A new hybrid, Cymbidium(C.) ‘Sunny Bell’ was developed as new hybrid by National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration, Suwon, Korea in 2013. This hybrid came from the progenies crossed between C. karan and ebruenum in 2000. Finally, one hundred-one seedlings were obtained after planting and acclimatization in green house. In 2007, one line was selected by their performance such as flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigorous growth and named ‘Wongyuo F1-47. The line code 000390-46 had uniformity and excellent characteristics. The selected line after second characteristics test was named as ‘Sunny Bell’. This hybrid had light purple colored petal and lip (RP59B)and large sized flower(diameter 7.9cm). A ‘Sunny Bell’ had about 7.8 flowers per flower stalk and small sized flower and plant. General impression of petals and sepals showed some incurved shape. The attitude of peduncle was erect. Bloom was started from February under optimal culture condition

Finally, eighty seven seedlings were obtained after planting and acclimatization in green house. In 2007, one line was selected by their performance such as flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigorous growth and named ‘Wongyuo F1-43. The line code 000550-78 had uniformity and excellent characteristics. The selected line after second characteristics test was named as ‘Beauty smile’. This hybrid had bright pink colored petal and lip (RP63D)and large sized flower(diameter 8.3cm). A ‘Beauty smile’ had about 13.3 flowers per flower stalk and medium sized flower and plant. General impression of petals and sepals showed some incurved shape. The attitude of peduncle was half-erect. Bloom was started from middle of November under optimal culture condition.

A cross was made in 1995 between Cymbidium “Tropical Yellow”, a brownish yellow colored petal and medium plant sized variety, and “Lucky Rainbow Rapin Hot”, a light purple-pink petal with red lip and medium sized variety. A cross was made in 1995 between Cymbidium “Tropical Yellow”, a brownish yellow colored petal and medium plant sized variety, and “Lucky Rainbow Lapin Hot”, a light purple-pink petal with red lip and medium sized variety. The eighty seven progenies were obtained after planting and acclimatization in green house. In 1999, a line (9529125) was selected and multiplicated for its flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigorous growing habit. After evaluation trial for two growing seasons, the selected line was named as “Bright Evening”. The “Bright Evening” has yellow petals and is a medium sized (average leaf length is about 62 cm and width of flower is about 6 cm) Cymbidium variety with vigorous growth and erect flower stalks. Blooming is started from November to February in optimal culture condition. High temperature (more than 30℃) and low light intensity should be avoided for the appropriate growth. In addition, flower stalks develop easily even from underdeveloped pseudobulbs.

Germination efficiency, such as days to germination and conditions for the hybrid seeds, was tested after hybrid seeds were sown on the medium. Seeds were germinated from 67 to 126 days after seeding in all cross combinations, and germination condition was different among hybrid combinations. There was big difference on days to germination based on the different media, that is, days to germination in the hyponex medium was shorter than that in the Knudson C medium. Mutants such as MMS and NaN3 were used to cause mutation. Germination occurred with 0.1 % NaN3 and MMS. However, even though germination occurred in other treatments (0.01 % and 0.2% of NaN3 and MMS), brownish phenomenon was intense, or did not proceed and got worse after 4-5 months of seeding. In addition, it was performed to choose appropriate medium for the growth of Cymbidium rhizome whose media adaptability is more different than other orchids. Different concentration of NAA and Kinetin was used. As a result, C. goeringii hybrid showed difference for the concentration of NAA and Kinetin combination.
