PURPOSES : Pavement surface friction depends significantly on pavement surface texture characteristics. The mean texture depth (MTD), which is an index representing pavement surface texture characteristics, is typically used to predict pavement surface friction. However, the MTD may not be sufficient to represent the texture characteristics to predict friction. To enhance the prediction of pavement surface friction, one must select additional variables that can explain complex pavement surface textures. METHODS : In this study, pavement surface texture characteristics that affect pavement surface friction were analyzed based on the friction mechanism. The wavelength, pavement surface texture shape, and pavement texture depth were hypothesized to significantly affect the surface friction of pavement. To verify this, the effects of the three abovementioned pavement surface texture characteristics on pavement surface friction must be investigated. However, because the surface texture of actual pavements is irregular, examining the individual effects of these characteristics is difficult. To achieve this goal, the selected pavement surface texture characteristics were formed quantitatively, and the irregularities of the actual pavement surface texture were improved by artificially forming the pavement surface texture using threedimensionally printed specimens. To reflect the pavement surface texture characteristics in the specimen, the MTD was set as the pavement surface texture depth, and the exposed aggregate number (EAN) was set as a variable. Additionally, the aggregate shape was controlled to reflect the characteristics of the pavement surface texture of the specimen. Subsequently, a shape index was proposed and implemented in a statistical analysis to investigate its effect on pavement friction. The pavement surface friction was measured via the British pendulum test, which enables measurement to be performed in narrow areas, considering the limited size of the three-dimensionally printed specimens. On wet pavement surfaces, the pavement surface friction reduced significantly because of the water film, which intensified the effect of the pavement surface texture. Therefore, the pavement surface friction was measured under wet conditions. Accordingly, a BPN (wet) prediction model was proposed by statistically analyzing the relationship among the MTD, EAN, aggregate shape, and BPN (wet). RESULTS : Pavement surface friction is affected by adhesion and hysteresis, with hysteresis being the predominant factor under wet conditions. Because hysteresis is caused by the deformation of rubber, pavement surface friction can be secured through the formation of a pavement surface texture that causes rubber deformation. Hysteresis occurs through the function of macro-textures among pavement surface textures, and the effects of macro-texture factors such as the EAN, MTD, and aggregate shape on the BPN (wet) are as follows: 1) The MTD ranges set in this study are 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2, and under the experimental conditions, the BPN (wet) increases linearly with the MTD. 2) An optimum EAN is indicated when the BPN (wet) is the maximum, and the BPN decreases after its maximum value is attained. This may be because when the EAN increases excessively, the space for the rubber to penetrate decreases, thereby reducing the hysteresis. 3) The shape of the aggregate is closely related to the EAN; meanwhile, the maximum value of the pavement surface friction and the optimum EAN change depending on the aggregate shape. This is believed to be due to changes in the rubber penetration volume based on the aggregate shape. Based on the results above, a statistical prediction model for the BPN (wet) is proposed using the MTD, EAN, and shape index as variables. CONCLUSIONS : The EAN, MTD, and aggregate shape are crucial factors in predicting skid resistance. Notably, the EAN and aggregate shape, which are not incorporated into existing pavement surface friction prediction models, affect the pavement surface friction. However, the texture of the specimen created via three-dimensional printing differs significantly from the actual pavement surface texture. Therefore, the pavement surface friction prediction model proposed in this study should be supplemented with comparisons with actual pavement surface data in the future.

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a solid-state joining process and a rapidly growing dissimilar material welding technology for joining metallic alloys in the automotive industry. Welding tool shape and process conditions must be appropriately controlled to obtain high bonding characteristics. In this study, FSSW is performed on dissimilar materials AA5052-H32 aluminum alloy sheet and SPRC440 steel sheet, and the influence of the shape of joining tool and tool insertion depth during joining is investigated. A new intermetallic compound is produced at the aluminum and steel sheets joint. When the insertion depth of the tool is insufficient, the intermetallic compound between the two sheets did not form uniformly. As the insertion depth increased, the intermetallic compound layer become uniform and continuous. The joint specimen shows higher values of tensile shear load as the diameter and insertion depth of the tool increase. This shows that the uniform formation of the intermetallic compound strengthens the bonding force between the joining specimens and increases the tensile shear load.

The present research focuses on the tribological behavior of the AA5083 alloy-based hybrid surface composite using aluminosilicate and multi-walled-carbon nanotube through friction stir processing for automotive applications. The friction stir processing parameters (tool rotation and traverse speed) are varied based on full factorial design to understand their influence on the tribological characteristics of the developed hybrid composite. The surface morphology and composition of the worn hybrid composite are examined using a field-emission scanning electron microscope and an energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscope. No synergistic interaction is observed between the wear rate and friction coefficient of the hybrid composite plate. Also, adhesive wear is the major wear mechanism in both base material and hybrid composite. The influence of friction stir process parameters on wear rate and the friction coefficient is analyzed using the hybrid polynomial and multi-quadratic radial basis function. The models are utilized to optimize the friction stir processing parameters for reducing the rate of wear and friction coefficient using multi-quadratic RBF algorithm optimization.

In this study, we investigated the change in fracture properties after friction stir welding on Al606. In the L-T direction test, the fracture toughness of the unwelded base material was 275 MPa, and the specimen subjected to friction stir welding (FSW) was 227 MPa, showing that the fracture toughness decreased significantly with friction stir welding. In the T-L direction test, the difference between the base material and the weld material was not large, but the fracture toughness was shown to decrease during welding. In the comparison of the L-T direction and the T-L direction, it was found that both the base material and the weld material showed high fracture toughness in the L-T direction. In this study, the following conclusions were obtained after friction stir welding of Al 6061-T6.

Power converter devices require a high level of quality because they have a high direct connection with vehicle operation. Therefore, structural bonding was carried out by friction stir welding with excellent mechanical properties. Friction stir welding can cause structural deflection depending on the load of the welding tool, so it is important to control this for high quality flatness. In this study, pre-welding was performed before welding to minimize deflection generated during welding. And deflection reduction data according to the location of pre-welding were analyzed through dynamic analysis. As a result, based on computerized data rather than experimental data an optimized position of pre-welding was secured to minimize the deflection that occurs during friction stir welding. Through this, a process guide that enables high quality structural bonding was presented.

In this study, considering the expansion/contraction behavior of the upper structure at all times and the abnormal behavior of the receiving friction elements that allow horizontal movement during earthquakes, a port receiving test body simulating the protrusion of the friction elements was created and the modulus performance was evaluated. In order to confirm the influence of the friction element's projection, the friction element's degree of separation was divided into four stages, and the shear behavior of the test specimen and the friction coefficient were confirmed. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the friction load increases as the protrusion degree of the friction element increases. On the other hand, as the degree of protrusion of the coefficient of friction increases, the coefficient of friction also increases. It was confirmed that damage to the friction elements during use increases the coefficient of friction, hinders smooth expansion and contraction of the upper structure, and causes stress concentration at the fixed-end support.

High-temperature friction performances of graphite blocks (GBs) and zinc phosphate impregnated graphite blocks (IGBs) were evaluated under various friction temperatures. The surface of IGB exhibited extremely lower average friction coefficient values, that was 0.007 at 400 °C and 0.008 at 450 °C, in comparison to that of GB (0.13 at 400 °C and 0.16 at 450 °C, respectively). The worn surface of IGB in the high-temperature friction test was smoother and more complete than that of GB. The wear under high temperature and load caused the transformation of zinc pyrophosphate to zinc metaphosphate and the formation of a continuous large-area boundary lubrication layer combined with graphite and metallic element on the wear surface. The superior tribology property of IGB could be attributed to the digestion of iron oxides by tribo-chemical reactions and passivation of the exposed dangling covalent bonds. Specifically, the layered structure generated on the IGB wear interface effectively decreased the adhesive forces and prevented the surface from serious damage.

Phosphate coating is applied to the surface of the round bar material used in the multi-stage cold forging process for the purpose of lubrication. The film characteristics are determined according to the conditions of the phosphate film treatment process. In this study, the film properties according to the phosphate treatment conditions were defined as the coefficient of repeated friction and quantitative analysis was performed. Different friction behaviors were exhibited depending on the film properties, suggesting that optimization of the phosphate film treatment conditions is possible based on this. Finally, as a practical example, friction behavior according to the film characteristics was applied to the automotive engine bolt forming process. As a final conclusion, the need for linkage analysis with phosphating conditions for optimizing the forging process was raised. In addition, it can be seen that damage to the phosphate film should be considered in the process of predicting the limiting life of the die.

Various kinds of friction materials were manufactured by adding 10%, 20%, and 30% of reduced iron, respectively, which has been obtained during the reduction process of blast furnace sludge extracted from the blast furnace, and its iron oxide, instead of existing barium sulfate(BaSO4) among the components of automobile brake friction materials. Fundamental physical property test and friction performance test, etc., using a brake dynamometer were carried out against these friction materials. Furthermore, when the expensive filling material, BaSO4 was substituted by reduced iron and added to the friction material, the added content of reduced iron for an excellent friction characteristic considering the heat emission temperature, wear, etc., was 10%. In the fundamental physical property test, as the added content of blast furnace sludge or reduced iron increased, and as the content increased, the shear strength and bonding strength of friction materials decreased, but both of them indicated sufficient strengths to be applied to a friction material. Even in the frictional performance test using a brake dynamometer, as the added content of blast furnace sludge or reduced iron increased, the friction coefficient reacted insensibly to brake deceleration, and its stability was improved.

In this paper, the performance evaluation of Al-graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) composites surface engineered by a modified friction stir processing (FSP) is reported. Here, multiple micro channels (MCRF) are used to incorporate GNPs in the aluminium matrix instead of a single large groove (SCRF) that is usually used in conventional FSP. With the MCRF approach, ~ 18% higher peak temperature (compared to SCRF) was observed owing to the presence of aluminium sandwiched between consecutive microgrooves and higher heat accumulation in the stir zone. The MCRF approach have significantly reduced the coefficient of friction and wear rates of the processed composites by ~ 14% and ~ 57%, respectively as compared to the SCRF approach. The proposed reinforcement filling method significantly improves the particle dispersion in the matrix, which in turn changes the adhesion mode of wear in SCRF to abrasive mode in MCRF fabricated composites. The uniformly squeezed out GNP tribolayer prevented the direct metal to metal contact between composite and its counterpart which have effectively reduced the deterioration rates.

A wire rod, a material for multistage cold forging, is subjected to spheroidization and low annealing heat treatment to secure formability, and a phosphate coating treatment on the material surface to secure lubricity. The film layer produced by the phosphate treatment process is involved in adhesion to the material surface, adhesion to the forging die surface, and lubricity. This results in the increase or decrease of the forming load and the increase or decrease of the die life in the cold forging process. In particular, as the cold forging process progresses, the phosphate film is damaged and the original performance is deteriorated, so there is a high possibility of process defects. In case of excessive damage, the film is completely lost and die soldering occurs. Therefore, in this study, quantitative criteria for phosphate film damage are presented and the effect on the cold forging process is analyzed based on this to improve process analysis prediction accuracy. Therefore, in this study, quantitative criteria for phosphate film damage are presented, and based on this, the friction coefficient in the multi-stage cold forging process is to be derived.

Friction damping is often used as a vibration isolation medium to protect large objects from vibration. In this paper, it is modeled and analyzed a basis-excited nonlinear vibration system with friction damping using the SCPA method, which is one of the averaging methods. The displacement transmissibility and the stability of the steady state response were analyzed seperately for the linear and the non-linear spring systems. The critical frequency at which the relative motion starts was obtained as a function of the friction ratio, and the characteristics of the displacement transmissibility according to the change of the design parameters were investigated. In the case of the nonlinear spring system, the displacement transmissibilities were divided into three types and the motion characteristics were considered. In particular, there was a peculiarity that the displacement transmissibilty curve was separated at specific parameter values.
