        This study aims to investigate the interaction patterns between the teacher and students or among students themselves in a Korean elementary English classroom by analysing classroom talk and by focusing on the types of the teacher’s questions and feedback as well as the use of L1 and L2. This analysis is used to determine the influence of such interaction on the students’ communicative skills in English. A female teacher in Gyeonggi province and a 6th-grade class participated in the data collection. This study included data from video or audio recordings, interviews, field notes, self-assessments, and portfolios. The transcribed data were analysed using Tsui’s (1994) framework and Verplaetse’s (1995, 2000) coding system. The results of this analysis indicated that the interaction patterns varied between participants into three groups: teacher-initiated talk (e.g., T-S talk) vs students-initiated talk (e.g., S-T talk & S-S talk). At the beginning stage of lesson, the teacher-initiated talk made up the majority of talk in English, and facilitated the students’ involvement in classroom learning including their language use. In the S-S talk, the students were involved in interaction which occurred naturally without the teacher’s control.

        Morphological competence plays an important role in extending one’s vocabulary in grammatical context. This study is to explore the developmental distribution of English grammatical morphemes appearing in elementary English textbooks. To this end, the study developed grammatical morpheme recognition and elicitation tests based on the bilingual syntax measurement (BSM). The tests are given to 114 fifth graders and 126 sixth graders across small, medium and metropolitan cities. The students were stratified into high, mid and low English ability groups by their English achievement scores. The result shows that English grammatical morpheme awareness was positively correlated with students’ English ability. The grammatical morphological development of Korean students was more in alignment with that of English learners as a foreign language than that of native speakers. Pedagogical implications are provided at the end of the paper.

        It is known that air pollutants such as fine dust and exhaust gas from vehicles are harmful to human health. In particular, the black carbon emitted by vehicles is known to cause a large number of premature deaths. This study analyzed the effect of a noise barrier on the inflow amount of black carbon from a nearby high traffic road to a school area, using numerical analysis performed at two elementary schools. Also, the correlation between the noise barrier’s shape, height and the inflow amount of black carbon was assessed. As a result, it was found that the higher the noise barrier, the lower the inflow amount of black carbon observed at the school A. However, the inflow amount of black carbon at school B was not greatly influenced by the height of the noise barrier. The inflow amount of black carbon at the schools could be changed not only by the height of the noise barrier, but also by the shape, height and position of the noise barrier and the school building.

        초등교사와 영양교사는 어린이 식생활 교육자로서 이들의 식품안전 및 위해에 대한 인식은 식생활교육에 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 주요 식품 위해 요인으로 오인되고 있는 식품첨가물에 대해 수도권 소재초등학교에 근무하는 초등교사(279명)와 영양교사(72명)를 대상으로 식품첨가물에 대한 인식 및 정보요구도에 대한 설문조사를 실시하여 분석함으로써, 식품첨가물에 대한 올바른 정보전달 촉진을 위한 기초자료를 확보하고자 하였다. 맛을 우선하는 교사(39.1%)에 비해 영양교사는 식품을 구입할 때 안전성(68.1%)을 가장 먼저 고려하여 유의한차이(p < 0.001)를 보였고, 제조사, 가격 유통기한 외에 교사는 원산지(32.5%), 영양교사는 주성분(50.0%)을 우선 확인한다고 하였다(p < 0.01). 식품표시 이해도는, 주성분, 식품첨가물, 영양성분, 인증마크 등 모든 부분에서 영양교사가 높았으며, 교사(3.53), 영양교사(4.17) 모두 식품첨가물관련 표시 이해도가 가장 낮게 나타났다. 교사, 영양교사 모두 식품의 안전을 위협하는 요인으로 환경오염물질, 식중독 세균과 바이러스, 식품첨가물 순서로 응답하였고, 가공식품 구매시 ‘무첨가’, ‘무색소’ 표시가 있는 식품을 구매한다는 응답 비율이 높았다. 또한 영양교사는 식품첨가 물이 안전성, 유효성 평가를 거치고(100%), 사용기준 및 규격이 정해져 있다(81.9%)는 것을 안다고 응답했음에도 불구하고, 교사(75.2%)보다 많은 87.5%가 식품첨가물 섭취는 건강에 위험하다고 응답하는 괴리를 보여 이들에 대한 올바른 정보전달의 필요성을 확인할 수 있었다. 교사 및 영양교사 모두 식품첨가물에 대해 가장 알고싶어 하는 정보는 ‘안전성과 위험성’이었고, 정보매체로는 교사는 TV(3.80)를, 영양교사는 강의(3.65)를 가장 선호하였다. 식품첨가물에 대한 정보 제공기관이나 제공자에 대한 신뢰도에서 정부기관이나 식약처 공무원에 대한 신뢰도는 병원, 대학연구기관, 의사, 연구원 등에 대한 신뢰도보다 낮았다. 대중매체의 정보는 신뢰하지 않는다는 비율이 높았으나, 대중매체를 접한 후 교사(39.4%)는 식품첨가물 표시를 보게 된다고 하였고, 영양교사(50%)는 식품첨가물이 함유된 식품을 줄인다고 응답하여 그 영향력을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 대중매체 내용이 선정적·감성적 접근을 하여 문제가 있다고 답변하며, 정부가 잘못된 정보를 곧바로 바로잡을 수 있도록 전문가 집단을 활용하여 균형적으로 정보를 제공하여야 한다고 지적하였다. 본 연구 결과, 초등교사와 영양교사는 식품첨가물에 대해 각기 다른 인식과 정보요구도를 보이고 있어 어린이들에게 올바른 식생활교육을 할 수 있도록 식품첨가물에 대한 정보전달 노력이 요구된다.

        This study explores the morphological awareness of different graders with different vocabulary levels. A total of 275 elementary students (148 5th graders and 127 6th graders) across small, midium and large cities are selected to test their morphological awareness. First, they were divided into 30%, 40% and 30% of students according to their vocabulary levels. Second, they were tested on the recognition tests, the production tests and the distributional tests of English derivational morphemes divided by the prefixes and the suffixes appeared in the English textbooks. The results are: The recognition and production tests show significant differences for both vocabulary levels and different English levels across different grades. However, the distributional test shows no clear difference like the other two tests. Based on the results, the study draws the conclusion that morphological awareness is developing in the order of recognition, production and distribution of morphologized words in sentences. In other words, recognition of forms precedes the production of forms, and the production is followed by the functional awareness of morphologized words.

        The present study sought to examine the continuity of the English textbooks of the elementary school 6th grade and the middle school 1st grade by analyzing the readability and vocabulary difficulty of their reading passages. It investigated the continuity between textbooks of the two grades and among chapters of each textbook. For the analysis, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Index was used to measure the readability of reading passages, whereas vocabulary difficulty was measured in terms of TTR (type-token ratio) and frequency by using VocabProfile. The results showed that the readability of middle school textbooks was one point higher than that of elementary school textbooks. Given that the readability index is based on the American school system, the increase in readability index between grades can be seen as large gap. In terms of vocabulary difficulty, the total amount of vocabulary in the middle school textbooks was three times as much as that of the elementary school textbooks. Second, readability index fluctuated across the chapters of each textbook, while the TTR was found to be higher in the former chapters than in the latter chapters in elementary school textbooks. All these could lead to learning difficulties for students. Pedagogical implications are discussed.

        The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between prosody and reading comprehension of elementary school students in Korea. To achieve the purpose of the study, 114 fifth and sixth graders were selected from three schools of Seoul city and Gyeonggi province, and their prosody, word recognition and comprehension were assessed. In order to measure their prosody, students were asked to read a reading text orally for one minute, and the teacher checked their reading rate, decoding accuracy, and prosody. Students’ prosody was measured through Clay and Imlach’s (1971) method. The results of this study showed that while most students gained higher score in word recognition and reading rate, their prosodic features was found comparatively weak. It also revealed a correlation between the three sub-categories of prosody and reading comprehension. Based on the results of this study, it could be concluded that prosodic reading features of Korean EFL students have co-relations with comprehension, even if their prosodic feature is weak. Finally some ideas for enhancing prosody in L2 students’ reading instruction were suggested.

        본 연구의 목적은 초등학교 과학교과서에 나오는 지구과학 지식에 대한 질문을 분석하는 것이다. 교육대학교 교과목 수업에서 과학교과서에 나오는 지구과학 지식에 대한 교사로서의 질문을 조별 활동을 통해 추출하였다. 질문의 종류와 빈도, 그리고 질문의 인지적 배경 출처를 조사 분석한 결과를 토대로 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 지구과학 부문별 질문의 종류와 집중 정도, 그리고 질문의 인지적 배경 출처에 차이가 있었다. 특히 천문관련 부문에서는 다른 부문과는 달리 개별 차시별로 질문 빈도와 집중이 다른 경향을 보이므로 이를 고려한 교수 설계를 할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 인지적 배경 출처로서 '학교' 비율이 가장 높으며, '친구'도 매우 중요한 출처이므로 동료 간 상호작용을 유도하는 협력이 학습에 중요한 요소임을 보여주고 있다. 또한, '인터넷'과 'TV' 같은 대중매체가 '학교'와 비슷한 높은 수준으로 인지적 배경 지식의 출처임을 보여 주고 있어서 이들을 이용한 과학 수업에 대한 고려가 필요하다. 셋째, 차시에 따라 질문의 집중과 종류, 빈도가 다르므로 교사 교육에서 단원별 학습주제에 대한 교육적 접근에서 이를 활용하는 교수방략이 요청된다.

        본 연구는 초등학생에게 행복힐링코칭 프로그램을 적용함으로써 학교생활에서 발생되는 아동의 정서·행동상의 문제개선과 학교적응성을 높이고, 코칭활동을 통해 주관적으로 느끼는 행복한 학교환경을 개선하고 학교생활에서 행복감을 높이는 근거자료를 제공하는데 목적이 있다.연구대상은 초등학교 4,5,6학년을 대상으로 아동과 코치가 1:1면대면 방식으로 주1회 60분에서 90분씩 총10회기 동안 코칭을 실시하였다. 행복힐링코칭 프로그램을 통해 아동의 정서·행동을 개선하고, 학교폭력으로 발생되는 정서적 문제를 해결하는데 도움을 줄 수 있었으며, 자기이해, 대인관계개선, 계획과 실행력향상 및 자기효능감을 높여 아동의 학교행복감을 증가시키는데 긍정적인 영향을 주었다고 볼 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 향후 행복힐링코칭 프로그램을 전국적으로 확대 실시할 수 있는 설득력을 확보한 것으로 볼 수 있고, 향후 학교폭력예방과 치료, 아동의 정서·행동문제 개선, 친구·가족·교사와의 관계개선, 학업성취, 진로지도, 교사역량계발, 학부모교육 등 다양한 분야에서 코칭이 학교현장에 확대·적용 실시될 수 있도록 지속적인 연구와 프로그램계발이 필요함을 발견할 수 있었다.

        본 연구는 초등학생의 농촌체험 활동이 전반적인 만족도에 미치는 영향관계를 분석하였다. 주요 분석결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 농촌체험의 참여목적은 체험활동의 의미, 부모나 친구의 권유, 숙제의 순으로 나타났다. 둘째, 농촌체험의 만족도인 종속변수와 흥미성, 다양성, 쾌적성, 친밀성의 독립변수간의 영향관계를 분석한 결과, 흥미성, 다양성, 친밀성은 채택되었지만 쾌적성은 기각되었다. 셋째, 농촌체험의 참여동기에 따라 흥미성, 다양성, 쾌적성, 친밀성은 차이가 있었다. 또한 흥미성은 주변관광과 농촌호기심, 권유, 학교숙제, 체험활동 의미의 집단 간, 다양성은 주변관광과 체험활동의 의미, 권유, 학교숙제의 집단간, 친밀성은 농촌에 대한 호기심 집단과 권유 집단간에 유의한 차이가 있었다.

        The purpose of present study was to explore the reading fluency of elemenatary school students in Korea. To achieve the purpose of this study, 150 sixth grade students were selected from two schools of Gyeonggi province and their reading fluency was evaluated. Assessment of reading fluency was administered as follows: students were asked to read orally a reading text for one minute, which was developed for this study and the teacher checked their reading performance according to assessment criteria developed by Zutell and Rasinski (1991). Reading fluency dealt with four subcategories: decoding accuracy, reading rate per a minute (WCPM), expression, and comprehension. Mean score at each subcategory and its aspect were analyzed, expression element were compared between the lower and higher group, and finally co-relation between reading fluency and comprehension were examined. The results showed that while most students gained higher score in decoding accuracy or reading rate, their expression was lower. Among four sub-categories of expression, i.e. expression and volume, phrasing, smoothness, and reading rate, score of expression and volume was the lowest. Most students read text with little expression or enthusiasm in their voice. On the basis of the result, some ideas for teaching fluency were suggested.

        The purpose of this quantitative research was to examine whether there were statistically significant differences in Islamic elementary public school teachers’ curriculum orientation and teaching conception across demographic variables of gender, age, and teaching experience. Data were collected through questionnaires from 65 Islamic elementary public school teachers. Data were analysed through Rasch analysis and tests of inferential statistics. The results of the data analysis show that, over all: 1) the teachers’ curriculum orientation tended to be “technological” and “academic” rather than “social reconstructionistic”; and 2) the teachers tended to conceptualize teaching as “apprenticeshipdevelopmental” and “knowledge transmission” rather than “nurturing” or “social reform”. Tests of inferential statistics revealed a significant difference between male and female teachers’ conception of teaching. A significant difference was also found in the teachers’ curriculum orientation across the demographic variable of teaching experience. No significant difference was found across the variable of age. Correlations were identified between the teachers’ curriculum orientation and teaching conception. The findings of this study provide evidence for policy makers, school leaders, researchers, parents, and teacher educators that the curriculum orientation and teaching conception of the majority of the teachers seems to be incompatible with the nature of character education that necessitates teachers to be “nurturing” and “social reconstructionistic”. In addition, evaluation and reorientation of paradigms and approaches in teacher education and educational objectives and further research are suggested.

Moreover, a questionnaire survey for analyzing teachers' needs on teaching mate rials was conducted to elementalY school teachers. These resu lts were used as a fo undation to design the teaching materials. The major research findings are as follows: First, the developed teaching materials are expected to he lp teachers to teach underac hievers with practica l mater ia ls in the Engli sh e lementary classroom. Second, the suggested directions for developing teaching materials can gu ide teachers to develop the ir own teac hing materi als for underachi evers. Third, the integrated results of meta-ana lysis of the previous studies on teach ing underachievers help teachers to understand underac hievers better and thus construct effective teach ing strategies, teaching methods, and teaching contents.

        This study aimed to identify the continuity between 6th grade elementary school English textbooks and 1st grade middle school English textbooks using Coh-Meu'ix, an automated web-based program designed to analyze and calculate the coherence oftexts on a wide range of measures. The measured value of text types was compared and classified into the surface linguistic features (the basic count, word rrequency, readabi li ty, connective information, pronoun information, word information) and the deep linguistic features (co-referential cohesion and semantic cohesion, lexical diversity, syntactic complexity). The findings were as follows: First, the basic counts and words before the main verb had a significant different value between two levels of textbooks. The results were remarkably different in the written language. Second, FKGL (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level) and the pronoun ratio were significantly different only in the written language. In addition, type-token ratios in written language showed more significant differences than spoken language. Third, other language features showed only a mild and gradual difference. Finally, the resu lt indicated there were no statistical differences of discourse aspects.

        This study is to find out how much elementary school members have their consciousness against safety in their school. Simple questionnaire 1206 sheets have been distributed to the members and additional interview with teachers to take care of them. Statistically, frequency, and correlation analysis have been made and chi-test has also been made for data reliability. The results of these have been summarized as running on corridor with 53.4% in school safety, warming up exercise 45.2% in leisure safety, evacuation form classroom with 2.4% in fire safety, crossing around just in fromt or rear of vehicle with 61.2% in transportation safety. It is thought that safety training should be provided to more for man than for girl pupils and also, safety consciousness should be improved than all the other area.
