Four chemical treatments with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), copper sulfate (CuSO4), potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and chlorine (Cl2) were applied to the effluent pond water of a hybrid striped bass saltwater recirculating aquaculture system to compare their oxidation power. Four chemicals were applied at concentrations of 0 (control), 1, 5, 10 and 20 mg/l. An additional concentration of 40 mg/l was included in the chlorine treatment. Water samples from four hybrid striped bass ponds were tested with KMnO4 and Cl2. H2O2 did not reduce any of BOD, COD and chlorophyll-a, and copper sulfate was only effective on chlorophyll-a for the effluent pond. Removal efficiencies for chlorophyll-a by copper sulfate were 19.2%, 37.5%, 54.2% and 74.1% dose-dependently. Potassium permanganate effectively removed the BOD, COD and chlorophyll-a. The COD removal rates in four fish ponds varied from 15.9% to 31.6% at the concentration of 10 mg/l. Interestingly, Cl2 did not reduce the BOD and COD at all, but the BOD and COD instead increased drastically with increasing the Cl2 concentration. The pond water with the highest initial BOD and COD values among the fish ponds tested increased by 350% in the BOD and 150% in the COD at 20 mg/l. Furthermore, Cl2 did not significantly reduce any types of solid matter in this study, while KMnO4 seemed to reduce some extent volatile dissolved solid in the fish pond.

Fish mortality is the most important success factor in aquaculture management. To analyze the effect of mortality considering biological and economic condition is a important problem in land-based aquaculture. This study is aimed to analyze the effect of mortality for duration of cultivation in land-based aquaculture. This study builds the mathematical model that finds the value of decision variable to minimize cost that sums up the water pool usage cost, sorting cost, fingerling cost and feeding cost under critical standing corp constraint. The proposed mathematical model involves many aspects, both biological and economical: (1) number of fingerlings (2) timing and number of batch splitting event, based on (3) fish growth rate, (4) mortality, and (5) several farming expense. Numerical simulation model presented here in. The objective of numerical simulation is to provide for decision makers to analyse and comprehend the proposed model. When extensive biological and cost data become available, the proposed model can be widely applied to yield more accurate results.

Environmental changes exert harmful effects on organisms inhabiting coastal regions. These changes are also associated with reduced production in aquaculture farms. In this study, we investigated internal and external responses of two Bivalvia species (Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus galloprovincialis) in Gamak Bay under stressful environmental conditions in aquaculture farms. We investigated external responses such as weight, size, and environment exposure time, and analyzed the expression of the HSP70 gene. C. gigas HSP70 gene expression level was significantly high in the C3 aquaculture farm site, but the weight and size of C. gigas were high in the C2 aquaculture farm site. The response of C. gigas HSP70 mRNA was associated with the environmental exposure time in each aquaculture farm. Expression of M. galloprovincialis HSP70 gene was found to be significantly higher in the M2 aquaculture farm site than in the M1 site, whereas the weight of M. galloprovincialis was observed to be higher in the M1 site. The size and environmental exposure time of M. galloprovincialis were similar between M1 and M2 sites. In addition, HSP70 sequences of C. gigas and M. galloprovincialis showed high similarity with that of another marine species. According to our results, there were differences in internal responses following environmental stress in aquaculture farms, with respect to HSP70 gene expression. The results suggest that the HSP70 gene is a useful molecular indicator for monitoring stress responses in Bivalvia species in the field.

This study aims to estimate the Green-House-Gas emissions from domestic farmed flounder in the southern sea and Jeju-Do, where is mainly produced, by the assessment of energy consumptions and GHG emissions from domestic fish farms for establishing reduce standards of greenhouse gas from a sustainable perspective. It needs to analyze such GHG emission components as feed, electricity, fuel, fixed capital, fish respiration, and liquid oxygen in two locations by 4 stage running water type farm size of small, small and medium, large and medium, large scale. The result showed that the mean GHG emissions were 36.83 kg·CO2/year in the southern sea and 24.33 kg·CO2/year in Jeju-Do, respectively, in the stage of production per fish 1kg at 2 locations and farm size from domestic farmed flounders, and it will give to be useful for policy, planning, and regulation of aquaculture development with establishing GHG reduction standards.

The study aims to identify the current status of aquaculture information in Korea and suggests policy directions for its integrated management. Firstly, the study focuses on the identification of the current status of aquaculture information by reviewing how aquaculture information is managed. Secondly, this study identifies problems such as lacks in necessary aquaculture information, inefficiency caused by dispersion and overlapping of information, absence of integrated management system and insufficient sharing of information. After identifying the current status of aquaculture information and its problems, the study suggests three basic directions to systematically integrate and manage the information such as establishment of infrastructure for promoting the integrated management of aquaculture information, generation and systematic management of useful aquaculture information and enhancement of user convenience. Finally, the study suggests detailed strategies such as establishment of a foundation to facilitate integrated management of aquaculture information, organization of organic network, sharing of more information, creation of necessary information through demand survey, creation of systematic management system, provision of a customized total service, and increase in education and PR activities on information use.
