in air inflow velocity has been investigated at the opening of the malodor emission source to determine its influence on the Complex odor concentration. Both the Complex odor collection efficiency and concentrations were measured according to the change in airflow velocity. When the air inflow velocity was 0.1 m/s, it was observed that some of the generated gas streams were diffused to the outside due to low collection efficiency. In contrast, only the increased gas collection volume up to 0.5 m/s showed no substantial reduction of the Complex odor concentration, which indicates an increase in the size of the local exhaust system as well as the operation cost for the Complex odor control device. When the air inflow velocity reached 0.3 m/s, the Complex odor concentrations not only were the lowest, but the odorous gas could also be collected efficiently. The air inflow velocity at the opening of the malodor emission source was considered the key factor in determining the gas collection volume. Therefore, based on the results of this study, an optimal air inflow velocity might be suggestive to be 0.3 m/s.

In Korea, odor emission control is carried out at the boundary between the discharge port and the site based on the height of the discharge port, but in Japan and the U.K. a range of characteristics are considered in odor management, including the height, size, and amount of exhaust gas, when managing the acceptance criteria of the discharge port that conforms to the odor concentration standards based on the site boundary. In this study, the permitted concentration of odor in the outlet was studied considering the design conditions of the outlet, in order to manage it based on the distance between the outlet and the residential area. To improve the effectiveness of odor management, Korean odor management measures were reviewed by applying the methods used to calculate odor concentration in Japan and the U.K. Guidelines on effective odor reduction were provided by calculating the permissible odor concentration for each condition based on the flow rate and height of the final outlet to comply with the permissible concentration at regular intervals at the outlet of the factory.

This study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of a carrier media with natural minerals as packing material in a biofilter to remove odor-causing compounds. The carriers were prepared by mixing powdered zeolite, barley stone, and clay. They have a pellet type with a length of 5m m to 10 mm, 3.2 m2/g of a specific surface area, and 0.04 cm3/g of a pore volume. The adsorption capacity and the biodegradation by biomass formation on the media were experimented with toluene and ammonia as the test compounds. The carrier possessed the ability to adsorb toluene and ammonia. The adsorption capacity of toluene and ammonia at the inlet concentration of 100 ppmv was 58 g/g and 96 g/g, respectively. In the biofilter using the carrier as the packing material, the biofilter performances were different depending on the supply of moisture and liquid-nutrient. The critical loading was found to be 33.13 g/m3/hr for toluene removal and 6.5g /m3/hr for ammonia removal even when no nutrients were supplied. The proposed material has been confirmed to be capable of adsorbing inorganic and organic compounds, and can be effectively applied as packing materials for the biofiltration.

Odor emitted from the degradation process of food waste is a common cause of public complaints, and appropriate odor treatment methods need to be implemented. In this study, a hybrid plasma catalyst system was applied to treat individual odorous compounds including acetaldehyde and hydrogen sulfide, which are known to be major odor compounds produced from food waste. MnOx catalysts were prepared by varying Mn/support loading ratios, and surface analyses showed that the Mn_5% catalyst achieved the highest performance because dominant manganese oxide species on the surface of the catalyst was found to be Mn2O3, Using the catalyst, the removal rate of hydrogen sulfide steadily increased as the space velocity in the MnOx catalyst reactor decreased. Meanwhile, the removal rate of acetaldehyde did not increase significantly when decreasing the space velocity more than 24,000 hr-1. Following the catalyst experiments using the individual odorous compounds, the hybrid system was applied for testing odor treatment of actual food waste. The actual food waste study showed that both hydrogen sulfide and acetaldehyde were steadily removed; hydrogen sulfide was removed almost completely during the initial 30-minute period, while the acetaldehyde removal was started after the decrease of hydrogen sulfide. In addition, it was confirmed that the dilution-to-threshold for odor reduced from 2,080 D/T to 300 D/T during the initial period. In conclusion, the plasma and Mn2O3 catalyst system can be applied in food waste collection containers to effectively control odor problems.

This study was conducted to separate microorganisms with excellent odor component decomposition ability from nature. Microorganisms growing sulfur and ammonia compounds as substrates were isolated and identified in the tidal flat of Suncheon Bay. The strain YUN4 cultured on ammonia and sulfur compound substrates was found to have 100% genetic homology to Streptomyces fulvissimus. The optimum growth temperature of YUN4 was 20oC to 40oC, and the optimum pH was investigated in the range of pH 5 to pH 9. In addition, in order to evaluate the ability to reduce odor, after mixing the culture strain with each concentration of 1%, 5%, and 10% in the malodor generating sample, the efficiency of malodor reduction was evaluated after 30 minutes. As a result, the ammonia decomposition efficiency was 82.4%~93.9%, and hydrogen sulfide was 88.7%~94.9%.

The concentrations of odor and volatile organic compound (VOC)-inducing substances were measured using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometers (SIFT-MS). SIFT-MS can continuously measure the concentration of odor-causing substances and VOCs in real time without pre-treatment steps. Measurements were conducted during the day and at night at 10 spots in the chemical block of the Sihwa industrial complex. Similar measurement results were observed in the daytime and nighttime for materials except methyl ethyl ketone with high concentrations. A high concentration of hydrogen sulfide was also measured at night. It is expected that an amount of emissions of VOCs and odor-causing substances under the absence of inspection can be traced if measured at other industrial complexes in vulnerable times.
