Blast resistance of 18 rice cultivars which recommended as a high quality rice cultivars evaluated by blast nursery test, seedling test, and field screening and sequential planting methods. Sangmibyeo, Hwayeongbyeo, and Dongjin 1 were showed high resistance reaction to leaf blast at the blast nursery continuously, while Chucheongbyeo showed highest disease severity. All of the early maturing cultivars, Odaebyeo, Junghwabyeo, and Sangmibyeo, showed the lowest compatibility against 25 blast isolates. Saechucheongbyeo, a multiline variety of Chucheongbyeo genetic background showed 45.8%, half compatibility of 82.6% in Chucheongbyeo against 25 isolates screened. Diseased leaf areas (DLA, %) of cultivars were very low level at all test sites in the field test. Three cultivars, Sangmibyeo, Ilmibyeo, and Junghwabyeo didn’t show any leaf blast lesions across the test sites. The most variable incidences of panicle blast were observed on Odaebyeo which was 42.4%, 0.4%. and 0.0% at Jaecheon, Naju, and Chuncheon, respectively. In the sequential planting method, four rice cultivars, Nampyeongbyeo, Sindongjinbyeo, Hwayeongbyeo, and Junambyeo showed less than 40% disease leaf area (DLA) from 1st planting to 7th planting, so those cultivars were considered as a durable resistant rice cultivar against rice blast diseases.

This study was done to understand the G x E interaction of rice blast reaction for Japonica high quality rice varieties and to observe blast pattern for high quality varieties. Twenty one percent of the total sum of squares (SST) in blast reaction data of high quality Japonica varieties is attributed to genotype (G) by environment (E) interaction variation. This portion of blast response is higher than 8~12% of G x E effect in blast severity data obtained from various ecotypes of rice varieties. Blast response scores obtained from high quality Japonica varieties group were more severely affected by environment condition than mixed groups with Japonica and Indica varieties. Interaction Principal Component Analysis (IPCA) scores obtained from AMMI analysis for the leaf blast response implied variation of G x E interaction. Correlation analysis suggested that IPCA1 was associated with latitude, maximum mean temperature, precipitation and mean cloud amount. IPCA2 was associated with mean relative humidity, and IPCA3 was associated with precipitation and minimum relative humidity. Pattern analysis generated nine genotype clusters according to blast reaction over 11 regions. Collectively, the A, B, C, and D groups were susceptible to rice blast, where as the E, F, G, H, and I groups were relatively resistant to rice blast through multi-location blast nursery test. Relationship between the identified genes of high quality varieties and blast scores at each test site in the level of group could be analyzed based on the results from G x E Interaction analysis.

It is important to understand pedigree of rice cultivars commonly used for breeding. In this paper, pedigree tables for tracking the pedigree of 17 representative rice cultivars recommended by Rural development Adminstration (RDA) were completed and analyzed using two kinds of web database system; 'IRIS' and 'RRDB'. Seven cultivars, namely, 'Sangmibyeo', 'Ilpumbyeo', 'Saegewhabyeo', 'Surabyeo', 'Shindongjinbyeo', 'Ilmibyeo' and 'Jungwhabyeo' had 'Koshihikari' on the pedigree of their ancestor. Besides 'Koshihikari', the most feguently used ancestral germplasms among the high quality rice cultivars were 'Fujisaka 5', 'Kameno o' and 'Asahi', 'Fujisaka 5' was used as ancestral parent in 12 out of 17 cultivars. Interestingly, 'Kameno o' was used in pedigree of 16 out of 17 high quality varieties and 'Asahi' was used in the ancestral pedigree of all 17 varieties. 'Hwayeongbyeo' was used as one of parent in the breeding of 'Dongjin 1', 'Hwabongbyeo', 'Saegewhabyeo' and 'Junambyeo'. 'Ilpumbyeo' was used in the breeding pathway of 'Junambyeo' and 'Saegewhabyeo', 'Mangeumbyeo' itself was not enlisted as one of high quality rice cultivars, but was used as a breeding parent of three high quality varieties, namely, 'Saegewhabyeo', 'Hwabongbyeo' and 'Nampyeongbyeo'. Incorporated with evaluation data, pedigree will provide a valuable chance to genealogical tracking of agronomic traits such as disease resistance, grain quality and etc.
