        The purpose of this study was to examine the increased bone loss caused by ovariectomy through monitoring the concentrations of the collagen and the pyridinoline crosslinks of collagen. The ovariectomized rats treated for 8 weeks, were divided at random into two or three groups of 10. Ovariectomies were carried out from the saline-treated group (Ovx), the estrogentreated group (Ovx+ES) and chondroitin sulfate-treated group (Ovx+CS). Sham operations were performed on the sham-operated group (Sham). Ovx+ES and Ovx+CS groups showed the remarkably increased collagen and pyridinoline amount in the bone and cartilage compared to Ovx group. And as the result of the measurement of SOD, Catalase and GPx which are antioxidant enzyme, SOD and Catalase activities in Ovx group were much higer than in Sham group. But they were significantly decreased in Ovx+CS group. Based on these results, it is supposed that estrogen and condroitin sulfate can enhance collagen synthesis and affect the pyridinoline formation in collagen fibrils through stimulating lysyl oxidase activity. And it is also thought that chondroitin sulfate can inhibit aging by reducing antioxidant enzyme.

        The Surfactants composed of acylated aterocollagen which is produced by the acylation of the side chain amino radicals of aterocollagen with an aliphatic acid having 12 to 18 carbon atoms will be discussed in this study. This condensation is done at moderate reaction temperature (〈25℃) in aqueous alkaline solution. The products of this reaction were identified by UV/VIS spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. For these compounds, surface active properties and physical properties including isoelectric point, Krafft point, surface tension, critical micelle concentration(cmc), foaming power, viscosity behaviour, water holding capacity, skin irritation and emulsifying power were measured respectively. The experimental results received that the products have a good emulsifying power, excellent water holding capacity while having low skin irritation. Thus, these derivatives will be expected to be used as an emulsifying agent for O/W type cosmetic emulsion.

        최종당화산물은 환원당과 단백질, 지질 또는 핵산 사이의 당화반응에 의해서 생성되는 물질로 이 물질은 피부 노화 과정에 밀접하게 연관되어 있다고 보고되어 있다. 본 연구에서는 항산화 활성, 최종당화산물 생성 저해, 콜라겐과 최종당화산물의 교차결합 저해 및 억제, 엘라스타제 활성 저해 효능 시험을 통해서 비자나무 유박 추출물의 항노화 효과를 평가하였다. 시험 결과, 비자나무 유박 추출물은 폴리페놀과 플라보노이드를 함유하고 있으며, DPPH와 ABTS 자유라디칼을 50% 소거할 수 있는 농도는 각각 16.4 μg (Dried materials, DM)/mL과 16.7 μg DM/mL 로 관찰되었다. 또한, 비자나무 유박 추출물은 농도 의존적으로 최종당화산물 생성과 엘라스타제 활성을 저해하였고, 콜라겐과 최종당화산물의 교차결합을 저해 및 억제하 였다. 따라서 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 비자나무 유박 추출물은 항노화 효능이 있는 화장품 소재로서 활용 가치가 있음을 확인하였다.

        Background: Taraxacum platycarpum has been used in traditional medicine in Korea to treat intoxication and edema and as a diuretic. According to previous reports, it has anti-cancer, anti-gastritis, and anti-inflammation effects. However, the improvement effect of T. platycarpum on rheumatoid arthritis has not been investigated. The anti-oxidative and anti-inflammation effects of the aerial parts of T. platycarpum are different from those of its subterranean parts. Thus, we evaluated the effect of the water extracts of Taraxaci radix (WTR) on type II collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis (CIA) in animal models. Methods and Results: Rheumatoid arthritis was induced by type II collagen. WTR (100㎎/㎏ and 500㎎/㎏) was administered to the animal models. Methotrexate was used as the positive control. The levels of interleukin-6, TNF-alpha, and type II collagen IgG in the animals were measured by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Treatment with 500㎎/㎏ WTR decreased the serum levels of interleukin-6, TNF-alpha, and collagen IgG in the CIA models. Moreover, treatment with WTR diminished the arthritisinduced swelling of the hind legs and monocyte infiltration in the bloodvessels of the animal models. Conclusions: These results indicate that WTR has the potential to improve rheumatoid arthritis by reducing the levels of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha. However, further experiments are required to elucidate the influence of WTR on signal transduction in vitro and in vivo.
