        Optimum lot size calculation for real world manufacturing environment has been focused since last few decades. Several extensions have been made to the basic economic order and production order quantity models to realize the possible practical situations in industry. However, focus on work-in-process inventory has been ignored relatively. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the models developed for group technology based manufacturing environment focusing on work-in-process inventory. Models have been extended from a perfect manufacturing conditions to an imperfect manufacturing situation considering rework, rejection and inspection. Optimum lot size has been evaluated using a simple algebraic optimization approach. Significant parameters are highlighted using sensitivity analysis for the developed models. Numerical example is used to illustrate the utilization of such models in day-to-day production setups and the impact of significant factors’ variation on total cost and optimum lot size.

        In this paper, we investigate an inventory and production system in a three-layer supply chain system involving a single supplier, single manufacturer and multiple retailers. Earlier study in this type of supply chain only consider a single raw material in order to produce single item, but we consider raw materials in order to produce multiple items. It is assumed that the cycle time at each stage is an integer multiple of the adjacent downstream stage. We develop an iterative solution procedure to find the order quantity for the multiple items and raw materials that minimizes the supply chain-wide total cost per unit time of the supplier and manufacturer’s raw materials ordering and holding, setup and finished items holding, the retailer’s ordering and inventory holding. Numerical examples are presented to show that the proposed heuristic gives good performance.

        본 연구는 공급자(supplier)가 중간 유통자(wholesaler/retailer)의 수요 증대를 목적으로 중간 유통자의 주문량에 따라 차별적으로 외상 기간을 허용한다는 기본적인 가정 하에 중간 유통자의 재고 모형을 다루었다. 문제 분석을 위하여 최종 고객(customer)의 수요는 중간 유통자의 재고 수준에 따라 선형적(linearly)으로 증가한다는 가정하에 모형을 분석하였고, 모형 분석을 통하여 중간 유통자의 이익을 최대화하는 경제적 주문주기와 경제적 주문량 결정 방법을 제시하고, 예제를 통하여 그 제시된 해법의 타당성을 보였다.

        원전 해체 시 원자력설비는 안전하게 해체되어야 한다. 고리 1호기나 월성 1호기와 같은 노후화된 원전의 경우 곧 원전 해 체를 계획하고 있는 대상 원전이지만, 이 원전들의 가동 중단 후 해체 시 선원항 평가 기준, 제염 및 해체 기술 등의 독자적 인 국내 기술 확보는 미흡한 실정이다. 본 연구의 목적은 원전 선원항 평가 기술 중 하나로 In-Situ 기법을 이용하여 대형 원 전 기기를 직접 측정하여 측정대상체에 대한 선원항 평가방법을 개발하는 것이다. 원자로 헤드를 별도의 해체 없이 이동형 감마핵종분석기를 이용하여 직접 측정법으로 분석하고 간접 측정을 병행하여 측정 결과를 보완하였다. 그리고, 표면오염시 료는 방사화학분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과를 확장하여 원자로의 핵종 재고량을 계산하였다. 본 연구 결과를 토대로 각 핵 종별 방사능량 변화에 따라 해체 시점을 결정할 수 있으며, 원전 해체 시 작업자의 피폭 저감에 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다.

        We develop an optimization algorithm for a periodic review inventory system under a stochastic budget constraint. While most conventional studies on the periodic review inventory system consider a simple budget limit in terms of the inventory investment being less than a fixed budget, this study adopts more realistic assumption in that purchasing costs are paid at the time an order is arrived. Therefore, probability is employed to express the budget constraint. That is, the probability of total inventory investment to be less than budget must be greater than a certain value assuming that purchasing costs are paid at the time an order is arrived. We express the budget constraint in terms of the Lagrange multiplier and suggest a numerical method to obtain optional values of the cycle time and the safety factor to the system. We also perform the sensitivity analysis in order to investigate the dependence of important quantities on the budget constraint. We find that, as the amount of budget increases, the cycle time and the average inventory level increase, whereas the Lagrange multiplier decreases. In addition, as budget increases, the safety factor increases and reaches to a certain level. In particular, we derive the condition for the maximum safety factor.

        Due to their accessibility and 24-hr availability, convenience stores are an integral part of daily lives. Because they sell a limited number of products and have small shelf space, shelf space allocation and inventory replenishment are important considerations for inventory management that critically affect profit. In this paper, we propose five solutions for the vendor-managed inventory problem of convenience stores that maximize profit while considering stock-out-based product substitutions. The performance of the proposed solutions is evaluated via simulation to reflect the demand uncertainty and marketing activity.

        This paper deals with the economic value analysis of meteorological forecasts for a hypothetical inventory decision-making situation in the pharmaceutical industry. The value of Asian dust (AD) forecasts is assessed in terms of the expected value of profits by using a decision tree, which is transformed from the specific payoff structure. The forecast user is assumed to determine the inventory level by considering base profit, inventory cost, and lost sales cost. We estimate the information value of AD forecasts by comparing the two cases of decision-making with or without the AD forecast. The proposed method is verified for the real data of AD forecasts and events in Seoul during the period 2004~2008. The results indicate that AD forecasts can provide the forecast users with benefits, which have various ranges of values according to the relative rate of inventory and lost sales cost.

        In this paper, we develop an efficient approach to solve a continuous review inventory system with a budget constraint when the semi-finished product and optional components are required to be assembled. We are, in particular, interested in a budget constraint that includes a service level. The service cost, such as labor and facility costs, tends to increase as the service level increase, and it makes the problem difficult to solve. Assuming that the reorder point for a semi-finished product is given, we show that the order quantity for the semi-finished product and the order quantity and reorder point for optional components can be determined by minimizing the total cost that includes setup cost, inventory holding cost, and shortage cost. The performance of the proposed approach is tested by numerical examples. By using sensitivity analysis, we conclude that, as the reorder point for semi-finished product increases, the order quantity for semi-finished product increases, whereas the order quantity and reorder point of optional components decreases.

        As customers' demands for diversified small-quantity products have been increased, there have been great efforts for a firm to respond to customers' demands flexibly and minimize the cost of inventory at the same time. To achieve that goal, in SCM perspective, many firms have tried to control the inventory efficiently. We present an mathematical model to determine the near optimal (s, S) policy of the supply chain, composed of multi suppliers, a warehouse and multi retailers. (s, S) policy is to order the quantity up to target inventory level when inventory level falls below the reorder point. But it is difficult to analyze inventory level because it is varied with stochastic demand of customers. To reflect stochastic demand of customers in our model, we do the analyses in the following order. First, the analysis of inventory in retailers is done at the mathematical model that we present. Then, the analysis of demand pattern in a warehouse is performed as the inventory of a warehouse is much effected by retailers' order. After that, the analysis of inventory in a warehouse is followed. Finally, the integrated mathematical model is presented. It is not easy to get the solution of the mathematical model, because it includes many stochastic factors. Thus, we get the solutions after the stochastic demand is approximated, then they are verified by the simulations.

        This paper makes a detailed comparison between two metrics designed for measuring customer’s satisfaction in the retail industry. The first metric, which is called the customer service level, has not been widely used due to the intrinsic requirement on the parameter assumption(s) of the demand distribution. Unlike the customer service level metric the in stock ratio metric does not require any requirements on the demand distribution. And the in stock ratio metric is also very easy to understand the meaning. To develop the detailed planning activities for business with the in stock ratio metric on hand one should collect some information as following : 1) POS (Point of sales) data, 2) Inventory Data 3) Inventory Trend.

        Many retailer store managers are experiencing the situation where some customers balk at purchasing products if the stock is low. In this paper, we extend the single period newsvendor model in an environment of customer balking behavior occurring at double threshold inventory levels assuming the chance of sales during balking is a discrete function of inventory level. Our analysis is based on the assumption that only the mean and the variance of demand are known, without assuming any specific distributional form. We derive the explicit general expression of optimal order quantity with unknown distribution of demand with double threshold inventory levels of customer balking. Then, we illustrate the concepts developed here through simple numerical examples and conclude the future research topics under balking situation.

        We analyzed the effect of inventory pooling on the system where multiple depot was used to replenish retailers and where inventories are kept only on the depots. Inventory pooling consists of inventory integration and inventory exchange. We used simulation for checking the cost saving effect of reducing the number of depot (Inventory Integration) for the case when inventories kept on every depots are commonly used for all retailers when certain depot have stockَout for their retailer assigned to them (Inventory Exchange) with the constraint of service level. Simulation on wide range of parameter settings results show that cost saving effect from inventory integration diminishes when transportation cost between depot and retailers or stockَout cost, or retailer number increases. The effect becomes stronger when the demands on retailers have bigger variance or average. Also the results show that the cost saving effect from inventory exchange becomes stronger on the same situation when inventory integration effect becomes stronger.

        In this paper, we consider a single-manufacturer single-buyer supply chain problem where a single manufacturer purchases and processes raw materials into a family of items in order to deliver a family of items to a single buyer at a fixed interval of time for effective implementation of Just-In-Time Purchasing. An integrated multi-item lot-splitting model of facilitating multiple shipments in small lots between buyer and manufacturer is developed in a JIT Purchasing environment. Previous research on the integrated model assumed that the manufacturer orders raw materials m (integer) times for every production run (lot multiplier policy for the raw material). In this paper, we consider a generalized policy in the replenishment of raw materials, allowing lot multiplier policy and lot splitting policy. An iterative solution procedure is developed to find the order interval for finished goods and raw materials, and number of shipments between buyer and manufacturer. We show by numerical example that when the integrated policy is adopted by both buyer and manufacturer in a cooperative manner, both parties can benefit.
