        The purpose of this study is to analyse the research trends and to find a future direction in the area of clothing construction in Korea. The data were included articles on clothing construction published in the five major journals from 2000 through 2008 in Korea. The identified 513 articles were categorized in eight areas: design related clothing construction, study of body types, study of patterns, size of apparel, fitting of clothing, protective clothing and functional clothing, sewing and the others. In the results of examining the percentage of articles on clothing construction among articles published in each journal, the percentage of articles on clothing construction was highest as 21.2% in the Journal of Korean Home Economics and next, 19.3% in the Research Journal of the Costume Culture. As to the percentage of research on clothing construction according to theme, research on protective clothing and functional clothing were largest as 28.2%, and next, research on body types as 18.9%, and research on garment size systems as 10.5%. Research on protective clothing has increased remarkably since 2000, and particularly in 2004 it was so active that it occupied 44.1% of research on clothing construction. Next, with regard to the subjects of research, research with female subjects was more frequent than that with male subjects according to gender, and research with men and women in their twenties was most frequent according to age. These results show somewhat unbalanced tendencies in terms of research subjects.

        The purpose of the study was to explore the role of journal as a way to encourage pre-service teachers to reflect on their own learning experiences and to determine the extent of reflection through journal writing. Journals were kept by pre-service English teachers during a teacher preparation course where the focus was on the understanding of second language acquisition. Sixteen participants were juniors in an undergraduate teacher development program in a university in Korea. The journal entries the trainees kept were analyzed through content analysis method in relation to the dual role as learners and prospective teachers. Within this research framework, it was found that the pre-service English teachers reflected internally on their English learning experiences and could connect the concepts and abstract ideas to their personal experience of learning English. Also, pre-service teachers were able to display their reflective capabilities through the exercise of journal writing in spite of their limited L2 writing skills. From the findings it is suggested that journals can be used as a valuable tool for the teachers-in-preparation, both in developing reflective teachers and in generating powerful insights which later would influence their own classroom behavior and motivation as a teacher.

        The Korean Astronomical Data Center(KADC) in Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute(KASI) has developed a database of astronomical journals published by the Korean Astronomical Society and the Korean Space Science Society. It consists of all bibliographic records of the Journal of the Korean Astronomical Society(JKAS), Publication of the Korean Astronomical Society(PKAS), and Journal of Astronomy & Space Sciences(JASS). The KADC provides useful search functions in the search page such as search criterion of bibcode, publication date, author names, title words, or abstract words. The journal name is one of the search criterion in which more than one journal can be designated at the same time. The criterion of author name is provided bilingually: English or Korean. The abstract and full text can be downloaded as PDF files. It is also possible to search papers related to a specific research topic published in Korean astronomical journals, provided by the KADC, which often cannot be found the worldwide, Astrophysics Data System(ADS) services. The KADC will become basic infrastructure for the systematic construction of bibliographic records, and hence, make the society of Korean astronomers more interactive and collaborative.

        This is an interdisciplinary study based on Library and Information Science and English Education through the examination of scholarly communication on English education objectively. For this study, three scholarly journals English Teaching, Journal of The Applied Linguistics Association of Korea, and Foreign Languages Education were selected through surveys. A total of 1,091 research articles were analyzed in terms of the pattern of article production and writers, research topics, research methodologies, and research participants. Content analysis was performed to clarify the distinction between these three journals. The results showed that topics on language skills were the most examined out of the 16 categories in ET and FLE. On the other hand, topics on SLA ranked first in AL. In terms of methodology, quantitative research was conducted more frequently than qualitative and mixed methods research from the three journals. And in terms of participants, college students, including graduate students ranked first from the three journals. The findings suggest that scholarly communication needs to be extended to a broader context including students, classroom teachers and more researchers from the public and private sectors.

        This study aims at investigating Korean high school students’ reading and writing relations in English with a focus on analysis of effects of reading journal writing which integrates reading and writing. Three groups (reading, writing, reading journal writing) had different treatments for 8 weeks. The results revealed that the reading journal writing group had the highest post-test writing scores compared with the two other groups. This group’s scores were statistically significant different from the reading group’s. The same results were also found in the higher-level group. As for the lower-level group, however, the scores of the writing group were highest. These results support the bidirectional hypothesis with a special emphasis on the interaction of reading and writing. The higher-level and the lower-level reading journal writing group had the highest post-test reading scores; however, no statistical significance was noted among the three groups. The results of the reading test do not seem to be clearly related to any hypothesis of reading-writing relations. The results of the questionnaire survey and interview and of the analysis of reading journal suggest that effects of reading journal writing can vary with reading texts and learners’ language proficiency level.

        The first issue of The Yeats Journal of Korea published in 1991, just after the foundation of the Yeats Society of Korea on the same year. The society published the 25th volume of the journal on June 30, 2006. At first the journal was issued annually but since the year 1998, it has been published biannually. The aim of this paper is to check the citation of domestic material at the theses in the journal from the first issue to the 25th issue. As I imagines, it turns out that very few scholars seem to read the theses written by other Korean scholars. Only small number of theses among 234 theses acknowledge that they cite theses written by other scholar and published in this journal or other journal. Just a little more than the theses which acknowledge the citation of other scholars' theses acknowledge the citation of other author's books. Though some theses in The Yeats Journal of Korea acknowledge the citation of other scholars' theses and/or books, the number is very small. Compared with the long history and large volume of Yeats study in Korea, there should be more citation of domestic material. When we scholars read other scholars's theses and books, and cite them, if possible, The Yeats Journal of Korea will have the significance to exist. No citation can be interpreted as the scholars' confession that the theses were of no value. The way to develop Yeats study in Korea is to read the theses and books published in Korea as well as published in foreign counties.

        Astronomical research in Asian Pacific region has been growing rapidly in recent years. However, most important papers have been published in well established existing journals in US and Europe because we do not have high impact international journals in this region. I review the current trends of the local journals of East Asian countries and propose to establish a new regional journal by combining domestic journals.

        This study explores whether journal writing and in-class discussion operate for developing reflective teachers and investigates main issues understood and enhanced by Korean EFL teachers through journal writing and in-class discussion. Seven participants in this study were all in-service English teachers as well as graduate students taking a course on ‘reflective teaching’ in a large university in Seoul. They were supposed to write journals on the web once a week and to read others’ journals for the following in-class discussion. Main issues enhanced by participants through journal writing and in-class discussion were as follows: Teachers’ beliefs about profession as English teachers in Korea; Teaching techniques to make students’ learning successful; Teachers’ perceived difficulties in current teaching. As to the feasibility of journal writing, most of the participants reported that journal writing had been a turning point to be a reflective teacher and in-class discussion made them find lots of useful teaching tips and solutions for the problems they had met. This study provides teacher trainers and teachers themselves useful insights to develop reflective teaching and to better understand the current issues of English teaching in Korea.

        This study was conducted to explore the possibility and potential of developing a new EFL (English as a Foreign language) curriculum which aims to promote foreign language learning and enhance students’ understanding of the world. For this purpose, the study examined the integration of poetry and dialogue journal writing within an EFL curriculum. The Data collection consisted of a survey, interviews, samples of dialogue journal writing, a classroom video recording, the classroom teacher’s journal and the researcher’s field note and journal. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed to address the research question: What happens when EFL students read poetry within a response-oriented framework? Data analysis revealed that: 1) The students showed positive attitudes and beliefs toward using poetry through response-based instruction, 2) Students perceived that poetry and dialogue journal writing were a good resource for promoting English language, and 3) Students extended their learning experiences through their transactional readings of poetry. The study suggests that poetry and dialogue journal writing hold the potential to develop EFL curricula.

        The value of dialogue journal use for literacy development has been empirically substantiated from both first and second language studies. This experimental study investigated the effect of dialogue journal writing on the writing quality and reading comprehension ability of EFL college students in Korea. Subjects were 207 freshmen in four reading sections of a freshman English course. For a 10-week period, subjects in two experimental groups wrote dialogue journals, and their progress was compared with the progress of subjects in two control groups who answered comprehension questions in a pretest/posttest format. Writing quality was assessed holistically in two essays. Reading achievement was evaluated with two reading comprehension subtests of TOEFL. Results indicated that the journal-writing groups progressed better in the two areas, although not always to a degree that was statistically significant. Some limitation was also noted. It was concluded that the use of dialogue journals could be an effective technique in EFL instruction, as in L1 and ESL instruction, with general and particularly with reading courses.

        이 연구는 1991년부터 2003년까지 발간된 〈교정연구〉에 실린 논문에 대한 내용분석을 통해서 교정학의 연구영역과 연구동향에 관한 논의를 하고 있다. 총 207편의 논문을 분석의 대상으로 하여 연구주제와 연구방법론적 특성과 경향을 밝혀내고 있다. 그 주요 결과를 보면 먼저, 연구주제는 행형관련 주제에 국한되지 않고 상당히 다양했으나, 주제별로 상대적 중요도는 달랐다. 교정행정과 수용자관리, 그리고 교정처우의 법률적, 제도적인 논의는 풍부한 반면 교정의 다른 축인 수용자의 일상생활이나 독특한 문화를 이해하는 논의, 그리고 교정 프로그램의 실질적 효과를 측정하는 효과분석 논문은 양적으로 상당히 미미한 수준이었다. 한편 연구주제에 접근하는 방식인 방법론에 있어서는 대부분이 기술(description)수준의 문헌연구였으며, 실증연구인 경우에도 추론적 통계(inferential statistics)보다는 기술통계(descriptive statistics)를 제시하는 수준에 머물러 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 보다 교정학의 발전을 위해 더 관심이 주어져야 할 주제와 방법론적 향상을 위한 제언을 제시하고 있다.

        The present study aimed to investigate some differences in journal article abstracts written in English by Korean researchers and international scholars and to provide Korean researchers with guidelines for writing accurate, self-contained, informative and coherent abstracts. To this end, intra- and inter-lingual analyses of English abstracts were carried out in terms of rhetorical structures, linguistic features, and disciplinary areas. The results reveal that (1) international and Korean researchers show some differences of rhetorical and discourse features in their English abstracts and (2) some types of errors in terms of grammatical-syntactic and lexico-semantic aspects are frequently committed by Korean researchers. The results of this investigation suggest that Korean researchers should be aware of common rhetorical structures and linguistic features of English abstracts and graduate students should be provided with EAP courses to practice writing English abstracts relevant to their major areas.

        저널과의 마찰과 마멸을 줄이기 위하여 저널베어링이 사용된다. 저널베어링은 유체 윤활 상대에서 사용되나, 압력이 지나치게 높거나 회전 속도가 작아지면 탄성 유체 윤활 상태의 유막이 파괴되어 접촉부의 돌기가 접촉되는 경계 윤활 상태가 된다. 따라서 혼합 윤활 상태가 되면 저널베어링의 마멸량이 증가하게 된다 본 논문은 마멸율을 최소화함으로 저널베어링의 수명을 연장하는 최적설계를 수행하였다 목적 함수로 혼합 윤활 영역에서 적용되는 마멸을 함수를 사용하였고, 저널베어링 설계에서 고려할 성능 인자들인 마찰 손실, 안정 한계 속도, 유막 파라미터 등을 제약 함수로 사용하였다. 저널베어링 형상을 나타내는 베어링 반경, 축 반경, 베어링 폭 등에서 본 연구는 베어링 반경을 설계 변수로 하였다. 정식화한 설계인자를 이용하여 저널베어링의 최적 설계를 순차 이차 계획법인 PLBA알고리즘을 사용하여 수행하였다.

        근대교육기(1876∼1910) 중 1905년부터 1910년 사이는 우리 나라 교육에 대한 일제의 간섭이 가장 극심했던 시기였다. 이에 대응하여 우리 민족은 전국 단위나 지방 단위로 학회를 세웠고, 학회를 통하여 근대 교육을 실천하려는 의지를 보였다. 이 연구에서는 근대교육기에 국내에서 출판된 학회지 9종 132권을 분석하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 근대교육기에 발간된 학회지의 주요 내용은 민족의 정체성을 확립하기 위한 역사나 지리 등의 내용과 계몽적인 차원에서 서구의 정치나 경제 체제를 소개하는 글과 더불어 자연과학에 관한 논술도 상당한 비중을 차지했다는 점이다. 둘째, 과학 관련 논술을 분야별로 분석해보면 생리· 위생을 포함한 생물학 분야와 지구과학 분야가 비교적 많았다. 반면에 물리학이나 화학 분야는 아주 적었다는 특징이 나타난다. 셋째, 학회지에 게재된 지구과학 관련 논술만 분석하더라도, 대부분 같은 저자에 의해 교과서적인 기초 내용을 연재한 논술이 많이 보인다. 이러한 의미에서 학술지에 게재된 과학 관련 논술은 근대 교육기에 우리 나름의 과학 교육을 확립하기 위한 노력으로 평가된다.

        형상 최적설계에서 절점의 재배치 및 형상 민감도 계산은 많은 노력이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 구조물의 형상을 Bezier 곡선을 이용하여 표현하고, 민감도 계산을 위하여 개선된 직접미분법을 이용한다. 그리고, 절점의 재배치에는 변위장을 수정한 속도장을 이용한다. 또한, 본 연구에서는 자중을 고려한 외팔보와 3차원 저널베어링을 수치예제로 선택하여 본 연구의 기법들을 적용한 형상 최적설계를 해석한다.
