Mechanical alloying (MA) by high energy ball mill of Pure chromium Powders was carried out under the nitrogen gas atmosphere. Cr-N amorphous alloy powders have been produced through the solid-gas reaction subjected to MA. The atomic structure during amorphization process was observed by X-ray and neutron diffractions. An advantage of the neutron diffraction technique allows us to observe the local atomic structure surrounding a nitrogen atom. The coordination number of metal atoms around a N atom turns out to be 5.5 atoms. This implies that a nitrogen atom is located at both of centers of the tetrahedron and octahedron formed by metal atoms to stabilize an amorphous Cr-N structure. Also, we have revealed that a Cr-N amorphous alloy may produced from a mixture of pure Cr and Cr nitrides powders by solid-solid reaction during mechanical alloying.

The mechanical alloying effect has been studied on the three Cu-based alloy systems with a positive heat of mixing. The extended bcc solid solution has been formed in the Cu-V system and an amorphous phase in the Cu-Ta system. However, it is round that a mixture of nanocrystalline Cu and Mo Is formed in the Cu-Mo system. The neutron diffraction has been employed at a main tool to characterize the detailed amorphization process. The formation of an amorphous phase in Cu-Ta system can be understood by assuming that the smaller Cu atoms preferentially enter into the bcc Ta lattice during ball milling.

Lee et al. reported that a mixture of Cu and Ta, the combination of which is characterized by a positive heat of mixing, of +2 kJ/㏖, can be amorphized by mechanical alloying(MA). It is our aim to investigate to what extent the MA is capable of producing a non-equilibrium phase with increasing the heat of mixing. The system chosen is the binary with =+19 kJ/㏖. The mechanical alloying was carried out using a Fritsch P-5 planetary mill under Ar gas atmosphere. The vial and balls are made of Cu containing 1.8-2.0 wt.%Be to avoid contaminations arising mainly from Fe when steel balls and vial are used. The MA powders were characterized by the X-ray diffraction, EXAFS and thermal analysis. We conclude that two phase mixture of nanocrystalline fcc-Cu and bcc-Mo with grain size of 10 nm is formed by the ball-milling for a 3:7 mixture of pure Cu and Mo, the evidence for which has been deduced from the thermodynamic and structural analysis based on the DSC, X-ray diffraction and EXAFS spectra.

In order to obtain the nano size composite powders by mechanical alloying method for useful composite catalysis, the effects of mechanical alloying time on the formationof composite powders were analyzed. The phase transformation behaviors were experimented as the heat treating temperature increased. Homogeneous 10wt% Cu-rutile type composite powders were synthesized in 40 hours by mechanical alloying. After 60 hours mechanical alloying 50 nm size powders were obtained. Both the phase of mechanically alloyed 10 wt% and pure powders were not transformed to anatase after annealing at the temperature range between 350 to 500 . The intermetallic compound of O was formed after 10 hours mechanical alloying, however it could be considered that this intemetallic phase dose not prevent the transformation of rutile to the anatase phase after heat treatment at the temperature between 350 and .

The mechanochemical milling of Mg and alloys were carried out to examine the enhancement of hydrogen storage properties of Mg alloys. The hydroge characteristics of the ball-milled products were evaluated with a Sievert-type apparatus and electrochemical test. Various intermediate compounds were obtained by chemical reactions induced during the ball milling of Mg of alloys with C, Ni, and . The system of with 10 wt% C improved markedly the kinetics of hydrogen absorption, while the hydrogen capacities were practically unchanged. The hydrogen storage alloys such as Mg-Ca can be successfully.

The efects of mechanical aloying conditions and the type of reducing agent on the solid state reductionof haematite have been investigated at room temperature. Aluminium titanium zinc and copper were used as reducing agent. Nanocomposites of metal-oxide in which oxide particles with nano size were dispersed in Fe matrix were obtained by mechanical alloying of with aluminium and titanium respectively However the reduction of by coppe was not occurred Composite materials of iron with and were obtained from the system of and after ball milling for 20 hrs and 30 hrs respectively. And the system of resulted in the formationof FeO with ZnO after ball milling of 120 hrs. The final grain sizes of iron estimated by X-ray diffraction line-width measurement were in the ranges of 24~33 nm.
